Lauren is offered a low paying job miles from Los Angeles that includes free rent.  Since the pay is so low, Lauren needs for the housing to be included to be able to survive.  But the rent free, broken down cottage is in a very unusual neighborhood.   The area has very strict privacy rules.  If the rules aren’t followed to the letter, Lauren could be kicked out.  Wanting to hide from the world, an over-the-top, very private place sounds perfect to Lauren.  Plus, Cottage Free Uselandscaping the neglected yard is therapeutic for her.

In this neighborhood, the most private person of them all, wealthy Charlotte Montgomery, lives right across the street from Lauren.  Elderly now, Charlotte, was involved in a scandal decades earlier, and rarely leaves her home.  She insists all the privacy rules are followed precisely.  Lauren feels God might have placed her there to befriend Charlotte, but all overtures she makes are met with cold hostility.  Charlotte cannot believe that anyone would do anything nice for her without expecting something in return.  But a small part of Lauren isn’t ready to give up on her.

An aggressive reporter, Kendall Joiner, contacts Lauren, and tells her the gown catastropheInterview Microphone & Arm Free Use was staged, and she could get proof that would clear Lauren.  However, Kendall will only do that if Lauren will give her information about Charlotte.  Is Lauren ready to sell out Charlotte, and risk losing her rent-free home by breaking the privacy laws?  Does Kendall really have proof that would clear Lauren, or is this just a ruse to get information about the reclusive Charlotte?

This was an entertaining book, and I really enjoyed the story-line about fashion designing, especially the clothes from a by-gone era.  Refreshingly, Lauren has a strong moral compass, and integrity.  The dilemmas she finds herself in are realistic, and I think it would be easy for readers to relate to Lauren.  The mystery surrounding Charlotte added a nice addition to the tale.  I recommend this 5-star book to anyone who enjoys contemporary fiction.

Faith Like a Mustard Seed

Religion, race and gender work against good friends Faith and Honoree, as they attempt toNurse's Uniform Vintage Free Use tend to the Union’s wounded during the Civil War.  Many things cause an uphill battle for them.  Faith is a Quaker, and that denomination’s stance against slavery have many people blaming the Quakers for starting the war.  Honoree is African American, and despite being free-born, is often treated less than equal, even by the Union troops.  Although both women are trained nurses, that profession did not have any respect in those days.  Many doctors viewed them as little more than women with loose morals, and not helpful, but a hindrance, to have with the patients.

Both women keep persevering in their jobs because they have one goal in mind:  find Shiloh.  Years earlier, Faith’s childhood friend, and Honoree’s sister, Shiloh–despite being a free-born woman–had been kidnapped, and taken south to be sold as a slave.  They have Civil War Cannon Firing Free Usebeen following what few leads they have about where Shiloh might be.  But at this point, Faith and Honoree must stay with the Union troops until they can find a way to safely investigate the areas that are still under Southern occupation.

As the Union pushes closer to Shiloh’s possible location, Faith becomes friends with Colonial Knight.  Although he is a Union soldier, the Colonial has had a slave for many years, although he claims he will be giving him his freedom very soon.  Despite Faith’s growing attachment for him, Faith does not see how it could work for them since they have such opposite viewpoints about slavery.

Other obstacles have occurred that make their search for Shiloh difficult.  As winter approaches, even the Union camp is struggling with many hardships, and shortages.  Faith and Honoree are pressured by their family and loved ones to return home where they will have plenty of food, and not have to live out in the elements.  Both women have also faced dangerous situations since their search has taken place during war-time conditions.  Faith and Honoree have to make a decision that they can live with.   Civil War Tents Free Use

This was an amazing book.  To be honest, I did not think I would enjoy it at all, but was surprised by how quickly the story drew me in.  The author did such wonderful research, that this seemed like this story was about real people instead of a fictional account.  The personal struggles the main characters have, along with their faith in God, all ring true.  Although this is book three in the Quaker Brides Series, this story stands alone.   I highly recommend this 5-star book to anyone who likes Civil War or historical fiction, as well as, anyone who enjoys a well-written story.

What Would You Do?

