“Mouse’s Night Before Christmas” by Tracey Corderoy

Illustrated by Sarah Massini

Fun with Santa!

The famous tale of “The Night Before Christmas,” is viewed through the eyes of a lonely mouse who has a Christmas wish.  He suddenly discovers Santa is lost, and mouse is the only one to help him.  Despite having a great time all night, Santa finishes his delivery and must leave mouse to go back home to the North Pole.  What of mouse’s wish?  Santa leaves him with a gift, but it is not the answer to what he wanted, or is it?

This cute story is found between the covers of an over-sized, hard-backed picture book.  Vibrant illustrations fill the pages with color and Christmas cheer.  Little ones will enjoy mouse’s time with Santa along with his quest to get what he really wants for Christmas.

Everyone will like the ending.  This five-star book is recommended for children two through 1st grade.

Teriyaki Skillet, Gluten-Free or Regular

1 Small Bottle of Gluten Free or Regular Coconut Aminos, Soy Sauce or Teriyaki Sauce

1 ½ lbs cooked ground turkey or Beef

Small Onion, chopped

Celery, 2 – 3 stalks chopped

Salt and Pepper to taste

2 Tablespoons minced Garlic

2 Cups Gluten-Free Chicken Broth

4 Tablespoon Corn Starch

1 can of Water Chestnuts, drained

1 -2 teaspoons Swerve or other Sweetener

Optional stir ins:

Shredded Zucchini

Shredded Carrots

Shredded Summer Squash

Mushrooms

In a large skillet, brown the ground turkey along with salt and pepper, over medium heat. Half-way through cooking time (at about 10 minutes), celery and onions.  Add optional stir-ins at this time, adding 5 – 10 extra minutes. Stir in well.

Two minutes before done, add garlic and mix well.

While still on the heat, add entire bottle of coconut aminos, 1 ½ cups chicken broth, and drained water chestnuts. Bring to a low boil.  While that is going on, sprinkle corn starch over remaining ½ chicken broth, mix well with fork until dissolved.

After low boil is reached in skillet, sprinkle swerve over top of food.  Then blend in corn starch and chicken broth mixture.  This will start thickening, so stir well so it mixes well and doesn’t stick or burn.  When completely mixed and thickened, serve with rice.

Enjoy this is, it is quick, easy & tasty!

“See the Cat” by David LaRochelle

Dog not Cat!

Poor Max the dog, he just wants to be noticed for himself.  Giggles, funny stories, good times, silly pictures—you will find all that and more between the covers of this book.  Be ready for one of the best times you have had with a story, a children’s book yet, as you read the adventures of Max, who is desperately trying to get the reader’s attention that he is not a cat.

Laugh with Max and all the hilarity that surrounds him while trying to change the captions about him in this book.  Three short stories, all rib-tickling, contain the adventures Max has with this tale that keeps labeling him either something he isn’t, or something he really does not want to happen.

When you are ready to have a good time, just for the sake of fun, you and your child should run, not walk, to get this.  This tale is a hoot, and you are both in for a high time while reading it.  Be prepared for lots of fun just for the price of a book.  I highly recommend this well-made, hard-backed, 5-plus star book to preschoolers through nine-year-olds, and all who enjoy laughing!

“Healing Family Relationships” by Rob Rienow

Words Hurt….

Fights and friction in a family can make life miserable.  This book points out some ways that healing and reconciliation might take place.  There are some good suggestions and steps to take.  The author recommends things such as praying about the situation, wiliness to admit being wrong (if you were) and offering apologies when appropriate.

But you also need to be prepared that the person(s) you have a disagreement with may never accept your apology, or give you one, if you were the one wronged.  Ultimately, the Biblical advice holds true, you must be willing to offer forgiveness even if you were the one that was hurt.  Despite that seeming like the last thing you want to do, you will suffer more if it is not done. Unforgiveness will eat into your life and soul making you miserable the longer you put off doing it.

This is a good resource for finding peace with others based on Biblical guidelines.  The hope is to get reconciliation with others, and this book will support you trying to do that. Not everything is easy, but, if the suggestions are followed, healed relationships could be the result

The author has spent years bringing peace and healing to the hearts of family members and relationships.  I recommend this 5-star book to anyone who needs help with a fractured relationship.

CSB Holy Land Illustrated Bible Giveaway! by CSB Bibles Holman

An Exciting New Bible!

Another Bible?  Yes, but not like any that is usually seen.  The Christian Standard Bible (CSB) is a translation that sticks to the meaning of the original language but is also clearly understood.  Additionally, when reading the scripture, the goal of this Bible is for the reader to understand the following three things:

What was the world like at the time of the Bible passage?

What is the meaning of the geographic location?

Would people, at the time of the scripture, understand a significance not easy to understand now?In order to do that, this volume has:

Hundreds of full-color images, maps and illustrations that apply to what is being read.

More than 275 full-length articles along with 40 “Digging Deeper” articles to increase understanding.

