“Tangled Webs” by Irene Hannon

book-cover-tangled-websCan The End Really Justify The Means?

Take two people that have each retreated to remote cabins trying to overcome some traumatic events in their past, add in some possible underwater treasure, along with a secret meth lab–and you have a story that is getting more exciting by the minute.

Finn McGregor is a former Army Ranger whose path crosses that of New Yorker Dana Lewis’ when her screams in the night echo throughout the peaceful forest.  His attempt to rescue her is the beginning of a fragile friendship between them.  But both of them carry burdens from their past that might make it impossible to connect in a meaningful way.cabin-in-woods-free-use-copy

Just as Finn and Dana might be making some positive steps in overcoming their problems, some disturbing incidents start taking place.  First, Dana’s deck is vandalized and her canoe is ruined by holes drilled in the bottom.  Shortly afterward, a fire breaks out on her property that is obviously arson.  Finn is also sure that someone has been watching them when they were floating out on the lake.  Who is behind all of this?

Although Chief Burnett has been contacted about all of these things, his investigation never seems to get anywhere.  In fact, he seems to encourage Dana to pack up and leave.  But the Chief has problems of his own.  He is burdened with trying to pay for his wife’s expensive care at an Alzheimer’s home.  He has sold and mortgaged everything he has, and now has thirty days before she will be kicked out.  When he is contacted about the location of items from a robbery decades earlier, will he give in to the temptation to robber-cartoon-free-usekeep it to pay for his wife’s care?

Wayne Phelps is tired of small town life, and has hit on a way to make enough money to finance a new life somewhere else.  But his method of money making isn’t exactly legal, and if he can’t convince Chief Burnett to look the other way, everything will be over for him.  That makes Wayne feel cornered and very dangerous.   And dangerous people can make decisions that can hurt a lot of people.

Will Finn be able to figure out who is behind all the things happening to Dana before she gets hurt?  Will Finn be put in danger himself right after he has begun healing both physically and mentally?  Or will the best thing be for both Finn and Dana to move on as the Chief suggests?

This was an exciting story that had a lot of twists and turns.  I also liked that it was located in a small Missouri town, with lots of interesting characters.  The moral battle the Chief faces was very realistic, and it was easy to identify with his feelings.  It was also easy to understand what it would be like for Dana after all the things that had happened to her.  I really appreciated that many of the characters had a real faith in God, and tried to live their life in a way that honored Him.  Finn’s relationships with his brothers, and the importance of his family was really uplifting.  I recommend this 5-star book to anyone who enjoys fast-paced, suspenseful tales.

“The Devoted” by Suzanne Woods Fisher

book-cover-the-devotedIs The Grass Any Greener On The Other Side?

Do you ever daydream about being part of the Amish people, enjoying their close community and strong family ties? That is how Patrick Kelly feels, and he has come to Stoney Ridge to live among them for thirty days.  While there, he wants to learn their language and how to drive a buggy, and be ready to convert at the end of his stay.

Ruthie Stoltzfus thinks Patrick is just one more outsider that wants to try-out the Amish lifestyle, who–like all the others–will quickly run away when he experiences how hard life is without modern conveniences.  She believes being Amish is a life of drudgery and hard work, and can’tamish-horses-pulling-plow-free-use understand why anyone would willingly want to join them.  Seventeen-year- old Ruthie wants to do something significant with her life, and does not think that could happen as a Plain person.

During Patrick’s time in Stoney Ridge, he finds things aren’t quite as perfect as he thought Amish living would be.  At the same time, Ruthie finds that Amish life looks a lot different when viewing it through Patrick’s eyes.  Will the slightly built Patrick find Amish life is too hard for him, and leave before the thirty days are up?  Will Ruthie allow her trouble making suitor to drag her down with his poor choices?  Will Ruthie and Patrick ever become friends, maybe even more than friends?

mynah-bird-mouth-open-free-use-copyThis story will draw you in right away.  The scripture quoting bird, Nyna the Mynah, is hilarious, so are the apprentices at the buggy shop, and Jesse’s tongue-tied fate every time a certain girl is around.   Serious subjects such as an unexplained death, alcohol abuse, and the heartache of a young man suffering from a fatal disease are also included in this tale.  There is even the interesting problem of too much prosperity causing the Amish to be less generous than when they lived in want.  The kindly local Bishop, who is Ruthie’s Dad, shepherds them through it all with lots of prayer, as well as, turning to the Bible for inspiration.