Everything changed from the time Deputy Sheriff Keane stopped a man from committing Bridge Foggy Free Use - Copysuicide.  After Keane tackled Jackie Johnson to keep him from jumping off the bridge, Johnson told him, “You’ll wish you pushed me.” Almost from that moment on, everything started going wrong for the Deputy.

This is a terrifying story of people that Keane knows being targeted, and brutally killed by a serial killer.  Horrifying pictures of the victims begin arriving at the newspaper in the small-town of Hidden Springs that Keane lives in.  Other pictures are sent to Keane’s office.  Some of the evidence seems to point to Johnson being the killer, but certain things aren’t adding up if he is the one doing it.  For instance, Johnson seemed like a very simple man.  But these killings are the work of a highly intelligent, albeit sick, mind.

The only thing Keane knows is the killer always seems to be at least one step ahead of him, Jail Sketch Free Useand doesn’t waste much time between killing one person, and moving on to his next victim.  While trying to protect those Keane loves, along with trying to stop the mysterious madman, the deputy suddenly finds himself snared in a trap the killer has set for him.  The Deputy is being framed for these murders.

Who is next?  Deputy Keane has been running himself ragged trying to protect those he cares about.  Will anyone believe that Keane is really the killer, and keep him in jail?  What will become of Keane’s Aunt Lindy, along with his good friend Alex?  Both of these women seem to be the killer’s next targets.  Will jailing Keane take away their protection, and make one or both of them the killer’s next victims? Wanted Poster Jackie Johnson Free Use

This story is told from a Christian point of view, but parts of it are very chilling, and intense.  I have a very active imagination, so this is right on the very edge of what I could read without it keeping me awake at night.  This is the second book in the Hidden Springs Mystery Series, but this installment stands on its own, and it isn’t necessary to read the first one to appreciate this one.  This 5-star book is recommended for anyone who enjoys intense mysteries, as long as, the reader is not bothered by serial killers being part of the story.

The Country Life

One day, you are living in a tiny apartment in New York City, the next, you find yourself onNew York 2015 New York Skyline - Copy a sprawling ranch miles from the nearest neighbor.  That is what happened to this author, seventeen-year-old Jules Turner, when she was in grade school.  One day her mom announced they would be moving to the Lone Star State, and shortly afterwards, they did.

Jules does a good job of contrasting what life was like while she attended a private girl’s school, in New York City, a few steps away from The Metropolitan Museum of Art, to a life of getting up at the crack of dawn to feed horses, and attend to other animals on their Texas ranch.  She includes some of the predicaments those animals get themselves, or Jules and her mother, into.  The move even forced her to dress differently, especially her footwear.  On their ranch, she has to wear special “snake boots” because of the ever-present danger of Snake Cartoon Free Usepoisonous snakes.

After their move west, Jules’ Texas grandparents become a bigger part of her life.  They bring humor, along with love and caring, in their interactions with Jules and her mom.  It was heart-warming to read about their get-togethers, even if bumpy at times.

Although their neighbors are fewer and farther apart than when they lived in New York Texas State Shape Free UseCity, the author is astonished when their Texas neighbors rally around them with food and comfort during a tragic event.  Jules remarks that the tenants of their New York apartment, who were mere steps away, would not have done that.  Trying to cope with the grief and loss she feels afterward, Jules shows wisdom beyond her age when she states, “…I found that life was made up of moments, and if I could just make it through that one moment, I could face the next.”  Good advice for us all, no matter our age.

There are some overriding questions that beginning forming in your mind while reading this book.  The biggest of which is:  where is her dad? Is he part of her life, or non-existent?  There was a perfect point in the book when it could have been addressed, but it wasn’t.  Despite that, this 5-star book is interesting, and it is amazing that it was written by someone so young.  No doubt this is geared toward readers from middle school up, but adults will enjoy it too.  A word of warning, the story at the end of the book could be something some parents might object to.

“Under the Sea Holy Bible NlrV Version” from Zonderkidz

Book Cover Under the Sea Bible

“….He Gently Leads Those Who Have Little Ones”–Isaiah 40:11

Ready to dive into the Bible with a catchy Under the Sea Theme?  Zonderkidz has come up Under the Sea Bible ABCs of Becoming a Christianwith one, a beautiful hardback Bible geared for children aged six to ten.  The cover itself is really eye catching with lots of brightly colored, glittery ocean life and fish.  The translation is one made for kids, too.  It is the New International Reader’s Version or NlrV, the NIV for kids.

