“Satan Exposed” by Larry Richards

Have it All!

God wants each of us to experience life on earth in such a way that we get a bit of Heaven in the here and now.  If that isn’t happening for you, according to the author, it is because Satan is keeping you from it.  Humans were originally charged by God with the care of the world, to uphold and support all that is good.  Despite the fall of man, we can still do that, and experience the satisfaction God intended us to have from that job.  In order to do that, we need to incorporate thirteen gifts God has for us.  When using those gifts, we will experience a taste of God’s eternal community of love.

The thirteen gifts are:

  1. The Gift of Core Community
  2. The Gift of Choice
  3. The Gift of Family
  4. The Gift of the Law
  5. The Gift of a Community of Faith
  6. The Gift of Restoration
  7. The Gift of God’s Discipline
  8. The Gift of Uniqueness
  9. The Gift of Provision
  10. The Gift of Truth
  11. The Gift of Peace
  12. The Gift of Eternal Life, Now!
  13. The Gift of Unconditional Acceptance

The author goes into great detail about what each one of these thirteen items are. He gives recommendations about how to have them in our lives, along with ways to enjoy and experience them.  The concrete examples he gives from his own life, as well as, from scripture, are easy to understand, and interesting.  For instance, Mr. Richards relates about the time he discovered a contractor he hired was cheating him.  Despite being upset with that knowledge, the author recalled Jesus’ words to “bless those who despitefully use you.”  The outcome of that story is amazing.

Many of the suggestions are common sense.  We often “know” ways we could make our life better, yet we have a hard time putting them into practice.  Satan is the reason for that.  He wants to undermine the good we try to have in our lives, or do in the world.

Satan tries to confuse and mislead us, and the author gives examples of how that happens.  As Hosea 4:6 states, “my people perish for lack of knowledge.” If Satan has thwarted us from learning about something, we will not be able to use a gift because we  have been prevented from being taught about it.  One of the purposes of this book is to give people that knowledge.

The author makes some excellent points.  I do not agree with his interpretation of Genesis 1.  However, I do agree with the other points he makes.  I think it would be worthwhile for each of us to examine our lives for ways we could experience more of what God wants for us, and how these thirteen items might help with that.  Also, it would be wise to think about measures to put into place to keep Satan from sabotaging us.  As we are warned in 1 Peter 5:8 to, “Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour.”

Experiencing additional contentment and joy in life, along with more of God’s love, is certainly something to strive for.  I recommend this 5-star book to anyone who has ever been frustrated in their life, or those who would like a greater sense of satisfaction and closeness to The Lord in their daily living.

Through a comedy of errors, the Wimplegate family has purchased a livestock auction business, not an art and antique business like they own in Boston.  Yet the clues to the whereabouts of the missing painting clearly pointed to Pine Gap.  They no sooner arrive, Cow Free Usewhen Grandfather Elmer’s mind starts slipping, and he becomes prey to every scheme unscrupulous local characters try to interest him in.  Additionally, Miranda and Elmer need to learn to run the sale barn, much to the consternation of the long-time manager, Wyatt Ballentine–who is unhappy because he had always planned on purchasing it.

Travel can broaden your horizons, as well as, other things….

The longer Miranda is in Pine Gap, the more mysteries unfold, including that of Wyatt’s background, along with his feelings for her.  Yet life back in Boston always beckons her to return, making anything that happens in Pine Gap seem unreal.

This tale has lots of twists and turns, which will keep your interest, and the pages turning.Money Bag Huge Free Use  I liked this story a lot.  It will take you on a wild ride through the small-town life of the Missouri Ozarks, to the snobbery of the upper crust of Boston society.  In between, is a doctor who thinks character can be determined by bumps on one’s head, a girl who gains self-esteem along with confidence in herself, and the possible missing heir to a very wealthy family.  There is humor, mystery, and some romance, all kept clean through the talented pen of a Christian story-teller.  I highly recommend this 5-star book to anyone who enjoys clean fiction.

The cover of this book is made of a leather-like material that is stamped with an intricate design of hearts, birds, and nature.  It is soft to the touch, and pleasing to the eye.

Ready for a cool change?

Happy New Year Words Fireworks Free UseAny time of the year is great to start spending time reading, and contemplating God’s word.  However, with the start of the New Year, a resolution could be made to do that now.  Getting this book could help make that happen.