I have read many Amish books, and really enjoy the genre, but The Devoted is by far one of my favorites.  You will have a smile on your face when you finish this heart-warming tale.  Although this is book three in The Bishop’s Family series, this installment stands on its own.  But I bet you will want to read the others, because this one is really that good!  This is a five-plus star book that I highly recommend.  Whether you enjoy Amish themed stories, or just well-written fiction, you will be very happy with this book.

“Moments with the Savior” By Ken Gire

book-cover-moments-with-the-saviorHow Do You Say Relax?

Although this amazing book is considered a devotional, it is so much more.  It is heavy, both literally and figuratively, because there is a lot packed into its pages.  The beautiful padded cover has strong pages made of premium paper that are easy to turn, the entire book is very well made.  There are sixty-six topics that range from Mary being told by the Angel Gabriel that she would give birth to the Savior, to the subjects of forgiveness, guilt and Jesus’ Ascension.

Each chapter contains three areas.  The first section has the scripture that will be studied.  It is followed by the meditation section which discusses the Bible passage in an interesting, and easy to read way.  The final section is a prayer that applies the scripture and discussion to the reader in today’s world.god-sky-writing-free-use-copy

All of the chapters makes good points about the chosen scripture, and is done in a way that will capture your attention.  Many of the points made about familiar incidents in the Bible were ones I had never considered before.  That made this book very interesting for me, and I think anyone reading it would have the same experience.

Each topic will make you think, and the words will give you peace.  Because this is such a pretty book to look at, with such insight between its pages, it would make a lovely gift.  I highly recommend this five-plus star book to bicycle-with-praise-the-lord-written-on-fender-free-useanyone wanting a closer look at the Bible, or to get new insights into the heart of God.  You will be blessed by it.

“The Wedding Shop” by Rachel Hauck

book-cover-the-wedding-shopNothing New Under the Sun?

Two women’s stories of love and loss are separated by decades, yet an abandoned building in Heart’s Bend unites them both.   Cora Scott is a business owner, an unusual position to have in a small southern town in the 1930’s.  Haley Morgan, living in today’s time period, has been an over-achiever all her life.  That has given her the drive to finish college, join the military, and become an officer before retiring to her hometown.

Smart in business and passionately in love with a sea captain, Cora doesn’t understand why his promises of marriage never materialize.  As the years pass, a local farmer, Birch Good, continues to try to win her heart despite her discouragement.  When The Great Depression hits, Cora loses more than money.  She is betrayed by both love and family as well.sad-face-crying-free-use

Haley has reached all the life-goals she has gone after, except one–romance.  She has had love, but it came at a cost she never thought she would have to pay.  What she did for that love changed her into someone she couldn’t stand.  The death of her best friend, Tammy, was the catalyst that brought her home.  Now she hopes to redeem herself by keeping the childhood promise she made to Tammy.

Haley plans to re-open the wedding shop that once made Heart’s Bend famous throughout the South.  That is when her trouble really begins.  From locking horns with a corporation that wants the property for a parking lot, to an unethical city employee who holds her permits “hostage,” to dealing with her mother’s animosity towards the project, Haley has her work cut out for her.  Additionally, the building is falling apart around her.

wedding-dress-on-mannequin-2-free-useWill Haley be able to be successful despite all of the people fighting against her?  Will Cora ever give Birch a chance, or will he tire of waiting, and find someone else?  Will either woman be able to put past hurts aside, and move on to a better life?

Both women’s stories in this book will pull you in, and tug at your heart.  I especially liked Cora’s tale because it was set in a by-gone period, and the author really brought that era to life.  It had lots of twists and turns and didn’t end the way I thought–and I liked that!   Both Cora and Haley face some of the same disappointments in life, and it was interesting to see how they handled that in their separate time periods.  I always appreciate when a story, like this one, is written from a Christian perspective.  The Wedding Shop is the second installment in The Heart’s Bend Series, but this story stands on its own.  This 5 plus star book is highly recommended to anyone who enjoys romances, historical stories or well-written fiction.

“When Love Arrives” by Johnnie Alexander

book-cover-when-love-arrivesI’ve Got a Secret–or Two!