When this Bible is first opened, there is a beautiful presentation page made of heavy weight paper.  It is colorful, and contains more ocean-theme characters.  The back of the page contains all the books of the Bible, along with ocean-life decorations.

What this Bible has to offer for children is very appealing.  There are three special sections geared toward children, and they are one page each.  Each of those pages, front and back, are incredibly cute with lots of eye appeal, and contain things geared just for kids.  Those pages, which are full color and made of heavy weight paper, contain:

Under the Sea Bible Prayer Is– Prayer Is…
– The Lord’s Prayer
– Ten Commandments For Kids (Based on Exodus 20:1-17 and Deuteronomy 5:7-21)
– Love Passage For Kids (Based on 1 Corinthians 13)
– Famous Children Of The Bible
– The ABCs Of Becoming A Christian

At the back of the volume, there is a list of Great Bible Stories along with a Bible Dictionary, but those are not printed on the special heavy-weight paper. There are no other pictures, maps or other supplemental material included in this Bible.  Also, other than the presentation page along with the three special page inserts, the type of paper used for this Bible is the regular, very thin, onion-skin type of paper used in traditional Bibles.  My concern is that six to ten year-old-fingers might have trouble turning those pages without tearing them.

Zonderkidz has done lots of things right in this Bible.  They have kept it affordable with a Under the Sea Bible Love Passage for Kidssuggested price of $24.99.  Having a special version of the text geared towards children is also a wonderful idea.  The cover is amazing, and the three supplemental pages are eye catching, and wonderfully creative, but that is where things stop.  Since this is geared towards children, I would have liked to have seen at least six to nine or more “special” colorful pages in this Bible, along with a least one colorful map–more would be even better.  There is a lot that is good in this 4 star Bible, but I think a little bit more would have made this a great Bible for children.

“The Bachelor Girl’s Guide to Murder” by Rachel McMillan

Scandalous Detecting Edwardian Style

The Toronto Society of 1910 is scandalized by the antics of two single young women–Edwardian Lady Oval Free Usebachelor girls–Jem and Merinda.  Everything they are doing causes no end of gossip about them.  They investigate crimes and murders, they disguise themselves in men’s trousers while investigating, and they are doing these things instead of trying to get married.

Jem’s parents are so upset they have cut off her allowance, hoping she will change her ways, and behave like a “proper young woman”.  Instead, she has gotten a department store job to make ends meet, since they rarely get paid for their detective work.

Jem and Merinda throw caution to the wind when they start investigating a murder.  To Police Lamp Free Use - Copythat end, Merinda convinces Jem to encourage the romantic advances of a man Jem can’t stand, which opens a large can of worms.  They also run afoul of The Morality Squad, whose main duty is to catch unescorted women after dark, and jail them.  Last, but not least, their work puts them in danger.

Although everyone seems to be against these two young women, they do have a couple of people in their corner:  Police Constable Jasper Forth along with newspaperman and reporter, Ray DeLuca, a recent Italian immigrant.  Newspaper Reading Man Silhouette Free Use - CopyFrom time to time, both men assist Jem and Merinda with their detective work, but sometimes they have to suffer the consequences for helping them.

Merinda and Jem are certainly swimming against the tide of Edwardian ideas of how women should behave.  The author does a great job describing the time period, and creating for the reader the “feel” of what it was like to live then.  The mystery was good, and I liked that there wasn’t anything offensive in it.  I wish the author had given more information about why Merinda and Jem feel so strongly about detecting.  Why do they continue doing it despite the danger, as well as, the ridicule they experience? If those questions were answered, it would go a long way toward understanding and connecting more with those characters.  I suggest this 4-star book to mystery readers, especially those who enjoy period settings.

“Feast for Thieves” by Marcus Brotherton

Book Cover Feast For Thieves

An Offer You Can’t Refuse!

