Caveat Emptor, or Let the Buyer Beware!
Miranda Wimplegate, along with her grandfather, Elmer, are on a mission to save their
family’s business. They must find a painting, a family heirloom, that was mistakenly sold at their auction house in Boston. The wealthy LeBlanc family that owns it, is threatening to sue them, and ruin the Wimplegate name throughout the proper Boston society of 1873. In an attempt to stop that from happening, Miranda and her grandfather find themselves at an auction barn the Wimplegates recently purchased, in the backwoods of Missouri called Pine Gap.
Through a comedy of errors, the Wimplegate family has purchased a livestock auction business, not an art and antique business like they own in Boston. Yet the clues to the whereabouts of the missing painting clearly pointed to Pine Gap. They no sooner arrive, when Grandfather Elmer’s mind starts slipping, and he becomes prey to every scheme unscrupulous local characters try to interest him in. Additionally, Miranda and Elmer need to learn to run the sale barn, much to the consternation of the long-time manager, Wyatt Ballentine–who is unhappy because he had always planned on purchasing it.
Travel can broaden your horizons, as well as, other things….
The longer Miranda is in Pine Gap, the more mysteries unfold, including that of Wyatt’s background, along with his feelings for her. Yet life back in Boston always beckons her to return, making anything that happens in Pine Gap seem unreal.
This tale has lots of twists and turns, which will keep your interest, and the pages turning. I liked this story a lot. It will take you on a wild ride through the small-town life of the Missouri Ozarks, to the snobbery of the upper crust of Boston society. In between, is a doctor who thinks character can be determined by bumps on one’s head, a girl who gains self-esteem along with confidence in herself, and the possible missing heir to a very wealthy family. There is humor, mystery, and some romance, all kept clean through the talented pen of a Christian story-teller. I highly recommend this 5-star book to anyone who enjoys clean fiction.
