“The Printer and the Preacher: Ben Franklin, George Whitefield, and the Surprising Friendship that Invented America” by Randy Petersen

Book Cover The Printer and the Preacher

Travel Back in Time

A lot of well-researched history will be found between the covers of this book.  The author presents much in-depth information about both Ben Franklin and George Whitefield, individually.  This includes the time of their birth, along with what their parents were like, their family structure, and relationships with their siblings.  Colonial Storefront Williamsburg Free Use

There is a tremendous amount of background data about the society of the day, including people, events and religion.  The events that took place in both England and America are included since the men spent various seasons of their lives in both places.  All of the information the author has gathered is given in a very intriguing way.  He suggests the men might have been a part of the many interesting Colonial Couple Free Usehappenings that he renders.

However, this is supposed to be a book about the relationship between Ben Franklin and the pastor, George Whitefield.  Although there is a small amount of the book devoted to that, for the most part, this volume gives a history of these two men’s individual lives.  Very little of the book is devoted to interactions between the two, let alone the friendship, that these men were supposed to have had.

You will learn a lot about what life was like in the past.

Church Window Free UseI enjoyed learning about both Ben Franklin and George Whitefield, as well as, what life was like then.  Each man led a fascinating life.  The odyssey both men made from humble beginnings to living well-known successful lives is amazing.  George Whitefield’s faith journey was very thought-provoking.  I found the parts about Whitefield caught my interest the most.  There are also some interesting time-lines in the back of the book.  But I was really hoping to learn about the friendship the two shared, especially since that was part of the book’s title.  I also wanted to know more about how their friendship influenced America, which was also in the title.  It was disappointing to find very little information about that.

Although this is a well-written history, it doesn’t cover the subject matter it stated.  Colonial Men Free UseBecause of that, this is a four-star book.  If you want to learn about a relationship between Ben Franklin and George Whitefield, and what that did for America, I cannot recommend this book.  However, as a compelling history of the time period both these men lived in, along with an account of these men’s individual lives, I can certainly endorse it.

Who are You?

One dark night, a small boy who doesn’t speak is found naked, and abandoned, in a local park.   Suddenly, Maven, a widow on medical leave, finds herself the foster mother for this mystery child.  Head with Question Mark

Maven has never had children, or been a part of the foster system.  However, her social worker friend Lizzie, believes Maven and this child are perfect for each other.  Plus, the boy’s erratic behavior has worn down everyone else.

Has she bitten off more than she can chew?

The boy, who Maven dubs Moses, screams and cries when touched.  He arranges his toys in a perfect circle, and sits in the middle not talking.  Moses sleeps very little, and screams most of the night.

At first, Maven thinks Moses might be autistic, but in a short time, it appears he is dealing with the aftereffects from a severely stressful situation.  As time goes on, Moses begins to talk a bit, and allows hugs sometimes.  And Maven falls in love with him.

Will a life be lost, or more than one?

Suddenly, Moses disappears from Maven’s home. She is distraught, and worried.  The police believe he left of his own accord, but Maven doubts that.  Next door neighbor Paul, a policeman and a good friend, agrees to help Maven try to find Moses on their own.  Their search for the truth uncovers a very disturbing situation.  It also turns into a dangerous, if not deadly, predicament.

Crosses Three with Orange Sunrise Behind Free Use - CopyThis fast moving, 147 page book, contains suspense along with romance, and is written from a Christian point of view.  The darker the situation becomes, the more the hope of Christ is brought into the story, and I found that very uplifting.

There is not any objectionable language in the story.  However this book does deal with some dark situations, which might be inappropriate for young readers.  Some characters and events from another story are referred to, but Deadly Intent can be enjoyed without reading previous works.  I recommend this 5-star book to anyone who enjoys mysterious suspense stories with a Christian worldview.

What is the purpose of your life?

