Que Sera, Sera (Whatever Will Be, Will Be)

“Does he love me, or am I the only one taking this relationship seriously?” Katie wonders He Loves Me, He Loves Me Not Smaller Free Useabout the professional basketball player, Brady James, who has swept her off her feet.  Since his career may be ending because of an injury, Brady has pulled back from her.  He has yet to tell Katie he loves her, and she feels the sting of it acutely.

A small town girl, she has moved to Dallas, and is working in an upscale bridal shop.  This all came about after Katie was picked to win an expensive wedding gown, and a magazine layout.  At the same time, she was jilted by her long-time boyfriend, Casey, whom she thought was going to propose.

My boyfriend’s back?

She is returning to her hometown often to help prepare, and attend, the wedding of her eighty-two year old grandmother, Queenie.   In fact, romance is all around Katie, as people ranging in age from the very young, to the senior set, are making romantic plans together.  All the while she is left wondering about Brady’s feelings for her, and now, Casey seems to be trying to rekindle their romance.

From the warring families, temperamental designers and nervous brides she works with, to her own large, persnickety family, this is a fun romp through Katie’s life.   Doris Day is featured in an entertaining thread that runs through the book, and just like Doris, it is sunshiny and cheery!

Well, that’s how we do it in my church!

Bride & Groom ClipArt Free UseThe way Queenie and her fiancé work out their denominational differences for their wedding is hilarious.  Also the phrase, “And that’s how we do it at the (fill in denomination of your choice) church!” becomes a running gag line used throughout the book. This story proves that romance does not have an age limit.  No one is ever too old to find love, or have a big splashy wedding, even if the bride and groom are in their eighties.

Interesting and memorable characters pepper this tale.  Debonair and suave, senior citizen Eduardo, master tailor to the stars–including Doris Day–charms everyone.  He is full of surprises.  From her opinion of modern church music, to her inability to distinguish between cell phone conversations and car radio programs, Katie’s Aunt Alva is a hoot.

Life isn’t always funny.

This story isn’t all laughs, it deals with serious subject matters, such as devastating, life-altering injuries.  Changes are compared to seasons.  Just as spring follows winter, the seasons change, and the old one comes to an end.  It is same with the seasons of life, even the hard ones change or come to an end, but with God’s help, they are much easier to live through.

I liked this story a lot.  It had just the right amount of sass, humor and serious subject matter, along with acknowledging we all need help from above.  This story doesn’t have any objectionable subject matter or language.  Every Girls Gets Confused is the second title in the series, Brides with Style, and stands on its own.  However, just enough information is given about the first story to pique your interest in reading it, too.  I highly recommend this 5-star book to anyone who enjoys a well-written, humorous romance.

“Called to Pray” by Linda Evans Shepherd

Book Cover Called to Pray 2

More Than a Feeling

Ever have someone suddenly come to mind?  More specifically, did you get the urge to pray for that person?  Or have you desperately called out to God for help in a dire situation, and seemingly out of nowhere, your prayer was answered?  This fascinating book contains an abundance of true stories about circumstances just like that.

Consider the story of a pastor whose small plane runs out of fuel, and there is no place to land, there is nothing but trees, homes and utility wires.  He is sure he will crash.  Small Airplane by Moon Free UseSuddenly, a freshly plowed field appears, and he lands uninjured in the soft dirt.  Later, one of his parishioners tell him she felt an overwhelming urge to pray for him on a particular day at a certain time, which she does.  They are both overwhelmed to discover that was the exact time he was about to crash his airplane, but then miraculously found the plowed field.

Or contemplate the time when Glenda and Marsha were out in the freezing cold hoping to talk to someone about the good news of Jesus.  They were thinking of turning back when they saw a lone woman, Sondra, at a bus stop.  Although intimidated by the way she stared at them, the girls asked Sondra if they could talk to her about God.  After some conversation, Sondra became a follower of Christ.  She then asked Glenda and Marsha how they knew where to find her.  Sondra said she was desperate, at the end of her rope, and had asked God that if He was real, to send someone to talk to her about Him.  That is exactly when Glenda and Marsha walked up to her in the freezing cold.