Become a pastor for a year, or go to jail.  What would you choose? Jail  Imagine a guy named Rowdy, who did many brave things during World War II.   He received recognition and advancement in rank, only to lose it all at the end of the war.  All because Rowdy attempted to defend a lady’s honor, he was unfairly jailed, and stripped of everything he achieved in the military.  While in prison, he is befriended by Crazy Ake.  He is a handy guy to have on your side inside the jail, but a real liability outside of it.

After his release from prison, Rowdy finds himself broke and down on his luck.  Rowdy unwisely agrees to pull a holdup in a small Texas town with Crazy Ake.  In the confusion Thief Free Useafter the robbery, they are separated, and Rowdy ends up with all the cash.  Rowdy then decides to turn himself in to the local sheriff, and return all the money.

And that is when the story really gets interesting, because the sheriff makes him a most unusual offer.  If Rowdy will take over as the minister of their local church, and do the job for a year, his debt will be paid.  No jail time will need to be served.

The author takes us on a wild ride while Rowdy, who has no religious background whatsoever, attempts to pastor a church.  While doing that, he starts learning about God, reading the Bible, and he is instructed by the sheriff’s single daughter on how to be a pastor.  But he is also being pulled back into the dark side by Crazy Ake, even when Rowdy doesn’t want to be.  Before this book is over there is humor from the church people, and Rowdy’s attempts to pastor them.  There is also danger, stolen money, and an ending full of twists and turns.    Church White Free Use

This is a very original story idea.  The author does a great job telling this tale, of making you actually believe something like this could happen. Envision a robber who wants to return all the stolen money, and is then given the choice of becoming a pastor, or going to jail.  It is such an outrageous idea, but because it is, it will make you think, what would happen if such a choice was given to someone in real life?  It is so crazy, that it is almost believable, in the category of truth is stranger than fiction, that is.  There is also some very good Christian theology interjected between all that is happening in Rowdy’s often crazy life.  Some seamier sides of life are referred to, but not gone into detail about.  I recommend this 5-star book to anyone who enjoys well-written fiction.

Losing Mom

Last Saturday morning we buried my Mother.     Mom & Becky as Baby Feeding - Copy

Mom & Becky 1958

My Mom died suddenly and unexpectedly in our home a week ago this past Thursday (April 7th, 2016.)  Without warning, my dear Mother was plucked from our lives, and we are all devastated.  I am an only child, and my family is tiny.  It only consists of myself, my husband, and our two adult children, and, of course, my Mom.  Up until now,  I have already lost all of my family on both mom’s and dad’s sides, so I am no stranger to death.  But losing Mom is harder than all the rest put together.

Mom loved to joke around, and said outrageous things.  She was spunky and got a kick out of almost everything.  She was known as “The Candy Lady,” a name she proudly wore for many decades.   On Sundays, she took an assortment of candy bars, and candy she had purchased to give out to the kids after church.  Little and big “kids,” some in their seventies and eighties, flocked to her after the service to get a treat.

She even got in trouble sometimes these past few years at church.  Her “posse,” her group of friends, liked to sit in the back of the church together during the Sunday sermon.  They would dig into candy she had brought just for them, and sometimes all that paper wrapping from undoing candy would earn them glares, or even sharp words latter.

When I was growing up, Mom would dress up in the most outrageous costumes for our church’s annual Harvest Party.  She made it from stuff she threw together from around the house.  More often than not, she was the winner of the costume contest.  She loved to cook and made wonderful dinners, especially for the holidays and someone’s birthday.  She would literally spend days making the different dishes she would serve on those special occasions.

Mom loved to make faces for the camera, we have many treasured pictures of her doing that.  She helped me with every hard thing I ever had to do, and I don’t remember ever asking her for help.  She just showed up.  And whether it was a school play or one of us was in a talent show, or anything else, Mom and Dad, and latter just Mom, attended every one.  Barely a month ago, she set on the front row to watch a play my daughter was in, and heartily cheered her on.Thanksgiving 2012 Mom Silly Face

Mom Thanksgiving 2012

I was a painfully shy child, who grew up into a not quite as shy adult.  Even today, I find myself at a loss for words, when I desperately want to talk with others.  I would like to call people, but I hesitate for fear my call would be an interruption.  Or worse yet, that after saying “hello,” and a couple of sentences of greetings, I won’t be able to think of another word to say, and suffer dead air.  I find it easier to communicate with the written word.  But Mom was a shining star who  could strike up long conversations with perfect strangers.  Everyone knew when she was in a place, and making friends was a piece of cake for her.  She had many friends she talked to daily on the telephone.