There are many things to like about this book, including the way it looks, its size and feel.  Also, having a one page format goes a long way toward knocking down the roadblocks that come up when trying to consistently follow a daily devotional.

Just remember this…

There is one thing about this book that I both like, as well as, dislike–and that is the author writing as if God is speaking.  I am always concerned when someone attempts to write words they think would come from God, it is a big responsibility.  The reader needs to understand these words are written through the filter of the author’s viewpoints, and not straight from God’s mouth.  On the other hand, hearing the scriptures expanded on in the “voice” of God brings a lot of realism and personalization to the reader.  The bottom line:  always check out anything one reads with God’s actual words in the Bible.Bible Open Free Use

With that said, I like this book, a lot.  I highly recommend it to anyone, at any time of the year.  If you would like something to use, along with the Bible, to draw nearer to God, I recommend you get this 5-star book!

Desperate Times, Desperate Measures

Why would an attractive single mom be willing to marry a complete stranger, and sign over half of a Wyoming  ranch to him?  Bonnie Gibbs can answer that question.

She has just lost both her parents, and grandparents, in a tragic accident.    They were Bonnie’s strength and prayer support.  Without them, she doesn’t know how she will be able to stand against the constant berating and conniving that comes from her ex-husband, Ed.  Currently, he is trying to profit from the loss of her family.  In the years since their divorce, Ed has delighted in taking her to court out of pure hatefulness.

Now, he is threatening to do that again, hoping to get some of Bonnie’s recent inheritance.Cowboy on Horse Fancy Blanket Free Use - Copy  Her lawyer has told her the only way to really put an end to Ed’s haranguing, is to re-marry, prove she has a stable home life for the children, and move far away from her Florida home.  Her boss, Dick, has been telling her for years that she needs a real cowboy.  A man like that will be true to her, kind, and honorable, or so he says.

Feeling at her breaking point, she tells Dick to get her a cowboy.  One who will marry her, be a father to her three children, and help run her grandparent’s ranch.  What she offers in exchange, or to buy him with, is half the ownership of the ranch.

Can two strangers make a life together?

Baya McKnight, loves the bachelor life, and has been a well-known rodeo rider for years.  But a recent accident with a bull left him with multiple fractures, and ended his career.  Still in casts and barely able to move, Dick has come to him with this strange proposition.

Horse in Mountain Meadow Free UseBonnie wonders if she has lost her mind to be thinking of marrying a stranger, and putting the lives of her children, and herself in his hands.  Plus, she he doesn’t know anything about ranching, or if she could make a go of it money-wise.  Ultimately, she decides only God can help her make the right decisions.

This story has a really interesting premise, and kept me wanting to read the next page to see what would happen. Just like in life, many of the characters were either really likable, or really dislikable.  The author did a good job making them seem like real people.  This tale gets into the reality of what it would take to make a ranch profitable, especially if the ones doing the work were just two adults, and three small children.  It also explores how awkward it would be to start a relationship after the marriage vows are said.  Some of the joys and difficulties for both a step-parent, and the children, were shown, as well.

I liked this story, and was really hoping for a good outcome for the characters.  It is especially gratifying to read something that is free from inappropriate language and situations.  Even better, Bonnie has a strong Christian faith, and thoroughly believes the Lord will help her in all situations.  The words in this book will paint a vivid picture of a pretty, Wyoming ranch in your mind’s eye, and you might find yourself wishing to go there, too.  I recommend this 5-star book to anyone who likes romances, cowboys or Christian fiction.Horse Crossing a Stream Free Use

What do pumpkins, sunflowers, lilies and pine trees have in common?  They all come together in this volume for some remarkable children’s stories. Snowflace Blue Free Use

This is a collection of four former stand-alone books, which the author refers to as parables.  Ms. Higgs’ overwhelming joy of becoming a Christian, along with the newness she found in Christ, was the inspiration for, The Pumpkin Patch Parable.

Spring Words Free UseThe Parable of the Lily, The Sunflower Parable, and The Pine Tree Parable are the other titles that followed, and make up this treasury.  Each one takes place in a different season:  winter, spring, summer and fall.  All of these tales were first read to the author’s children, and just like Biblical parables, there is a moral, or virtue in each one.