Betcha read more than one, these stories are incredible!

This book is full of amazing stories that highlight God’s perfect timing.  Often He has organized many seemingly random events to fit together perfectly to bring about the answer to a prayer.God Sky Writing Free Use - Copy

Called to Pray is wonderfully uplifting and encouraging.  The power of prayer is demonstrated throughout this volume.  God’s love for us is clearly shown, along with how much He cares about every aspect of our lives.  All of the stories are just a few pages long, so the entire volume can be read at once, or a little bit at a time.  Fair warning must be given, however, because these accounts are so interesting, it is hard to stop after just one.  I really liked this 5-star book, and  highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys true stories, or wants to know more about the power of prayer.

Pumpkin Pies and Thanksgiving Lines

Pumpkin Pie Slice Missing Free Use - Copy

Pass the Pie?

During this season of giving thanks, Thanksgiving that is, I recall the pumpkin pie incident of a few years ago that took place at our local warehouse club.  That year, for the first time, we were not having home baked pies, and we had decided to purchase them instead.  My husband had meant to pick them up earlier in the week, but he wasn’t able to do it.  Now time was running out, and it was the Wednesday before Thanksgiving.

At last my husband had a break, and rushed to the large warehouse club to pick up our pumpkin pie.  He was unprepared for the news that the pie section had been picked clean of pumpkin pies, as well as, any other pies they had for sale that day.  Happily, one of the bakers told him they were baking more pumpkin pies as they spoke, and if he came back at 6 PM, he could get one.

Has anyone ever seen the old “Turkey Drop” segment of the sitcom WKRP in Cincinnati?  A promotional give away for the radio station went bad, one in which they dropped live turkeys from a helicopter over a crowded shopping mall.  Too late, they discovered thatHelicopter Cartoon Free Use - Copy turkeys couldn’t fly.  Instead of free gifts winging down from the sky, the turkeys landed like sacks of wet sand.  The public was both horrified by witnessing it, and up-in-arms against the station.  The radio employees returned shell-shocked from the sight, and felt lucky to escape with their lives as the crowd turned into an angry mob wanting to avenge the turkeys.

Like lambs to the slaughter, we decided to send out daughter and son to pick one up.

Memories of that show came flooding back when my children returned, much later than they should have, with quite a tale.  Although they arrived at the bakery section much sooner than the appointed pickup time, they discovered the pies had been brought out early, and all of them had been sold.  The baker said more pies were due out in 45 minutes, and people were already lining up for them.

My children joined the huge line, only to witness absolute chaos break out when the fresh pies came out of the kitchen.  People rushed forward attempting to make a grab for them.  The bakers tried to make everyone stay in the line, but it was fast turning into a mob.  The employees were trying to enforce a one pie per person limit, which was met by cheers from some, and loud complaining from others.

As time went on, the mood of people in line became increasingly hostile.  Accusations of cutting in line were hurled by snarling people towards others around them.  Tempers among  those waiting rose to such a fevered pitch, my kids were afraid some were actually going to start trading blows.  While the evening drug on, and more people arrived clamoring for pies, the mood became very ugly.Angry People Cartoon Free UseAfter many hours in the line, and waiting through more than one cycle of pies baking and being brought out, my son and daughter received a pumpkin pie.  They said they felt lucky to have left there in one piece, let alone to have a pie in hand.  What took place at the warehouse club that night was unlike anything they had ever seen.

The irony was not lost on any of us that these pies, the thing that had become such a bone of contention, were going to be used at a celebration devoted to being thankful to Our Creator for our blessings.  Or that the night before, His creation almost resorted to violence to get the dessert for said celebration.

Although not everyone devotes the fourth Thursday in November to spiritual thought, a good many do, including our family.  We never thought we would be thanking God our children left the warehouse club bakery safe and unharmed, but that year we did.