Brett Somers is handsome, rich and self-assured, and despite never meeting him, Dani is sure he is also cocky and selfish.  She plans to put him in his place, publically.   Following him, and secretly taking pictures of him might be considered stalking, but Dani believes she is justified in doing it.   However, when she begins to put her plan into action, everything starts falling apart.

Somehow, in the midst of her revenge campaign, Brett camera-free-usestarts talking with her.  Meeting him, let alone having a conversation with him, was never part of her plan.  Before she knows it, Dani is swept away by him, and finds they have many things in common.  To make it worse, Dani discovers Brett and her are forming a relationship.  At the very least, they have become friends, but possibly even more than friendship is growing between them.

Dani finds herself in quit a predicament.  Although she had been determined to dislike Brett, she finds herself caring for him, a lot.  Also, because of him, she has a good job and a safe place to live.  If the truth comes out about her original plans to discredit him, or if her mother’s name is discovered, Dani is sure all the good things in her life will tumble down like a house of cards.  Can Dani keep her secrets from Brett?  If Brett discovers the truth, can he forgive her?  Will Brett show her mercy since, in the past, he kept lots of secrets house-of-cards-free-usehimself?

This story-line captured my attention from the beginning.  When Love Arrives is the second installment of the Misty Willow series.  With some reservations, this book can be enjoyed without reading the first one.  That is because there are a few story-lines from book one that are never quite explained in this one, leaving the reader frustrated.  I did not care for how many things brought out “the green eyed monster” in Dani.  It made me wonder how she could possibly be a likable person with so many jealousy issues.  Also note the plot includes an out-of-wedlock child, and a past promiscuous lifestyle.  Details about it are not given, and the behavior is treated as something that brought pain and difficult consequences.   This 4-star book is recommended to those who like modern-day romances written from a Christian point-of-view.

“This Road We Traveled” by Jane Kirkpatrick

book-cover-the-road-we-traveledWould You Do This, Could You?

Imagine riding a bumpy oxen cart on unbroken ground over 2,000 miles.  That is what Tabitha Brown did in 1846.  What makes it even more remarkable was that she did this as a widow in her sixties with a deformed foot–that was painful and caused her to use a cane to walk.

Tabby lived a comfortable life in St. Charles, Missouri, with two of her children and their families close by.  She was a spunky lady, who was always ready for new adventures, and had an upbeat outlook on life.  No matter what difficulties came her way, she firmly believed God would take care of her.

When her son, Orus, announced that he and his family, along with his siblings and their no-on-hand-held-up-free-usefamilies, were all going to Oregon in a wagon train, Tabby was ready to go.  It was a quite a blow for her when Orus didn’t want her to.  He said she was too old, and handicapped to make the journey.  In order to get her to stay, Orus had even tried to arrange a marriage between Tabby and her brother-in-law, John.

The fireworks really went off when Tabby wouldn’t marry John, but instead got him to agree to go on the wagon train with her.  Tabby promised Orus that she would not be a burden to anyone, and she kept her promise.  It was quite an agreement to make, too, because no one knew what terrible hardships awaited them.  They made the trip the same year as the infamous Donner Party that had to resort to cannibalism to survive.

On her trip, Tabby witnessed the death of many of the people in her group.  They faced many calamities including starvation, lack of water, along with possible attack from various animals and people groups.  Their wagons broke with nothing to repair them with, and animals they counted on for transportation died.  One night, Tabby’s granddaughter Virgilia, was rescued from a five foot long rattle snake that curled up by her as she slept.  snake-orange-free-useAnother time, a teenager became separated from her family, and an intriguing account unfolds of the efforts made to reunite them.

As if making a trek across the country in a wagon train wasn’t enough for a woman of Tabby’s age, she had even more projects she started once she made it to the Pacific Northwest.  Despite arriving penniless, Tabby believed God would provide funds, ideas and people for her work.  The things Tabby put her hand to are still providing for people today.

This is a fascinating account.  It is made even more so because it is based on the real life covered-wagon-free-usage-copystory of Tabitha Brown who did indeed go west as part of a wagon train in 1846.  The author spent lots of time researching Tabby.  But do not think this is a dry, historical book, far from it!  There are lots of interesting stories here.