Each book has a complete introduction that tells the setting, the author and circumstances at the time of writing.Additionally, the 9.5 font is easy on the eyes, there are two built-in book marks, and despite being a substantial volume, it is not difficult to carry.  This hard-backed book is filled with good quality paper, unlike the typically thin Bible pages.  Full of colorful pictures, maps, and extra items–little known things about scripture–that all work together to make you feel like you have traveled to the Holy Land without leaving your armchair.

The result is an exciting way to study scripture in a 5+star Bible, that I highly recommend. I am happy to say tickmenot has one of these great Bibles in my blog giveaway.

Homemade Cashew Butter, Naturally Gluten-Free

Finding cashew butter free of allergens became difficult, so we started making our own.  We will never go back to store bought.  This is easy, quick and the only additives are the ones you put in.

3 cups of Cashews, with nothing added, we use the large jar from a box store

2 Tablespoons of Swerve, Sugar or nothing at all

2 Tablespoons of Olive Oil

We make this in our Vitamix Blender.  Put all the ingredients in the blender.  Start at lowest speed but quickly move up to highest speed.  While it is blending, use the tamper to press ingredients toward the blades.

At first, it will make a loud noise, but as it turns into cashew butter, the noise will change from high to very low.  You will also notice that all the nuts have been mixed, and you are done.

It will take around 2 minutes or less, and you will have about two cups of cashew butter.

It will be warm when it is first done, but will cool quickly.  Store in clean jar with a lid.

Cashew Butter Cookies, Gluten-Free or Regular

1 cup cashew butter, creamy*

1/3 cup brown sugar Swerve (or brown sugar)

6 tablespoons cashew milk, room temp

1 vanilla bean, scraped, or 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 cup Chuck’s gluten-free flour blend, use regular flour if not gluten-free

1 teaspoon baking soda

½ ground ginger

generous pinch of Sea salt (only use if nut butter is unsalted)

1/3 cup white, granulated Swerve ( or white granulated sugar)

INSTRUCTIONS:

Preheat the oven to 350°F. Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper.

Make the dough: In a large bowl, add the cashew butter, ginger and Swerve.  Mix until creamy. Stir in the cashew milk and vanilla bean scrapings. Next, add the flour, baking soda and salt, mix to combine. The dough will be tough to stir, using your hands to mix it together will be easier.

Roll and flatten: Using a 1.5 tablespoon scooper, scoop out the dough and roll into balls, or make balls that are about 1 1/4 inch.  Roll each ball in regular Swerve.  Place the balls of dough about 2 1/2 inches apart on a baking sheet.

Using the back of a fork, flatten in a crisscross pattern. When flattening, dip the fork in white Swerve between pressing each the cookie to keep them from sticking.  Use the bottom of a cup dipped in Swerve if you do not want to use a fork.

After rolling cookie balls, if there is leftover Swerve in bowl, sprinkle evenly over cookie tops after flattening.

Bake: Place in the oven and bake for 10 minutes. Let cool a few minutes, transfer cookies to wire rack and repeat with remaining dough.

Makes about 18 cookies.

Store: Store cookies in an airtight container in the freezer, less any cookies you will be eating immediately. Remove individual cookies from freezer as you want to eat them.

Recipe can easily be doubled.

*We make our own Cashew Butter, see recipe: Homemade Cashew Butter, Naturally Gluten-Free.

“The Right Kind of Fool” by Sarah Loudin Thomas

The Wrong Place at the Wrong Time!

Being in the wrong place at the wrong time causes 13-year-old, deaf, Loyal Raines to find a recently dead body.  In shock, he stumbles to the cabin of his estranged father.  Loyal’s life is turned upside down as he tries to figure out the identity of the killer, only to discover his life is in danger, too.

Additionally, his father is back in his life.  Will his parents reconcile?  Has his dad been gone because of Loyal and the fact he is deaf?  Should Loyal admit the rest what he saw?

This amazing story packs a punch with the twists and turns that are taken to find the murderer, you will be surprised who did it.  On top of that, the tale of his parent’s relationship will captivate you from the beginning, and keep you on the edge of your seat wondering what will happen.

Will Loyal ever feel he is normal and, not have to prove it to himself, his father, or the rest of the town? Can he untangle his parent’s complicated relationship?

I highly recommend this 5+ star book.  It is a clean tale, from a Christian viewpoint, that will keep you engrossed from the first page, until you reluctantly come to the end of the tale.  There is mystery, family skeletons, puppy love, bullying, and surprising friendships between the covers of this book.  Older teens and up will enjoy this tale.

“This is a Book of Shapes” by Kenneth Kraegel

Shapes, Smiles & Lots More!

This board book may seem to start out like many other shape books until page seven is reached.  That is when everything goes downhill, literally, an emu appears, with a wagon full of pancakes, going down a hill.

This tongue in cheek children’s book will keep adults laughing as little ones enjoy more shapes and animals doing outrageous things.  There is a porpoise reading knock-knock jokes and a rhinoceros doing even sillier things.  Sturdy pages fill this substantial book that is over seven inches wide and tall.Instead of a children’s book that makes the kids giggle, this one will make BOTH the adults and children laugh as they go through it.  But it does fulfill its mission as a shape book, with some extras—along with smiling faces, and an instant good time. I highly recommend this 5+ star book to babies through age three.  It is the best shape book I have ever seen!