As is often the case, the passing of time can allow the humor of these “adventures” to surface, and that is what has happened in this situation.  We now have a running joke asking our kids if they want to go to the warehouse club the night before Thanksgiving to get a pumpkin pie.  I am sure you can guess their answer!

Pumpkin Pie Slice Cartoon Free UseThis week, on the Monday before Thanksgiving, my husband was in that same warehouse club.  The pies were fast flying out of the bakery section, but he was able to snag one.  While he was checking out, another customer saw him in line and demanded, “You have a pumpkin pie, where did you get it?!”

He told her he had just picked it up in the bakery.  She hurried away saying, “they were completely out of them just a little bit ago.  I have to get one.”

After that, my husband asked the cashier if he was glad he wasn’t working in the bakery.  The man told him he had been asked, but he didn’t want to.  He was glad they didn’t make him, especially since the bakers were staying until 3 AM making as many pumpkin pies as they could….Turkey with Sign Cartoon Free Use

I wish all of you a wonderful and blessed Thanksgiving.  And if you are getting your pie from a warehouse club, my wish is that you get there quickly, and Godspeed!

“The Christmas Joy Ride” by Melody Carlson

Sleigh Bells Ring

“This is a Christmas Intervention!” Miranda almost shouted those words to a scowling Marcus, a man she had only just met. Yet here she stood in his kitchen making Christmas cookies with his seven-year-old daughter, getting the brunt of his anger.

Christmas Cookies on Baking Sheet Free Use

Miranda found herself in this uncomfortable position because of her friend Joy.  With Miranda’s help, her Christmas loving pal started a blog called Christmas Joy, and held a contest with five winners.  Joy, eighty-five years young, then decided she wanted to drive her RV along Route 66 from her Chicago home to Arizona.  Along the way, she wanted to stop at each contest winner’s location, and deliver their prize.

Get your kicks on Route 66!

Recently, Joy’s sons had convinced her to sell the home her husband built decades earlier, and relocate to an assisted living apartment in Phoenix.  Both men lived there, and wanted her closer to them.  Instead of flying out, as her children thought she would, Joy wanted to make this trip–secretly–instead.  As she made her way across the country, she planned to spread Christmas cheer.

“It’s a Christmas Joy Ride,” Joy enthusiastically tells Miranda as she asks her to come with her.

Ready for adventure?

Miranda is recovering from a messy divorce that has almost cleaned her out financially and emotionally.   Thinking a change would be good, and wanting to help Joy, Miranda agrees.  However, she is overwhelmed by how big the RV is, and that Joy has decorated it inside and out, including writing Christmas Joy Ride in large letters all over the outside.  They have barely made the first stop, when a few things begin to unravel. Christmas Joy Ride RV Decorated Free Use

Joy has no worries.  As she tells Miranda,  “Just have a little faith. God will watch over us.  And we will have a great adventure.  You’ll see!”

Before the Joy Ride is over, the women face a life-or-death situation, robbery and a bit of romance.  They endure exasperating experiences when trying to bestow the prizes, and an individual who is not happy to be a winner.  Their journey becomes a race against the weather, and the intense schedule they need to follow to make all the stops on time.

The Christmas Joy Ride is fun to read, and has a great story.  Like all good Christmas stories, it has a happy ending, and will leave a smile on your face.  Pick up this 5-star book and you, too, can enjoy a Christmas Joy Ride!  You will not be disappointed.  Use it to prepare for Christmas, or enjoy it any time of the year.  I highly recommend it to anyone who likes well-written stories set during the Christmas season.Christmas Merry Words with Santa Hat Free Usage

“Your Sacred Yes” by Susie Larson

Book Cover Your Sacred Yes

Yes or No?

What do you say yes to?  Are you choosy about what you agree to? Or do you have trouble saying, “no,” and have found yourself overwhelmed?  Susie Larson claims she can give you a calmer, less overextended life.  You just need to say yes to twelve things.  The author states those affirmations will also bring you a more fulfilling life, and closer to God.