The is the true story of Ashley Smith who was held captive for seven hours by a desperate man, Brian Nichols, a fugitive from justice who shot and killed four people earlier that day.  On March 11, 2005, Brian Nichols shot and killed four people in the Atlanta courthouse.  He then stole a car and made his getaway.  While a massive man-hunt was launched to find him, Ashley was going about her business in an Atlanta suburb.  Ashley already had a lot on her plate in her own life, so gave little thought to the dangerous situation unfolding around her.  She didn’t believe it would affect her.

At the time, Ashley was a young widow, and a drug addict.  She was desperately trying to kick her drug habit, and regain custody of her five year old daughter, Paige.  One of the Sign Single Mom Free Usesteps she was taking to change her life was moving into an apartment on her own.  Along with working on March 11th, she was busy finishing up her move that day.

While she was walking towards her apartment, Brian jumped her, held a gun to her head and forced her into her new apartment.  She didn’t realize he was the murderer that was on the loose until he told her who he was.  That information only added to her terror.

A Life or Death Situation

This story will keep you on the edge of your seat as Ashley relates how she was able, after lots of talking and desperate prayers, to establish a rapport with Brian.  To begin with, he told her he wasn’t comfortable with her at all.  She was terrified he was going to shoot her right then.  But before the night is over, he allowed her to read to him out loud portions of her Bible study, The Purpose Driven Life.  Ashley was able to convince Brian it wasn’t mere chance that he ended up in her apartment complex, and taking her hostage.  God arranged their meeting as part of the purpose He had for both Brian’s and Ashley’s lives.

Praying Woman with Sunset Free Use - CopyShe credits God for many miracles that took place during her ordeal with Brian.  This includes the fact that Brian did not kill her, even though he had already killed four people just a few hours earlier.  An additional amazing fact was that he eventually let her go, unharmed.  Even more of her prayers were answered when Brian was taken into custody without anyone else being hurt.

Not only was this a traumatic event for Ashley to live through, her captivity with Brian became the situation that allowed her to completely turn away from drug use.  Although she had been wanting to be free of this habit, she was never able to do it up until this time.  This circumstance in her life became the defining moment when she was able to muster the strength to finally move forward in her life drug free.  Starting September 18, the movie, Captive, based on this book is being released in theaters.

“A House Divided” by Robert Whitlow

Book Cover A House Divided

A Power Greater Than Ourselves

Small town lawyer, Corbin Gage, has a chance to take part in a David versus Goliath type of case.  Two young boys have developed cancer.  Corbin thinks the fertilizer plant, the only employer of good jobs in his southern town, is responsible.  He believes they have dumped chemicals that have caused these two boys to get sick. Taking on a case like this one will require stamina, resources and finances that Corbin hasn’t had in years.

Corbin is an alcoholic, and has been for decades.  His law practice is neglected, and alcohol runs his life. Years of drinking have dulled his mind, as well as, drained his personal finances, along with those of his law practice.  Despite being a dysfunctional parent, both his children, Ray and Roxy, have followed in his footsteps and become lawyers.  Neither work with him.  They both keep Corbin at arm’s length or farther, from them.

Hanging on by a thread.  Thread & Needle Free Use

Lately, the consequences of his drinking have really caught up with Corbin, and he is barely hanging on.  Recently, he had to spend a night in the local jail when caught drunk driving.  Ray and his wife are threatening to take away the one-on-one time he has with his only grandson.  Billy is the only bright light in his life, and he is about to be yanked away from him because of his drinking.

This case is a real hornet’s nest.

Law Book Free UseCorbin hasn’t taken a big case like this one in years, and no one thinks he is still capable of doing it–but he would like to prove everyone wrong.  He really wants to help these children, and their families.  Corbin has a history of hurting and disappointing Ray and Roxy because of his drinking.  Now, if he gets involved with this case, it, too, could have negative consequences for both their careers.  He has never admitted to being an alcoholic, but now just might be that time.

