“123 Cats: A Cat Counting Book” by Lesléa Newman

What’s up Kitty Kat?

Children will love looking at all the cute kitty cats in this adorable board book.  It will be a fun way to teach what numbers are, and what they stand for, while noticing there are more and more kitties on the pages.  Going over the book numerous times with your little one will help them learn about counting, as well as, have a good time seeing the silly things the cats do.

This well-made board book is a seven-inch square, and is full of colorful kitties and numbers.  The rhymes and the playfulness of the cats will bring laughter and smiles to young ones faces.  While they can use their fingers to point at the funny felines, and learn to count them, too.  I recommend this 5-star book for the fun things the kitties do, along with the number learning that could take place.  It will be enjoyed by children up to five years old.

“Pick a Holman KJV Bible Giveaway”

Winner Gets to Pick!

I am excited to say the winner of this giveaway can take their choice of one of the following three Holman KJV Bibles.

The first is the Holman KJV Study Bible. This remarkable Bible is as amazing to look through as it is to feel.  Its LeatherTouch cover feels really good to both the hands and fingers.

Each book has an introduction along with the background of the time period, included are insights that explain what makes the book unique, and a timeline of what point in history it took place. It is all done in an easy-to-read 9-point font, with the words of Christ in red. An abundance of award-winning notes add clarity to the scripture.

There are colorful maps and pictures sprinkled throughout the volume, making this Bible a true feast for the eyes and spirit. The back of the volume is packed with a concordance, a “King’s English” glossary of terms and 17th-century expressions, along with both a one-year and a three-year reading plan. This is a substantially sized Bible, but it has it all, including 5-stars.  I highly recommend it for any research, study or reading of God’s word.

The second is the Holman KJV Ultrathin Reference Bible that is perfect when you want to quickly look something up.  Usability is simple, each page has two columns with references in the middle and the words of Christ are in red.  The 8.5-point font is easy on the eyes.  Its thin size and light weight make it a cinch to carry, the cover feels very good in the hands, and it fits perfectly in a purse, backpack or briefcase.

Despite its compact size, this Bible packs a punch. The back of the volume has a guide to the glossary of terms used, along with a detailed concordance, and a harmony of the Gospels.

I recommend this as the first choice for any reference or questions you may have about the Scriptures that you want to find rapidly—or as an easy to grab and read 5-star Bible.

The third is the Holman KJV One Big Story Bible.  It has much more than past children’s Bibles because of all its extras.  One hundred forty-six full-color illustrations are brought to life through Digital Pop-Up technology—this makes the Bible scenes seem to pop off the pages—this will attract today’s children who are used to our visual world. The colorful illustrations will really draw children’s eyes.

Every book has an introduction written just with kids in mind.  Some of the many features include The Christ Connection that shows how each Bible story points to Christ.  The Big Questions/Big Answers feature tells curious kids what they want to know.  The Big Word features answers and definitions giving children understanding of Biblical words and terms.  Kids will be attracted to the “extras” this 5-star Bible has for them. I recommend it for third through eighth graders.

For over 400 years, the King James Version has been the trusted translation for millions of believers, and that translation will be found in these three Bibles.  There are tons more Bibles that Holman offers with great finishes and styles.  You can see the great selection of Bibles available now (and many on sale) at www.thekingjamesBible.com.

“The Nature of a Lady” by Roseanna M. White

The Unexpected–Friends, Mystery & Love!

Lady Elizabeth, Libby, has just arrived at the Isles of Scilly to escape the marriage her brother is trying to force her into.  Her love of nature and science go against the behavior of young women in 1909 British society—her brother and mother hope to change her so she will act like a proper English Lady.

No sooner have Libby and her maid arrived at their vacation cottage than her summer plans suddenly change.  Libby is mistaken for the former tenant of the cottage, whose name was also Elizabeth, and who has disappeared.  Unusual deliveries are made to the cottage—but none of it was ordered by Libby—and then she begins to receive threats.

When a worried Oliver, the brother of the missing Elizabeth, arrives at their doorstep, the two women beg to help him hunt for her–and to stop the mysterious happenings that have been directed toward Libby.

That opens the door to all kinds of danger, including attacks, legends of pirates along with their treasure, some tender romance and shocking twists along with the surprise of who has been behind it all.  Unexpected friendships, and finding a place where you belong are the cherry on the top of this tale.

This is a great story; get it for yourself and you will love it, too—this is a 5-plus star book.  It will be enjoyed by everyone who likes clean stories filled with adventure, mystery, faith, finding friends, and a soulmate!

“Bible Promises & Prayers for Your Children” by Bill & Beni Johnson

Taking Care of Your Treasure!

If you are a parent you have treasure that you need to take care of and protect.  As this book rightly points out, your child is your treasure. Take the advice in these devotions, and it will help you nurture them as well.

There are thirty-one subjects that include a short discussion that will get you thinking about each topic. They range from “nothing is impossible,” to “born with significance,” to “dreaming with God.”  Two or three Bible verses follow that underscore it.  Next, a brief guided prayer asks the Lord for help in the area.

