“Bedtime for Albie” by Sophie Ambrose

Time for Bed!

It’s one of those nights, and Albie does not want to go to bed.  While running away from his mother, he tries to get his friends to play, but they all want to go to bed, too.

After tiring of playing by himself, he wants to go home.  That is when he discovers he is lost, and all he really wants is to be back with his mother.  Through other’s kindness, he gets there.  He also realizes his mother is the one who takes care of him the best!

Although this book can be enjoyed anytime, it would make a nice way to end the day as a bedtime story.  Little ones are sure to identify with Albie because they have times they don’t want to go to bed either.

Colorful illustrations, done by the author, appear on every page.  This over-sized, hard-backed picture book, is rated 5 stars, and will be enjoyed by children through seven years old.

Candlewick Publishers has provided Tickmenot with a complimentary copy of, Bedtime for Albie, for the purpose of review. I have not been compensated in any other manner. What to Watch Tonight? “All Saints!”

The Surprising True Story of How Refugees from Burma Brought Life to a Dying Church

Never Give Up!

This movie, All Saints, is based on a true story.

A church is dying and a new pastor, has been sent to inventory the assets, and put the building up for sale.  The small handful of members are devastated this is happening, and their church will be closing.  Pastor Michael Spurlock is not happy that his first role as a minister will be to close a church.

Just as all of this is happening, a hundred Karen refugees show up at All Saints’ Episcopal Church.  They are starving, have no place to stay, and only one of their group speaks English.  But Episcopal missionaries in their homeland of Burma had ministered to them.  Because of that, they were familiar with the church, and sought them out for help.

Can a few senior citizens, a brand-new pastor, and a church on the brink of closing its doors possibly help these needy people?

While trying to help, they deal with hardships, disappointments, and obstacles–including disapproval from the denomination.  But the film also shows miracles that took place along the way, as well as, the message Pastor Spurlock believed God gave him to help the people.  Things do not work out the way you think they will, but it is a good ending none- the-less.

This is a heart-warming film that is clean with no adult situations.  It will be entertaining for both adults, and children aged at least ten and up. There is nothing that would be offensive for children in this.  But, I think, the story-line would appeal to adults and older youth.  I highly recommend this 5-popcorn (5-star) movie for a fun night, with a feel-good story.

“A Dance in Donegal” by Jennifer Deibel

The Grass is Not Always Greener…..

Moira, a 1920’s American and a new teacher, does not want to go to Ireland.  But it was her mother’s last wish, and now she constantly dreams her mother is begging her to go there.

Almost from the beginning, Moira has felt like an unwelcome outsider in Donegal.

When she reluctantly did something that she felt God called her to do, life became worse.  One of the few friends she had, turned on her.  The school children aren’t allowed to come to school.  When she is out, the townspeople avoid her, and whisper horrible things about her. As more bad things happen to Moira, she questions why God wanted her to go there.

Despite some joyful moments, Moira faces a lot of hard things in her life.  She is living out the scriptural words of 1 Peter 2:20,

“…But if you endure suffering even when you have done right, God will bless you for it.”

I felt there should be some information about what Moira lived on during the times she was not teaching, along with more closure in the relationship with Sean.

Can this tale possibly turn out well for Moira?  Find out by reading this 5-star book.  This will be enjoyed by those who like stories of people who follow God’s way despite hardships, or vivid descriptions of Ireland and its people.

Why God Created the Cat

In honor of my favorite pet–sorry, I do not know who wrote this!

Why God Created the Cat

Adam said, “Lord, when I was in the garden, you walked with me every day. Now I do not see you anymore. I am lonesome here and it is difficult for me to remember how much you love me.”

And God said, “No problem! I will create a companion for you that will be with you forever and who will be a reflection of my love for you, so that you will love me even when you cannot see me. Regardless of how selfish or childish or unlovable you may be, this new companion will accept you as you are and will love you as I do, in spite of yourself.”

And God created a new animal to be a companion for Adam.

And it was a good animal.

And God was pleased.

And the new animal was pleased to be with Adam and he wagged his tail.

And Adam said, “Lord, I have already named all the animals in the Kingdom and I cannot think of a name for this new animal.”

And God said, “No problem! Because I have created this new animal to be a reflection of my love for you, his name will be a reflection of my own name, and you will call him DOG.”

