Army BaseThis book is geared towards elementary school students, and tells about a career in the U. S. Army.  The story-line centers on a school assignment a boy named Jake has.  Each student has to give an oral report about what he would like to be when he grows up, what career he would like to pursue.

Jake has no idea what he wants to do, so that evening talks with his Dad.  His Father reminds him he was in the army.  That causes Jake to consider joining the Army.

Army AirplanesDuring a trip to an Army surplus store, Army ParachutesJake’s Dad explains the variety of careers that are available in the Army.  From this discussion Jake learns what the different ranks are, what many of the insignia and medals stand for, along with the importance the military is to our country.

Wouldn’t a book filled with facts be boring?

Army HorseThis book had lots of information that would be perfect for school aged children to read, yet it was not overwhelming.  The great pictures on every page illustrate and add a lot to the narrative.  All the data was creatively added as part of a story-line that followed Jake working on a school assignment.  That made the volume more like a story instead of a book with a bunch of dry facts.

Although this story followed a boy, girls would enjoy this book, too.  In fact there was a side story about a classmate of Jake’s named Hannah.   She had a surprise career choice that was revealed in the end.

I found this 5-star book very interesting and learned things myself–including what GI stands for.  You can find the answer to that question, along with many other fascinating facts, in this volume.   This narrative would be a great resource for students working on an assignment about careers, as well as, a very informative work for anyone who wants to learn about the U. S. Army.Army Eagle
