“Storming the Black Ice” by Don Brown

Book Cover Storming the Black IceThis is a war story, so there are violent, gory and bloody parts in this book.  There are also lots of technical sections, and jargon about war equipment, particularly submarines.  The author goes into great detail about those items.  This is a fast-moving adventure with lots of excitement.

There are some clear positives and negatives about this story.  On the negative side, there is drinking of alcohol, some adult situations are discussed, and a small amount of profanity.  Those aren’t the kind of things I like to read about in Christian fiction.  The descriptions of death and violence were very hard to read, as well.

On the plus side, however, there were some great Christian scenes involving becoming a believer in Christ, acting in faith and some miraculous events.   The descriptions of different locations, especially Chile, are beautiful.

The author writes well.  This is a work of fiction, but he presents a story that is very believable.  It wouldn’t be surprising to open a newspaper in the future, and see what he has written about has become fact.

There are a lot of story-lines going on in this book that ultimately connect together.  It was good to have some of these other narratives going on because they provided a contrast from the intense war story.   However, when reading some of these other accounts, I found myself wanting more details, wishing for those narratives to be longer.  Also, there were so many stories, that the first part of the book was, at times, difficult to follow.

This isn’t the kind of book I normally read.  Considering the subject matter, it is probably tame, but for me, it wasn’t something I really enjoy.   Despite that, Mr. Brown spins a well-crafted tale.  I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys action-packed war or submarine stories.  I can’t completely endorse a book that promotes alcohol as something that is needed in order to relax, or necessary for social functions, so give this tale four stars.