Some of the twelve are:  necessary change, humility, and God’s wisdom.  Another one, my favorite, was “your worth,” which is seeing yourself as God sees you.  He sees us as having great value, someone that was worth dying for, and we are much loved.  Quoting the author:Heart Seashells You are Loved

“You are blessed with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly realms (Ephesians 1:3).  Say it:  I am blessed beyond measure, rich beyond comprehension!  I will live the full life God has promised me!”

Ready for a change!

Each “yes” has a chapter in the book devoted to it.  Those sections explain how the author defines each quality, and she shares a situation from her own life that illustrates the point.  Bible passages and a thorough discussion of the attribute is included, along with questions that will cause you to deeply examine your life as regards that quality.  The author has a section called, “A Wise Word” in each chapter, as well as, areas called, “Personal Reflection” and “Faith Declaration.”

Use this book as a personal devotional, or go through it as a group study.  Her website has a workbook that can be downloaded that has in-depth Bible study questions.  A bonus chapter at the end of the book is meant to be used over a time period of six weeks.  It is a combination of physical and faith challenges.  A DVD Study Companion is available as a separate purchase.

Peaceful LifeThis 5-star book is easy and interesting to read, and can be used without getting the extra purchase items.  I liked the personal examples the author shared, and was glad explanations of each topic were included.  Some of the suggestions might be hard to do, but the benefits, I think, would outweigh the effort.  If you feel stretched almost to the breaking point by your commitments, for the sake of yourself and your relationships, try to make changes.  The author suggests turning to God for help, and I agree.  I recommend this book as a tool to anyone who would like to make their life simpler, as well as, gain a stronger relationship with God.

“Last Act” by Craig Shirley

Book Cover Last Act

The Long Goodbye

Ronald Reagan was beloved by many, and criticized by a few.  This book sets out to explore the time after he left the White House, the last years of the President’s life.  It is a broad work that covers much of what was going on in our nation, and the world, during those years, along with the health issues he faced.

The author spent a lot of time going over the private journals Ronald Reagan kept while in office.  Mr. Shirley states that all the entries were made by a man still in full control of all his faculties.  He offers them as proof that the President was not suffering any forgetfulness, or early Alzheimer’s symptoms, while leading our country.

Many in the media didn’t support Reagan, and even panned him, but that was something Ronald Reagan & Flag Free Usethat did not concern him.  What he wanted was the support of the ordinary citizens.  His legacy consisted of ending the cold war, improving our military, increasing prosperity, and making many feel proud to be Americans.  With many every day Americans, his legacy also included winning their hearts.

That was never so apparent as when he passed away.  Even though the President had been out of the public eye for a good ten years, tremendous crowds turned out to view his body at his California library.  Many waited hours in horrible heat to pay their respects.  The viewing hours had to be extended, and still large crowds were turned away.  Others had lined the highway for the miles leading from the Reagan home to the library.  The numbers were even bigger when his body was brought to Washington, D.C. for viewing, and for the funeral.  People from every walk of life stood in line for hours to pay their last respects.  The crowd was staggering.

Apparently the media was caught off guard by all this.  Originally, his death was not given much coverage, and what there was, a lot was critical.  After the outpouring of public grief, some less hostile things started appearing along with more coverage.  Many tributes also came pouring in from other nations.  Soviet dissident and writer, Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, upon learning of Reagan’s death had this to say:

“In July 1975, I concluded my remarks in the Reception Room of the U.S. Senate with these words:  ‘Very soon, all too soon, your government will need not just extraordinary men–but men of greatness.  Find them in your souls.  Find them in your hearts.  Find them within the breadth and depth of your homeland.’  Five years later, I was overjoyed when just such a man came to the White House.  May the soft earth be a cushion to his present rest.”