Her telephone calls were a joy.  No matter what was going on in her life, she would call with real happiness in her voice.  She cheered me up often.  Especially in the last decade, when chronic illness trapped me inside my home for months on end.  Her daily calls were a lifeline for me that kept me connected  to her and to the world.  I wasn’t lonely despite my life being confined to my home.  Lots of times she had something really silly to say that would make me laugh, and bring chuckles to the rest of the family when I passed it on to them.  She longed to find something that would improve my chronic condition, along with my son’s.  And if we had any good thing happen to any of us in the family, she was overjoyed.  You would have thought this wonderful thing had happened to her, she was that happy about it.

Mom was a hard worker who grew up during the Great Depression.  Her father wasn’t always able to get a full week’s pay during that bleak era, so Mom and her family knew how to do without.  Despite that, she was always generous to a fault.  She often gave up something for herself, to make sure a family member had something.  She made a commitment to Christ as a young teenager, and a short time later, saw both her parents do the same.  She hopped around both the tennis and basketball courts in high school, earning letters in sports.  During the war years of World War II, she volunteered in the local hospital, and worked in a dime store.  Later she worked for Ma Bell, known as AT&T in those days.Mom & Dad - Copy

Mom & Dad 2005

I arrived barely a year and half after she and Dad married.  My birth almost killed her, literally.  Her heart stopped twice that night, but they were able to bring her back.  She also needed two complete blood transfusions during a blood shortage.  Phone calls were made and many people from our church got out of bed in the middle of the night to come donate blood, and pray that Mom and I survived.

Survive she did.  Not just my birth, but twelve years later when she had a grapefruit sized tumor in her chest.  After a radical mastectomy to remove it, along with the long tentacles that stretched down her arm, she refused chemotherapy, and became a cancer survivor of over forty years.  Mom even survived twelve years ago when, by God’s grace, it was discovered her blood was so thick that the doctor said she probably had only a matter of hours to live if she hadn’t gotten treatment.

A couple of years after that, she found Dad, her husband of more than fifty decades, hit with Macular Degeneration that took more than ninety percent of his eyesight, along with Parkinson’s Disease that took away his ability to walk and many other functions.  He became bed bound, and she did everything for him.  Despite how much work that was for a woman in her eighties, she was determined to keep him home, and that is what she did.  Often when attempting to move him into his wheelchair, he fell on her, causing them both to fall, and her to get hurt.  His passing left her a widow the past eight years.  Her dog, Lucky, became her constant companion, and she even cooked special meals for him!Mom & Lucky 2014 - Copy

Mom & Lucky the Dog, 2014

Since January, her blood thinning medicine had been causing her lots of terrible gastro side effects.  But at first we thought those gastro problems were her from her diet.  I suggested lots of things she should avoid to get rid of it.  She also called her doctor numerous times but was told she should just expect things like that “since she was old.”  Finally it came to me to check the possible side effects of the medicine she was taking, and bingo, that was it.  My husband was able to get her reluctant doctor to reduce the dosage, and mom’s numbers, we had not known were bad on her blood tests, improved, and the gastro side effects were about ninety percent better.  We were all so happy, and I really thanked God, thinking He had pointed me to looking up the medicine’s sides effects.

But then last Tuesday night, she called me saying, in the most pitiful sounding voice, that she had something new: terrible nausea.  My husband drove over to help, after which she told him to go on home.  In the middle of the night, she called again saying she was worse.  My husband took her to the hospital where she was given IV fluids and nausea medication, and Mom perked up immediately, her color returned, and she felt so much better.  Long a hospital hater, she surprised my husband when she said she wanted to stay at the hospital, but the doctor insisted she go.  Mom asked again to stay, but the doctor discharged her, telling her to go home and rest.  At this time, they had both been up all night.  But my husband was shocked by the very weakened condition she developed on the way back from the hospital.

