Is There a Doctor in the House?

This is the story of a little girl, Sofia, who loves animals.  It is also a book geared towards children that contains information about becoming a veterinarian.  Older elementary-aged children and above, will like this book, although some younger ones might enjoy having it read to them, as well.

Please…can we keep her?

Sofia has wanted a pet for a very long time, but her mother has always said no. Her mom doesn’t think Sofia or her brother, Diego, are ready for the responsibilities that come with having a pet.  Then one fateful night, during a storm, a stray cat wanders up to the family’s door.  After much pleading, Sofia’s dream comes true when her mother allows her to adopt it.Vet Dr. Examines Cat Wigu Press

Sofia’s dad suggests having the cat, Samantha, examined by a veterinarian.  As she examines Samantha, Dr. Helen explains what a veterinarian does, along with the types of animals that are seen.  Even technical facts are slipped into the story.

Which path to choose?

Readers learn there are two career paths that can be followed to become a veterinarian. Veterinarians with Horse Free Use - Copy One choice would be to specialize in the treatment of larger animals such as those found on a farm.  The other option would be to concentrate on smaller animals that are usually kept as pets.

This book does a couple of things.  First, it presents Veterinarians With Dog Free Use - Copyfactual material about becoming a veterinarian, and that information is given in such a way that it fits into the story-line.

Additionally, it teaches pet ownership.  I like that this book emphasizes the responsibilities such as feeding, grooming, and attention that come with having a pet. The author makes a good point about making sure the pet picked is not only wanted, but also a good match for your lifestyle.

What will I be when I grow up?

I think this is an easy way for children to learn about a career as a veterinarian in a story format.  Understanding the care and responsibility of pet ownership is an extra bonus.  At the end of the story, there is a list of qualities that make good veterinarians.  Some of them are loving animals, liking people, and being a good listener.  Thinking about those attributes can help a child decide if veterinary medicine is a career they would like to pursue. Vet Girl, Boy & Cat in Car Wigu Press

These fifty-four pages contain a lot of good information along with an enjoyable story, and lots of colorful illustrations.  This 5-star book joins the ranks of other good books that Wigu Publishing offers for children to explore a variety of different careers.

I’d like to thank the author for providing me with a complimentary copy of this book for the purpose of review. All opinions expressed are my own, and I was not required, or influenced, to give anything but an honest appraisal.
