“Penguin & Moose Brave the Night” by Hannah C. Hall

Beating Night Fears!

Has your child been invited to a sleep-over, but they are nervous or scared?  Before their imagination carries them away, get this book.

Penguin is having his first sleepover with his long-time friend Moose.  Penguin had no worries until bed-time, then lots of scary things popped into his mind.

From the fact that Moose doesn’t have a night-light (he uses a hall light instead) to attackers that might show up, Penguin can’t sleep.  Additionally, the helmet Penguin has on, along with the rocks and slingshot he put in his pillow, are very uncomfortable.

Moose rouses just enough to tell Penguin not to be afraid, think about happy things, and that God will always be with him–there is nothing to fear.  Also, he should take off the helmet and take the things out of the pillow!

Talking to your child about sleepover fears, along with the things that happened with Penguin could help.  This book is a great tool to be used as a springboard to discuss worries.  An assortment of other things may be needed to conquer the anxiety.  Be prepared, it may take a few practice runs before your child can make it through an entire night away from home.

No matter what, be patient.  Remind your child that God cares, and is always with them.  Additionally, you may need to seek outside help.  This five-star book addresses a problem a number of children face, but the story itself is a good one.  Children through eight years old, with or without night fears, will enjoy this tale.