This lovely book was a real treat to read, and look at. I liked that each story represented a different season.  These stories will really catch a child’s interest, and the bright colors will appeal to them, too.  When I was looking at this book, a family member said, “this is a happy book, you just feel happy when you look at these pages.”  That is very true–the colors, pictures, and stories–all bring a smile to your face, and will warm Leaves Autumn Cartoon Free Useyour heart.  There is nothing wrong with a story that is told for pleasure only, but the fact that each of these parables have point to make, is an added bonus.  Get this 5-star book, you will not be disappointed.  I recommend it.

“Whispers in the Reading Room” by Shelley Gray

Book Cover Whispers in the Reading Room

Some Enchanted Afternoon

Was it her imagination, or did librarian Lydia Bancroft just catch that handsome man Library Inside Free Usestaring at her in the reading room?  Set in 1893 Chicago, bookish Lydia was brought up to be part of a society she is secretly no longer a member of, those who are very rich.  Her mother and her were left almost penniless after her father’s death.  Mrs. Bancroft insists they try to keep up appearances, not revealing their financial losses, and hope Lydia will make a good match with a rich man.

You may see a stranger…

Jason seems to be just such a man, and has proposed to Lydia.  Mrs. Bancroft has pinned all her hopes of getting out of poverty on this marriage.  On paper, this appears to be a good match, but in real life, things aren’t coming together as easily.  Also, Jason may not be what he seems.  Additionally, there is the attraction Lydia feels towards the mystery man from the library, who she learns is Sebastian Marks.

Across a crowded room.

As Marks and Lydia go from strangers to friends, she is warned that Sebastian is very rich, but also a man feared by most of Chicago.  She is told he is from the worst part of town, and involved in unseemly businesses.  Yet this doesn’t sound like the well-read and obviously well-educated, kind gentleman Lydia has spent some time with.  Mystery, danger and unanswered questions swirl around Sebastian.

You will find your true love….but will Lydia?

Before this story ends, a body is found, Lydia will be a murder suspect, and her finances will look even more grim.  Worse yet, in her mother’s eyes, Lydia may lose her place in polite society.  She also finds that books aren’t a substitute for real life and friends, but will that knowledge come in time for her to find true happiness?  Will Lydia get involved with a man who is secretly violent, and could ultimately hurt her?  Or is she destined never to find love, and will Lydia, along with her mother, be forced to live out their days in poverty?

Books Two Cartoon Free UseThis story really kept my interest, and the descriptions of life and the city at that time rang true.  Having the book set just after the Chicago World’s Fair brought in an interesting aspect to the story.   This is a clean tale, from a Christian viewpoint.  I wish there would have been an epilogue at the end.  Something that gave a little more about what happened with the four main characters, especially down the road a few years.  Whispers in the Reading Room is the third book in the Chicago World’s Fair Mystery Series, but this story definitely stands on its own.   This is an enjoyable 5-star book, and well-written.  I recommend it to those who like mysteries, romances or stories set in the late 1800’s.

Hello Wee Lads and Lasses!

What is the best way to teach a child about another country?  Tell that little person how Bagpipes Cartoon Free Usechildren live in a different part of the world!  That is exactly what the author does in this book.  In this case, the country is Scotland, and lots of interesting things can be learned in this volume–all through the eyes of a child.

For instance, mother and father are called Mathair and Dadadh, respectively.  Boys in Scotland might be named Ian, Connor or Malcolm.  Popular girl’s names are Aillen, Kelsey and Margaret.  Girls in general can be referred to as a lass.

When children sit down to eat in Scotland, they might dine on cullen shink which is a soup featuring haddok fish along with potatoes and onions. Oats are a popular food that is often eaten as a breakfast item, or as an ingredient in many dishes.   On very special occasions, the Scottish children might be served haggis.  That is a sheep’s stomach that is stuffed with spices, oats, meat, onions and cooked.  Favorite desserts include the Scottish tablet, a fudge-like candy, and the clootie dumpling, a pudding with raisins, sugar, milk and syrup.

“Every Girl Gets Confused” by Janice Thompson

Book Cover Every Girl Gets Confused

Que Sera, Sera (Whatever Will Be, Will Be)

“Does he love me, or am I the only one taking this relationship seriously?” Katie wonders He Loves Me, He Loves Me Not Smaller Free Useabout the professional basketball player, Brady James, who has swept her off her feet.  Since his career may be ending because of an injury, Brady has pulled back from her.  He has yet to tell Katie he loves her, and she feels the sting of it acutely.