For instance, Tabby’s daughter Pherne did not want to leave her luxurious home and memories to go on the wagon train her husband was ready to join.  The problems their marriage faced because of it are not much different than those today’s relationships deal with.  Virgilia’s longing for romance along with adventure, and how she thinks she will get it,  add even more to this tale.   Plus the hardships of facing life with a handicap are explored through the eyes of an orphan named Judson.  This is a book that will encourage you to never give up no matter what obstacle you are facing.  I highly recommend this 5-star book.

“Kit Kat & Lucy” by Lonnie Hull DuPont

book-cover-kit-kat-lucyLife Changing Love

Lonnie DuPont’s life was changed by a new relationship that brought her love, companionship, and lowered her anxiety.  If you make the assumption that this is the tale of the author and her husband, Joe, you would be wrong.  Instead, these life changes occurred after Lonnie and Joe adopted a stray cat, named Kit Kat.  Or rather, Kit Kat adopted them.

This book is an endearing collection of true stories the author experienced after a cat came to be a part of her and Joe’s life.  The couple had recently left the bustle of San Francisco to live in an isolated farm house in Michigan.  Lonnie had been used to rubbing shoulders with large numbers of people daily.  Suddenly, she found herself spending lots of time alone each day.  Joe’s daily one and a half hour commute left lots of uninterrupted hours of silence for the author.

Then Kit Kat entered their lives, and everything changed.  Kit Kat made an incredible journey of several miles in order to stay with them.  cat-drawing-black-white-free-useThis small furry animal had a definite personality, and both the DuPonts enjoyed learning Kit Kat’s likes and dislikes–and she definitely had them.  Lonnie reveled in the love that one little cat could give, and she shares stories of the different ways that took place.  She also describes the deep affection Kit Kat and Joe develop for each other.

cat-cartoon-free-use-copyLater, a second cat, Lucy, also chose them for her family.  They had a lot of concerns about bringing another cat into their home.  Lonnie shares all the things they did to make sure Kit Kat would adjust to becoming a two-cat household.  The team that Kit Kat and Lucy make, along with their influence on their owner’s lives, is described in a charming way.  She even tells how the two cats “taught” Joe and her to play games with them.

This is a sweet book about the DuPont’s life after becoming cat owners.  The author shares some dear stories that will touch your heart, and make you want to get a cat if you don’t already have one.  Adopting first one, then two cats really did change Lonnie’s life, and her tales about how that happened will delight you.  She also reminisces about other animals that passed through her life in her childhood, as well as, during her growing up years.  All in all, this is a great book for any animal lover, and if you aren’t, you may find your attitude changed after reading this book.  Lonnie really pours out her heart in this memoir.  She makes a very good case that not all family members walk on two feet–some have four paws and fur!  I highly recommend this 5-star book.cat-dancing-playing-banjo-cartoon-free-use

“The Raven” by Mike Nappa

book-cover-the-ravebQuoth the Raven….

The Raven makes a deadly decision the day he decides to blackmail a local politician with information he has learned from picking pockets.  His actions set into motion his involvement with some of the most dangerous people in Atlanta. The Raven is a hustler, a young man in his early twenties, who supports himself by picking the pockets of his audience while he performs street magic.

The target of his blackmail has many ties to gangs, the underworld and the Ukrainian Mafia.  Instead of getting money, Raven gets three men determined to do him lots of harm.  Trudi Coffey breaks up his first meeting with the thugs, and it is love at first sight for Raven when she rescues him.

Private investigator Trudi is more interested in her case than Raven.  She and her former magician-free-usehusband, Samuel Hill, now a policeman, are trying to solve a complicated investigation. They have uncovered a secret plot called Nevermore.  Their work is really cut out for them with the many references to Edgar Allen Poe that keep popping up.  An arrested gang member offered a small amount of information when trying to make a deal.  But he didn’t offer anything concrete.

Things are fast spinning out of control for The Raven when he comes under the protection of an elderly woman, known as Mama Bliss, who has lots of secrets of her own.  Despite her advanced age, she has lots of power with people who count.  Just when life looks like it has calmed down for Raven, things really start to explode, possibly literally.

raven-silhouette-free-useBecause of his name, is The Raven part of the Nevermore plot?  Will The Raven do the right thing, or get away when he has the chance?  Can Trudi and Sam ever put the past behind them, or will Trudi give the smitten Raven a chance?