Ronald Reagan in Cowboy Hat Free UseWhile reading this book, you might find your mind wandering back to the days Ronald Reagan was in the White House.  Some of the stories and scenes found on these pages might even bring a tear or two.  I highly recommend this 5-star book to any fan of Ronald Reagan, or those interested in history.

“And whatever else history may say about me when I’m gone, I hope it will record that I appealed to your best hopes, not your worst fears, to your confidence rather than your doubts.”–Ronald Reagan at the last Republican convention he addressed, Houston, 1992.

“The Horse of My Heart” Edited by Callie Smith Grant

Book Cover The Horse of My Heart

A Horse is a Horse….

Open the cover of this book and enter the world of horses, and those who love them.  This collection of over thirty true stories will touch your heart.  These tales cover the gamut of children’s horses, to horses that have played a major role in the life of adults.

Wanda Dyson remembers the day a horse named Lady somehow opened her front door, and let herself into the house on a mission of mercy.  Lady then led Wanda to a badly injured horse. Horses Pair Free Use

Shirley Zeller recounts what it was like to grow up on a remote horse ranch in North Dakota.  Despite it taking place in the 20th century, her experiences could have been with the cowboys of the 1800’s.

Sherri Gallagher shares idyllic days she, and her friend spent on horseback.  While munching peanut butter sandwiches and homemade cookies, they explored fields, forests and everything in between, all while atop their horses.

Not all the horses were owned by the people who adored them.  Claudia Wolfe St. Clair relates the love her mom had for the great racehorse, Secretariat.  She was so enamored with him, that a surprise Christmas visit to see the famous racer filled her with joy.  Not only did she see him, Secretariat came right up to her mom, and let her touch him.  The thrill she got from that still resonates off the pages today.

Hold your horses, is that right?

Despite knowing very little about horses, these stories were a delight to read.  Not only was I entertained, I learned some “horse facts.”  For instance, I was very surprised to find out the type of horse that lots of Amish people get to pull their buggies.  I also smiled when I discovered why, Macaroni “The White House Pony,” had to have chicken wire around him.

Hores Headshot Free UseI really liked this book, despite knowing nothing about horses before I read the first page.  If you don’t have any experience with horses, you might consider changing that after reading The Horse of My Heart.  This will be a treasure to those who already love these four-footed friends.  These are all short stories, so they can be read a little bit at a time, or the entire book can be read straight through.  Either way, it will be a real pleasure, even more so, since there are no objectionable scenes or language.  This book will leave a smile on your face long after it is finished.  I highly recommend this 5-star book to anyone who enjoys well-written or true stories–and most certainly to horse lovers.

The publisher has provided me with a complimentary copy of The Horse of My Heart through Revell Publishing for the purpose of review.  All opinions expressed are my own, and I was not required, or influenced, to give anything but an honest appraisal.  Despite my receiving the book free, it has not influenced my judgment.

“Last Chance Hero” by Cathleen Armstrong

Book Cover Last Chance Hero

The Home Team

“You don’t like football?!”  Those were the incredulous words that greeted Dr. Jess MacLeod on her first day in Last Chance, New Mexico.  Growing up, Jess dreamed of opening a medical practice in a little town.  Now that she is doing that, small town life is nothing like she had imagined.Football Free Use

High school football has the heart and soul of this little community.  Everyone turns out for football games whether they have children in high school or not, it is the town’s main social outlet.  But Jess doesn’t know a football from a basketball, and doesn’t see the need to.  As time goes on, she is amazed to find out her lack of interest in football becomes a stumbling block to community acceptance and romance!

Excitement is also running high with the recent return of their local boy who made good, Andy Ryan.  Andy was part of the team during the glory days of football for Last Chance, when he led the Pumas on to victory after victory.  Later, he was part of a professional team, and now Andy has returned to coach high school football at his alma mater.  The pressure is on, too, since the team is many years past their glory days.

Does she need a hero?