A small town girl, she has moved to Dallas, and is working in an upscale bridal shop.  This all came about after Katie was picked to win an expensive wedding gown, and a magazine layout.  At the same time, she was jilted by her long-time boyfriend, Casey, whom she thought was going to propose.

My boyfriend’s back?

She is returning to her hometown often to help prepare, and attend, the wedding of her eighty-two year old grandmother, Queenie.   In fact, romance is all around Katie, as people ranging in age from the very young, to the senior set, are making romantic plans together.  All the while she is left wondering about Brady’s feelings for her, and now, Casey seems to be trying to rekindle their romance.

From the warring families, temperamental designers and nervous brides she works with, to her own large, persnickety family, this is a fun romp through Katie’s life.   Doris Day is featured in an entertaining thread that runs through the book, and just like Doris, it is sunshiny and cheery!

Well, that’s how we do it in my church!

Bride & Groom ClipArt Free UseThe way Queenie and her fiancé work out their denominational differences for their wedding is hilarious.  Also the phrase, “And that’s how we do it at the (fill in denomination of your choice) church!” becomes a running gag line used throughout the book. This story proves that romance does not have an age limit.  No one is ever too old to find love, or have a big splashy wedding, even if the bride and groom are in their eighties.

Interesting and memorable characters pepper this tale.  Debonair and suave, senior citizen Eduardo, master tailor to the stars–including Doris Day–charms everyone.  He is full of surprises.  From her opinion of modern church music, to her inability to distinguish between cell phone conversations and car radio programs, Katie’s Aunt Alva is a hoot.

Life isn’t always funny.

This story isn’t all laughs, it deals with serious subject matters, such as devastating, life-altering injuries.  Changes are compared to seasons.  Just as spring follows winter, the seasons change, and the old one comes to an end.  It is same with the seasons of life, even the hard ones change or come to an end, but with God’s help, they are much easier to live through.

I liked this story a lot.  It had just the right amount of sass, humor and serious subject matter, along with acknowledging we all need help from above.  This story doesn’t have any objectionable subject matter or language.  Every Girls Gets Confused is the second title in the series, Brides with Style, and stands on its own.  However, just enough information is given about the first story to pique your interest in reading it, too.  I highly recommend this 5-star book to anyone who enjoys a well-written, humorous romance.

“Called to Pray” by Linda Evans Shepherd

Book Cover Called to Pray 2

More Than a Feeling

Ever have someone suddenly come to mind?  More specifically, did you get the urge to pray for that person?  Or have you desperately called out to God for help in a dire situation, and seemingly out of nowhere, your prayer was answered?  This fascinating book contains an abundance of true stories about circumstances just like that.

Consider the story of a pastor whose small plane runs out of fuel, and there is no place to land, there is nothing but trees, homes and utility wires.  He is sure he will crash.  Small Airplane by Moon Free UseSuddenly, a freshly plowed field appears, and he lands uninjured in the soft dirt.  Later, one of his parishioners tell him she felt an overwhelming urge to pray for him on a particular day at a certain time, which she does.  They are both overwhelmed to discover that was the exact time he was about to crash his airplane, but then miraculously found the plowed field.

Or contemplate the time when Glenda and Marsha were out in the freezing cold hoping to talk to someone about the good news of Jesus.  They were thinking of turning back when they saw a lone woman, Sondra, at a bus stop.  Although intimidated by the way she stared at them, the girls asked Sondra if they could talk to her about God.  After some conversation, Sondra became a follower of Christ.  She then asked Glenda and Marsha how they knew where to find her.  Sondra said she was desperate, at the end of her rope, and had asked God that if He was real, to send someone to talk to her about Him.  That is exactly when Glenda and Marsha walked up to her in the freezing cold.

Betcha read more than one, these stories are incredible!

