“On Green Diamonds” by Tom Tatum

Book Cover On Green Diamonds

Take Me Out to the Ball Game

This is a work of fiction, but is so well-done, it seems like it is really the autobiography of an actual person, not a character in a book.  It is the story of a relationship that begins with baseball, a small boy and a retired major league player.   The three come together, and their relationship is life-changing.

Gabe “Fireball” Nelson, along with his wife, Heather, have moved to a small southern town to escape the constant limelight they were in while he played professional baseball.  When Tyler and his widowed mother move into their neighborhood, childless Heather and Gabe welcome them with open arms.

Tyler is a very introverted young boy, still hurting from the death of his father.  He loves baseball because his dad was a big fan; they often watched games together on television.  The Nelson’s hearts go out to them, and Gabe finds himself really wanting to connect with Tyler.  He finds that baseball is the key to that.  The little boy, along with the older man, start playing catch a few evenings a week.

This is a tale that spans many years, and includes the changes Tyler and Gabe experience, along with the way baseball influences the course of their lives.   On Green Diamonds covers the heart-ache of bullying as well as, the touching relationship Tyler and Gabe develop.

In this story, Gabe’s father had created what he called, “Twenty-One Rules to Live By,” which Gabe passes on to Tyler.  He advises the young boy to memorizes them, and try to apply them to situations he faces.  This moral compass of practical guidelines helps Tyler live a successful life.  This is such an excellent set of suggestions, that this list alone would make the book worth getting.

However, this is also a great story that is compelling, well-done and written from a Christian point-of-view.   You do not have to be a baseball fan to enjoy this 5-star book, but, if you are a fan of the game, you will certainly enjoy this.  I do suggest having a tissue box nearby for the last few chapters.  On Green Diamonds is an inspiring story that appeals  to all ages, and believe everyone would enjoy it.  I recommend you get a copy today.