A nice addition to the book, if you would like to do it, is bringing your child into the process.  There are questions that you can ask your child, along with a short prayer for them to say.  It concludes with a declaration they can make along with suggestions about things they can do.

Each devotion is very easy to read, and will only take a few minutes.  But in that short time, you will add countless blessings to your child’s life.

As the authors say:

“Our job is to plant seeds in our children’s lives and then cover their lives with prayer.  Prayer brings the water…And it is God who will bring forth fruit from the seeds we have planted.”

The size of this hardbacked, 5-star book, makes it easy to slip into a purse, backpack, or pocket.  Take it with you so it is ready when you have a few minutes.  I highly recommend it to anyone with a child in their life.

“At Lighthouse Point” by Suzanne Woods Fisher

Going Home Again!

Blaine has just returned from Paris to her Maine island home. After only two years away attending a French cooking school, everything at home has changed. Artie, her former best friend has become the island doctor, but he barely acknowledges her. Can she figure out what is wrong, and return to the way they were before?

Her exasperating older sister Cam, who can push all of Blaine’s hot buttons, continues to do and say things without thinking them through. Worse of all, her father let Cam, who doesn’t cook, remodel their home kitchen, and it will never pass the commercial license requirements. Can the coping skills Blaine learned in Paris work with Cam?

Blaine thought it was God’s will for her to return home, and cook for the family campground. Did she make a mistake? Then an elaborate plan comes to her mind that involves the ruined lighthouse, cooking school, and a destination restaurant. Is this from God, or is it just her imagination getting out hand?

This is a great story of family, friends, and finding purpose in life. Her accident-prone French friend, Jean-Paul, provides comic relief, as well as, great counseling for Blaine, and lots of others. This tale stands on its own despite being the third installment of a series. This 5-star book will be enjoyed by those who like stories with cooking, family drama, and unexpected love!

“The Paris Betrayal” By James R. Hannibal

Treachery and Confusion!

Ben is a spy that suddenly has everything go wrong. Afterwards, his life is constantly in danger, his support network dries up, and he is horrified to find he is labeled as a traitor. With very little materially, and the inability to convince any of his co-workers that he has been wrongly accused, he sets out on his own.

Relying mostly on his wits to survive, Ben tries to discover why this is happening to him, and who is behind it all. While in lots of dangerous situations with car chases, bullets flying, and assassins trying to kill him, Bens unearths a plot that will affect the entire world–but can he get anyone to believe him?

There was lots of action, thrills, and it is a clean story–which I really appreciate. This tale has all the things I like, but it did not work for me. The final part has surprising twists and turns. The book’s ending seemed like it could only go in one direction, however, the author was able to make it go differently. Although happy for that, the ending was still not satisfying for me.

Too much of the tale was explained in the last few pages. Giselle’s behavior never made sense to me, and neither did the Director’s at this 4-star story’s end. This is aimed for people who like fast-paced, thrilling tales.

“Masters of Disguise” by Marc Martin Author & Illustrator

Now You See Them…..!

Attention all curious minds who like to solve mysteries—come find where all the creatures are hiding!  This book shows the variety of animals around the world that blend into their environment so well, it is hard to see them. From an insect that can look like a flower, to butterflies that look like leaves, to snakes that look just like a vine, children will be amazed how well they can blend in.  Pictures and descriptions show the way coloring and shape allows them to be overlooked in their environment.  For even more fun, pictures are included to practice finding some that are in disguise.

Children will have lots of fun learning how members of the animal kingdom hide in plain sight.  They will really like, and have a good time, with the pictures where they try to pick out for themselves animals that are in camouflage.  This is a beautiful hard-backed book, with lots of colorful and endearing illustrations, done by the author himself. This is a book that will be loved, and looked at over and over.  Children through ten years old will like this, and will have a good time unmasking the animals around us.  I highly recommend this 5+ star book!

“Reptiles Everywhere” by Camilla de la Bedoyere

Illustrated by Britta Teckentrup

They’re Here, They’re There…..!

Open your children’s eyes to the many reptiles that live in the world around us.  The variety and locations they inhabit is surprising.  From turtles, to snakes to lizards, reptiles can be found in fresh water, the ocean and on land.  This book will tell you where to look, and the way many of the critters spend their time.  Learn what they like to eat, and what they need to hide from—or who hides from them.

For instance, the Asian forest tortoise will pile leaves over it eggs, and then stand on top of them to protect them from harm.  Beware if the salty sea snake swims backwards, that is what it does when it is ready to capture its dinner.  Be careful of swimming where the reticulated python is because it is the longest snake in the world, and it can grow up to 35 feet.

This hard-backed book features beautiful embossing on the cover that will delight little fingers, while the gold flecks on the turtles will make their eyes sparkle.  Told from an evolutionary perspective, it states how reptiles developed over time.  This five-star book will be enjoyed by children six to nine years old.