I really liked these characters, and hope I get a chance to meet them again in the author’s future books.  This book’s first page pulls you in, and you will be hard-pressed to put it down until reaching the last one.  The author is a highly skilled story teller.  When Corbin is struggling with drinking, you really get inside his head and feel the internal battle he is waging.  You will feel as if you have visited an AA meeting with Corbin, and understand how hard it will be for him to do the twelve steps of the program–but that he can do it.

Mr. Whitlow ended the story in a way I didn’t see coming, and I really liked that.  This is a great five-star, legal thriller written from a Christian viewpoint, and I highly recommend it.  You will not be disappointed.

“Mind of Her Own” by Diana Lesire Brandmeyer

Book Cover Mind of Her Own 2

You Must Have Me Mixed Up With Someone Else….

Louisa is married to workaholic lawyer, Collin Copeland. They have three children, and live in an expensive Midwestern suburb.  After a conk on the head renders her unconscious and in the emergency room, she wakes up as someone else.  She tells everyone she is Jazz Sweet, Ocean & Palms Free Usea single, successful romance writer who lives by the ocean in Florida.   Jazz is an unconventional free spirit, about as far removed from Louisa as could be.  She has no memory of Collin, the children, or anything else.

Jazz is sure a mix up has taken place at the hospital.  There must be some other woman named Louisa that belongs with Collin.  When her “husband” wants to take her home, she feels he is a complete stranger.  Jazz wonders if she might be going off with someone dangerous.  But since she can’t find a purse or cell phone belonging to Jazz, leaving her without money or contacts, she consents to go home with Collin.

Who are you again?

So begins a strange experience for Jazz, and the Copeland family.  Jazz has no idea how to cook, take care of children or any of the million other tasks Louisa seamlessly took care of.  Collin finds he has to make a way to start coming home earlier in the evenings to help Jazz with household tasks–a first for him.  Collin even finds himself thrust into watching his own children, something he has never done before either.

Shopping Woman Free UseJazz gets to work brightening up Louisa’s dull wardrobe of khaki, white and navy with bright colors and accessories.  She also livens up everyone’s lives, as well, since she is nothing like the very structured Louisa.  Jazz insists her parents were missionaries, and expects the formerly Christmas and Easter church attending Copeland’s, to be in church every Sunday.  Jazz turns everyone’s lives upside down, and in some ways, they would like her to stay forever.

Not all memories are good ones.

This might seem like a playful tale, and there are some funny situations.  However, an undercurrent of something dark runs beneath this light-hearted yarn.  The doctor suggests the reason Louisa has become Jazz is that it is a coping mechanism.  Something must have happened in Louisa’s life that was so traumatic she doesn’t want to remember it.  Until she does recall that event, Louisa will never know who she really is.Remember Sticky Note 2

The author does an excellent job of explaining the life-changing event that occurred in Louisa’s life when she was twelve–without going into graphic detail.  The word pictures she paints, really gives the reader a clear idea of what happened.  I appreciated that, along with the story being done from a Christian view-point.

The story-line really keeps your attention, wondering how will all turn out.  This is a great book that deals with some very dark, adult situations, which would be inappropriate for young readers.  I highly recommend this 5-star book to anyone who enjoys a good, solid story that has some fun parts, but also a strong dose of reality.

“When I Grow Up I Want To Be….a Veterinarian!”

Book Cover When I Grow Up I Want To Be....a Veterinarian

Is There a Doctor in the House?

This is the story of a little girl, Sofia, who loves animals.  It is also a book geared towards children that contains information about becoming a veterinarian.  Older elementary-aged children and above, will like this book, although some younger ones might enjoy having it read to them, as well.

Please…can we keep her?