This book is full of amazing stories that highlight God’s perfect timing.  Often He has organized many seemingly random events to fit together perfectly to bring about the answer to a prayer.God Sky Writing Free Use - Copy

Called to Pray is wonderfully uplifting and encouraging.  The power of prayer is demonstrated throughout this volume.  God’s love for us is clearly shown, along with how much He cares about every aspect of our lives.  All of the stories are just a few pages long, so the entire volume can be read at once, or a little bit at a time.  Fair warning must be given, however, because these accounts are so interesting, it is hard to stop after just one.  I really liked this 5-star book, and  highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys true stories, or wants to know more about the power of prayer.

Pumpkin Pies and Thanksgiving Lines

Pumpkin Pie Slice Missing Free Use - Copy

Pass the Pie?

During this season of giving thanks, Thanksgiving that is, I recall the pumpkin pie incident of a few years ago that took place at our local warehouse club.  That year, for the first time, we were not having home baked pies, and we had decided to purchase them instead.  My husband had meant to pick them up earlier in the week, but he wasn’t able to do it.  Now time was running out, and it was the Wednesday before Thanksgiving.

At last my husband had a break, and rushed to the large warehouse club to pick up our pumpkin pie.  He was unprepared for the news that the pie section had been picked clean of pumpkin pies, as well as, any other pies they had for sale that day.  Happily, one of the bakers told him they were baking more pumpkin pies as they spoke, and if he came back at 6 PM, he could get one.

Has anyone ever seen the old “Turkey Drop” segment of the sitcom WKRP in Cincinnati?  A promotional give away for the radio station went bad, one in which they dropped live turkeys from a helicopter over a crowded shopping mall.  Too late, they discovered thatHelicopter Cartoon Free Use - Copy turkeys couldn’t fly.  Instead of free gifts winging down from the sky, the turkeys landed like sacks of wet sand.  The public was both horrified by witnessing it, and up-in-arms against the station.  The radio employees returned shell-shocked from the sight, and felt lucky to escape with their lives as the crowd turned into an angry mob wanting to avenge the turkeys.

Like lambs to the slaughter, we decided to send out daughter and son to pick one up.

Memories of that show came flooding back when my children returned, much later than they should have, with quite a tale.  Although they arrived at the bakery section much sooner than the appointed pickup time, they discovered the pies had been brought out early, and all of them had been sold.  The baker said more pies were due out in 45 minutes, and people were already lining up for them.

My children joined the huge line, only to witness absolute chaos break out when the fresh pies came out of the kitchen.  People rushed forward attempting to make a grab for them.  The bakers tried to make everyone stay in the line, but it was fast turning into a mob.  The employees were trying to enforce a one pie per person limit, which was met by cheers from some, and loud complaining from others.

As time went on, the mood of people in line became increasingly hostile.  Accusations of cutting in line were hurled by snarling people towards others around them.  Tempers among  those waiting rose to such a fevered pitch, my kids were afraid some were actually going to start trading blows.  While the evening drug on, and more people arrived clamoring for pies, the mood became very ugly.Angry People Cartoon Free UseAfter many hours in the line, and waiting through more than one cycle of pies baking and being brought out, my son and daughter received a pumpkin pie.  They said they felt lucky to have left there in one piece, let alone to have a pie in hand.  What took place at the warehouse club that night was unlike anything they had ever seen.

The irony was not lost on any of us that these pies, the thing that had become such a bone of contention, were going to be used at a celebration devoted to being thankful to Our Creator for our blessings.  Or that the night before, His creation almost resorted to violence to get the dessert for said celebration.

Although not everyone devotes the fourth Thursday in November to spiritual thought, a good many do, including our family.  We never thought we would be thanking God our children left the warehouse club bakery safe and unharmed, but that year we did.

As is often the case, the passing of time can allow the humor of these “adventures” to surface, and that is what has happened in this situation.  We now have a running joke asking our kids if they want to go to the warehouse club the night before Thanksgiving to get a pumpkin pie.  I am sure you can guess their answer!

He told her he had just picked it up in the bakery.  She hurried away saying, “they were completely out of them just a little bit ago.  I have to get one.”

After that, my husband asked the cashier if he was glad he wasn’t working in the bakery.  The man told him he had been asked, but he didn’t want to.  He was glad they didn’t make him, especially since the bakers were staying until 3 AM making as many pumpkin pies as they could….Turkey with Sign Cartoon Free Use

I wish all of you a wonderful and blessed Thanksgiving.  And if you are getting your pie from a warehouse club, my wish is that you get there quickly, and Godspeed!