This fast moving thriller has lots of memorable characters, that are believable.  Mama Bliss and The Raven have complicated stories, and the author gives great insight into what makes them tick.  This is the second installment in the Coffey & Hill Series, and the story stands on it’s own.  The author does a good job catching the reader up on former story lines.

Once this volume is picked up, it is hard to put down.  The story draws you in, and you are off on a wild ride to find out the secret of Nevermore.  The punishment the thugs dish out to The Raven, is harsh, however, it is not an unexpected result from involvement with such dangerous people.  The surprise character that attempts to help Trudi in the hotel is both fun, and faith supporting!  This highly talented author will leave you saying, “Wow!”  I recommend this five plus star book to anyone who likes exciting, well-written thrillers.

“The Occupied” by Craig Parshall

book-cover-the-occupiedThey Don’t Only Come Out After Dark….

This is a Christian supernatural thriller!  All three of those subjects come together in a very fast-moving and believable story.  If the reality of God and the devil aren’t acknowledged, they don’t have any influence on one’s life, right? Once upon a time, that is what Trevor Black thought, as well.

Seemingly, he had it all:   he was a successful New York City lawyer, had a beautiful wife, and lots of money.  Trevor had never given much thought to good or evil, God or the devil.  But then everything came crashing down around money-lots-falling-from-sky-free-use-copyhim, and in the midst of his loss, he discovered Jesus.  But he also uncovers the reality of evil, and that he has been given an unusual gift.  He can sense the presence of evil, or horribles as he calls them–he can even smell them.

So begins a very realistic tale of intense spiritual warfare.  As a warning, there are some mature themes in this book.  However, everything flows together to point the reader to faith in God.  Trevor finds he must be ever watchful, because as Peter said, “the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour.”  But he also discovers as the disciples of long ago said to Jesus–“Lord, even the demons submit to us in your name.”

lion-licking-chops-free-useThis book is a real page turner, but it will also keep the hair on the back of your neck standing–even more so, because the story is so believable.  The author does a great job of tying incidents from decades earlier in Trevor’s life to things happening in the present.  The characters are interesting and realistic, and the author will keep you on the edge of your seat!  Your heart will be racing by the time you get to the last page.  This also appears to be a start of a series; I certainly hope so!  I highly recommend this 5 plus star book to anyone interested in thrillers with a supernatural twist.

“The Domino Effect” by Davis Bunn

book-cover-the-domino-effectA Great Fall…..

What if you know a financial crisis, one that could affect the entire nation, is right on the brink of happening?   Esther Larsen a top-notch, brilliant risk analyst at a large bank, is sure that all the signs in the financial and banking world are pointing that way.   But Esther is an introvert with only one relative, her brother Nathan.  But he has been languishing in a vegetative state at a rehab center since he was in a car accident.  She doesn’t make waves, and without her brother to bounce ideas off of, she doesn’t know what to do with her fears.

Despite Esther being a loner, she has attended some get-money-bag-huge-free-usetogethers with people from her church.  This bunch of people are determined to find out about quiet Esther, and it is because of them that her life changes.  When they start probing about her life, she not only opens up to them, but confides her biggest fear.  She explains she is concerned that a conspiracy is forming with the goal of making billions of dollars, but by doing so, it could cause an economic market crash worse than the one that took place in 2008.

After admitting her fears, her life takes some abrupt turns.  Esther suddenly finds she is in big demand as a speaker before large crowds, as well as, on television.  She discovers herself rubbing shoulders, and being befriended by, a rich and powerful man who catches her vision.  She also finds a man who just might be someone to build a future with–if he can handle the truth when he begs her not to hold back.  Esther also learns her life may be sign-bank-at-own-risk-free-usein danger!  She really identifies with her namesake from the Bible, Queen Esther, who also had to speak out, even if it meant risking her safety.

This is a fast moving thriller with interesting characters.  When reading this, the reader will feel like this is not so much a book of fiction, but a warning about something that could take place in real life.  But I have to admit that the first part of the book was really difficult for me to get into.  Despite the author being a great writer, there were so many technical banking and trading terms, that I found it hard to digest so much information.  After that, the story focused more on the people, and I really got caught up in all the action.   The author is a great story-teller, and I recommend this 5-star book to anyone who enjoys real-life possibilities presented in a fictional wrapper.