Another call from mom brought my husband back to her home where he found her even weaker. He brought her to our house where she immediately went to sleep.  Twice during the night she was checked on, and again at eight when my husband went to work.  She appeared to be sleeping.  Two hours later, when my husband found her in the very same position, he discovered she had left us.  Less than forty-eight hours after receiving her first phone call, we found her passed away.  Less than forty-eight hours after that, we were having her funeral.  In the midst of that nightmare, we had police swarming the house after my husband reported her death.  They have to make sure there isn’t foul play when someone passes away in a home.  But it made the shock of her death even more surreal.

Later we learned that nausea can be a major sign of heart attacks in women. Why, oh why, didn’t I think to look up heart attack symptoms? I am full of regrets and what ifs.   If she was indeed having a heart attack, what if we had pushed for the hospital to keep her, would we still have her?  Should we have taken her to a second hospital?  I regret all the time we spent trying to change her diet, and she would tell me her symptoms hadn’t changed much.  My response was to tell her to give it some time, when in fact, food wasn’t causing her problems at all.  I feel I failed her.   I should have prayed more.  Maybe then, she would still be here.  I have shed buckets of tears, and I am racked with guilt….

Our Christian faith gives us the hope of seeing each other again, but in the meantime our grief is deep and wide, we are brokenhearted.  Our love for her was enormous.  If feels as if all the color has been drained from life, and my once Technicolor world, is now black and white.  Many have told me she was lucky not to have a period of prolonged suffering.  In my head, I know that is true, but my heart only breaks over this.  I feel far from God, and upset with Him.  Yet I know He is the only one who can help.Mom's Birthday 2015 - Copy

Mom’s 92nd Birthday, 2015, her last

As difficult as it was facing her death, and then her funeral, the hardest part is here now:  living each day without her.  Words keep playing over and over in my mind, from the song One More Day, by Diamond Rio.  They sum up a lot of what I am feeling, it is my heart’s cry, and I share them here with you:

One More Day by Diamond Rio

Last night I had a crazy dream
A wish was granted just for me
It could be for anything
I didn’t ask for money
Or a mansion in Malibu
I simply wished for one more day with you…

One more day, one more time
One more sunset maybe I’d be satisfied
But then again I know what it would do
Leave me wishing still for one more day
Leave me wishing still for one more day
Leave me wishing still for one more day with you

“Dressed for Death” by Julianna Deering

Guilty by a Whisker!

After almost a week of an elaborate costume party at the Cummins’ family estate, Alice English Estate Free UseHenley drops dead.  Alice was the fiancé of Talbot, the Cummins’ only son.  Even more shocking than her death, is the cause, an overdose of cocaine.  The party goers are startled even further when their host, well-respected philanthropist Sterling Cummins, is arrested for drug dealing–and possible murder.

So begins another romp through the pages of a mystery written in the classic whodunit style of Agatha Christie’s English mysteries.  Ms. Deering does such a good job of writing in that way, you will forget this was written by a modern author.  Fabulously wealthy Drew Farthering, is an amateur sleuth, and a personal friend of the Cummins’ family.  As a guest staying at the estate while attending the party, he steps forward to attempt to solve this case.  He is helped along the way by his loyal friend, Nick, and his new bride, Madeline.

Because of the shocking loss of lives that occurs in this mystery, Drew begins to question if his investigating causes more harm than good.  He has a serious heart-to-heart with himself about the helpfulness of his being an amateur sleuth.  Will this be the last Drew Farthering mystery?

Pastor Cartoon Free UseBefore this case comes to a close, the danger increases and more people are uncovered who are suspects.  Could it be the vicar, or the French wine merchant?  Perhaps it was one of the people on the estate’s staff.  The guilty party is revealed in a surprising twist at the end, astonishingly with the help of a cat!

This exciting story is full of twists and turns, along with a liberal dose of red herrings.  The author has crafted a very good whodunit, with a sleuth who has high moral standards.  It was a real pleasure to read this period mystery set in the 1920’s English countryside, written with a Christian viewpoint. Although this is part of the Drew Farthering Mystery Series, this story stands alone.  But for your own enjoyment, you should read the others. I highly recommend this 5-star book to any mystery lover, or fan of well-written fiction, you will not be disappointed.