And Dog lived with Adam and was a companion to him and loved him.

And Adam was comforted.

And God was pleased.

And Dog was content and wagged his tail.

After a while, it came to pass that Adam’s guardian angel came to the Lord and said, “Lord, Adam has become filled with pride. He struts and preens like a peacock and he believes he is worthy of adoration. Dog has indeed taught him that he is loved, but perhaps too well.”

And the Lord said, “No problem! I will create for him a companion who will be with him forever and who will see him as he is. The companion will remind him of his limitations, so he will know that he is not always worthy of adoration.”

And God created CAT to be a companion to Adam.

And Cat would not obey Adam.

And when Adam gazed into Cat’s eyes, he was reminded that he was not the supreme being.

And Adam learned humility.

And God was pleased.

And Adam was greatly improved.

And Dog was happy.

And the cat didn’t care one way or the other.

“A Cowboy for Keeps” by Jody Hedlund

Will Hard Work Make Dreams Come True?

Greta would do anything to help her little sister, Astrid, get well, including signing up to be a mail-order bride, and move across the country to marry a stranger.  Instead of finding better lives, the two arrive in Fairplay, Colorado, robbed, hungry and exhausted, only to discover her fiancé has died.  Now penniless, what will become of them in this small, hopeless place?

Wyatt is coerced into marrying Greta in exchange for secretly getting an investment in his cattle.  Greta and Wyatt work hard for the ranch to succeed, and try to live like a family for Astrid’s sake.  But every time they make progress, they face almost impossible hardships including someone purposely destroying their cattle to cause them to fail.

If Greta learns the truth of why their marriage took place, will she ever believe Wyatt could have feelings for her?  Will Astrid’s worsening health make it impossible for them all to stay together?  Does the surprising truth revealed towards the end of the tale break them up despite how they all feel?

Be prepared to be unable to put this book down, every turn of the page will bring more excitement.  Exploration of faith in God adds to the reality of the story.  This yarn stands alone, however, there is a big cliff hanger leading into the next installment in the series.  Those who like tales of the Old West, cowboys and romance will enjoy this 5-star book.

“The Moonlight School” by Suzanne Woods Fisher

A Whole New World!

Leaving behind her 1911 city-life, Lucy has agreed to spend six months in the backwoods of Kentucky helping her cousin.

Lucy doesn’t know which is more shocking, how difficult it is to ride a horse, and discovering what a life of advantage she has led; or the severe poverty of the mountain population, along with the high amount of adult illiteracy that has led to the people being cheated.

Included in the story, is the mystery of what became of Charlotte, Lucy’s two-and-a-half-year-old sister, who disappeared without a trace.  With each passing year, the guilt Lucy has felt because of it, has caused her to retreat within herself more.

In this new situation, Lucy faces roadblocks at every turn.  The mountain people are naturally wary of strangers, but Angie takes it a step further, and is openly hostile to Lucy.

Will Lucy be taken in by Andrew’s charms, while being blinded to the unscrupulous things he does?  Will the prickly Angie provide an answer to Charlotte’s disappearance? Will the idea of adults going to school on moonlit nights catch on, or will outside forces put an end to the project?

This is a fictionalized tale based on real historic events.  I love this book, and you will, too– make sure you read this, it is amazing!  This tale will stay with you long after you have finished the last page.  The people’s trust and faith in God is a vital part of their daily life; it adds a richness and charm to this tale.  I highly recommend this 5+ star book to everyone!

“The Purple Puffy Coat” by Maribeth Boelts

True Friendship!

Beetle gave his friend, Stick Bug, a wonderful gift—at least to Beetle–a purple puffy coat.  But Stick Bug has been unhappy ever since, because he doesn’t want to admit he hates the coat.  Children will giggle at the situations Stick Bug gets himself into instead of telling Beetle the truth.  At last, Beetle notices how sad his friend is every time he wears the coat, and they find a way to make them both happy.

Not only is this a cute story, there is an underlying truth, too.  People can be friends and still like different things, and if you try to be something you are not for a friend, you will be unhappy.  This idea is never too early for children to understand, and will make their friendships more genuine.

This over-sized picture book, with illustrations on every page easily makes this point while all wrapped up in a fun story.   Children through age seven will enjoy this 5-star book.