Andy is one of the first people that Jess meets, but unlike the rest of the town, she isn’t star struck.  She has never heard of him.  Despite that, Andy is intrigued by Jess, and tries to help her settle in.  Another local who befriends Jess is Elizabeth Cooley, a likeable senior citizen who seems to be related to most of the town.  Elizabeth isn’t ready for a new doctor, but she is interested in who Jess is personally–and what she believes.  Everyone says Elizabeth doesn’t believe in luck, and Jess would like to know what that means. Peper Circle

This story takes place against the backdrop of gorgeous desert sunsets, spicy chilies, and a gruff talking waitress that is soon becoming the bane of Jess’s existence.  There is also a small amount of the story devoted to the heart-break of an alcoholic parent, and the misery and regret that result from that.

I liked this tale and the characters a lot.  It is well-written, entertaining, and done from a Christian viewpoint.  I wish Last Chance really existed, because I would love to visit it, and meet the people.

Although this book is part of a series, it can be read without the earlier books.  However, Last Chance Hero doesn’t end on its own.  There are story-lines that don’t come to a complete end, and the reader is left hanging wondering what happened.  I hope there is at least one more book that will bring those to a close, because I would really like to know how things end.  Despite the hanging story-lines, this 4-star book was still enjoyable to read.  With that in mind, I recommend this book.

The publisher has provided me with a complimentary copy of Last Chance Hero through Revell Publishing for the purpose of review.  All opinions expressed are my own, and I was not required, or influenced, to give anything but an honest appraisal.  Despite my receiving the book free, it has not influenced my judgment.

Like a Bad Penny…

One year ago, Nikki’s best friend, Katie, died.  Today, Nikki along with Katie’s husband Tyler, are going to mark this day doing what Katie loved best, enjoying the outdoors.  Hopefully, this will help the two of them close the door on the intensive grief they have experienced the last twelve months.

However, their day had just gotten started when Nikki, a member of the TennesseeHelp Signs Free Use
Missing Persons Task Force, gets an emergency call.  A sixteen-year-old girl, Bridget, is missing.  Since this is Nikki’s area of expertise, her boss would like her to meet with Bridget’s family as soon as possible.

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,

Ten years earlier, Nikki’s sister Sarah, disappeared, one of a series of victims abducted by a serial killer the media dubbed, “The Angel Abductor.”  Her sister was the fifth of six girls that were eventually taken.  Despite a herculean effort, no trace of Sarah has ever been found.

Nikki has never given up hope of finding her sister, nor has she ever gotten rid of the guilt of she feels for Sarah’s disappearance.  This one-time school teacher changed her career, and went to the police academy.  She wanted to devote herself to continuing the search for her sister, and to help other people who have found themselves in this same nightmare.

I will fear no evil.

All these years later, the Angel Abductor seems to be back, and to be responsible for Bridget’s abduction.  Now he is using updated methods, and has been stalking her. This grown man connected with Bridget on social media, and has been chatting with her for a couple of months.  Posing as a teenage boy, with fake pictures of himself, he had convinced Bridget he was her best friend, and they should meet.Great Smokey Mountains National Park Free Use

The few leads they have seem to point to the Great Smokey Mountains National Park, as the place Bridget is being held.  However, this is an area of thousands of acres of uncharted wilderness.   But is this even the correct place, or just another dead end?  Time is of the essence because the first forty-eight hours are the most important in cases like this.  Will Nikki be able to track this man down and save Bridget?  And will she finally get the answers to her sister’s abduction?

Vendetta is the first book in the Nikki Boyd Files, stands on its own, and is told from a Christian viewpoint.  This is a fast-paced suspenseful novel, that had a surprising twist towards the end, and will keep readers on the edge of their seats.   I recommend this 5-star book to those who enjoy thrilling, real-life story lines.

The publisher has provided me with a complimentary copy of Vendetta through Revell Publishing for the purpose of review.  All opinions expressed are my own, and I was not required, or influenced, to give anything but an honest appraisal.  Despite my receiving the book free, it has not influenced my judgment.