Sofia has wanted a pet for a very long time, but her mother has always said no. Her mom doesn’t think Sofia or her brother, Diego, are ready for the responsibilities that come with having a pet.  Then one fateful night, during a storm, a stray cat wanders up to the family’s door.  After much pleading, Sofia’s dream comes true when her mother allows her to adopt it.Vet Dr. Examines Cat Wigu Press

Sofia’s dad suggests having the cat, Samantha, examined by a veterinarian.  As she examines Samantha, Dr. Helen explains what a veterinarian does, along with the types of animals that are seen.  Even technical facts are slipped into the story.

Which path to choose?

Readers learn there are two career paths that can be followed to become a veterinarian. Veterinarians with Horse Free Use - Copy One choice would be to specialize in the treatment of larger animals such as those found on a farm.  The other option would be to concentrate on smaller animals that are usually kept as pets.

This book does a couple of things.  First, it presents Veterinarians With Dog Free Use - Copyfactual material about becoming a veterinarian, and that information is given in such a way that it fits into the story-line.

Additionally, it teaches pet ownership.  I like that this book emphasizes the responsibilities such as feeding, grooming, and attention that come with having a pet. The author makes a good point about making sure the pet picked is not only wanted, but also a good match for your lifestyle.

What will I be when I grow up?

I think this is an easy way for children to learn about a career as a veterinarian in a story format.  Understanding the care and responsibility of pet ownership is an extra bonus.  At the end of the story, there is a list of qualities that make good veterinarians.  Some of them are loving animals, liking people, and being a good listener.  Thinking about those attributes can help a child decide if veterinary medicine is a career they would like to pursue. Vet Girl, Boy & Cat in Car Wigu Press

These fifty-four pages contain a lot of good information along with an enjoyable story, and lots of colorful illustrations.  This 5-star book joins the ranks of other good books that Wigu Publishing offers for children to explore a variety of different careers.

I’d like to thank the author for providing me with a complimentary copy of this book for the purpose of review. All opinions expressed are my own, and I was not required, or influenced, to give anything but an honest appraisal.

“Her Brother’s Keeper” by Beth Wiseman

Book Cover Her Brother's Keeper

“…There is a Friend Who Sticks Closer Than a Brother”

It has been a year since Ethan died, but his sister Charlotte Dolinsky is still devastated. Children Silouttes Blue Free Use She is sure that the Amish community that he had recently joined is responsible for some sort of cover-up.  Growing up in a dysfunctional family, Mary and Ethan were separated as older teens.  They were put in separate foster homes where they both were cruelly treated.  After becoming adults, they reconnected and were very close.  She has been suspicious ever since she found out her brother was joining the Amish faith, and is sure someone, possibly his Amish fiancée, Hannah King, drove him to his death.

Bridge Covered Free Use - CopyCharlotte decides to take things into her own hands, and investigate things herself.   By pretending to be Mary, a distant Amish cousin visiting the King family, she hopes to become a part of their community.  After briefly interviewing Amish women in her native Texas, and buying Amish dresses in a second-hand store, she believes she is ready to go to Pennsylvania.

Is it ever right to lie?

Mary has quite a culture shock when she comes to live with the close-knit Amish family.  She has no religious background, experience with a loving family, or homemaking talent.

Amish Farm with Buggy Free Use - Copy The King family is often perplexed by her lack of everyday skills and social blunders.  Mary tries to cover this by making up lies.  Those lies seem to get more involved by the minute, and Mary doesn’t know if she can keep them all straight.  She doesn’t know which will happen first, uncovering the truth about Ethan, or the discovery that she isn’t really the Amish woman she claims to be.

The longer Mary stays among the Amish, the more complicated her relationships with them becomes, especially with Hannah.  Mary is surprised by her change in feelings about the Amish in general, and the King family in particular.  Before this story ends, will Mary decide to become Amish herself?  Will Mary’s true identity be discovered, and will she then be shunned?  And will Mary really find out the truth about Ethan’s death?

How unexpected!

This is a very different story-line for an Amish book, and I really enjoyed it. Events turn out differently than Mary/Charlotte thought, including some unknown information about Ethan she discovers while investigating.  This story stands on its own, but it is easy to see how future books could explore story-lines further–and I look forward to that.  I highly recommend this 5-story book to fans of Amish books, as well as, fiction lovers of all types.Amish Buggy Free Use

“The Good, The Bad, and the Grace of God” by Jep & Jessica Robertson

Book Cover The Good, The Bad, and the Grace of God

The Youngest Ducks Quack!Duck Quacking

Jules Jeptha “Jep” Robertson and his wife, Jessica, share their life story in this book.  Jep is the youngest of four brothers who are part of the television show, Duck Dynasty.  As the baby in the family, Jep believes he got more attention from his dad, Phil, than his brothers.  That is because, by the time he came along, the family had begun stabilizing.  Part of that was due to starting their family business.  But the biggest reason for the better family life was due to changes his father had made.  After giving up a hard life of carousing and drinking, Phil was around his family a lot more.

Even though Jep has little, if any, memories of that dark time his father lived through, Phil has openly talked about it.  He emphasizes how hard that lifestyle was on him, and his family.  Becoming a follower of Christ was the only thing that gave him the strength to walk away from it.  He tells everyone to avoid living like that at all costs.

Does lightening strike twice?

Jep & Phil RobertsonUnfortunately, as a teenager, Jep began a life of hard drinking, doing drugs and living dangerously.  He continued going down that self-destructive path, believing he was keeping it secret from his family.  But he was wrong.  The Robertson’s knew what was going on, and his entire family decided to do an intervention.   They told  Jep they loved him, but gave him an ultimatum.  Give up drinking, drugs, and wild living and move back home with his parents.  Or permanently part company with his family, and live his life away from them, completely on his own.

Jep chose his family, and willingly abided by his parent’s rules.  He spent an intensive time with his dad and studying the Bible.  Like Phil, Jep credits the relationship he made with Christ during that time for turning his life around.

Life is harder than it looks on tv.

His wife, Jessica, shares her life before meeting Jep, including a bad relationship along with the self-destructive behavior she lived for a short time afterwards.  Jep almost let that knowledge destroy their relationship.

This book traces Jessica and Jep’s life together, including the difficult years trying to make ends meet while living in a little trailer with a small salary.  The two are very transparent about issues they have worked through, including the thing that almost broke their marriage apart–Jep’s use of pornography.Jep & Jessica Robertson - Copy

Recently, Jep experienced a life-threatening health crisis.  Jessica recounts how scary it was when the doctor’s weren’t sure what was causing his problems, so were unsure how to treat him. Once again, this close-knit family believes Jep’s recovery was due to God’s intervention.

I found it interesting to see a different side of this family than what is shown on television. Jep & Jessica Robertson Bowling - CopyThis fascinating 5-star book about the youngest couple in the Robertson clan will appeal to those who like true stories from a Christian viewpoint, or who are fans of the family’s television series.

Sometimes It’s OK to Sweat the Small Stuff, or Why I Cried When I Couldn’t Wear My Earrings

Heart Shapped Wood Pieces Free Use

“He will give you the desires of your heart….”

Many years ago, my first boyfriend invited me to senior prom.  Wanting it to be really special, I decided to get my ears pierced…

Wow!  That REALLY hurt!

I truly wanted to stop after the first ear, but made myself do the other one.  After it was done, the lady told me I would have to wait eight weeks before I took them out to wear different earrings.

The problem was, I didn’t have that much time before prom, which was the whole reason I got my ears pierced in the first place.  I had some great dangling earrings I had bought to wear for that special night.  “Surely,” I reasoned to myself, “I could do it a little earlier than eight weeks.” Earrings Blue Free Use

Everything went ok when I removed both of the “starter” earrings they had pierced my ears with.  The right earring went in perfectly.  When I tried the left one though, the trouble began.  No matter what I did, it wouldn’t go in–and it really hurt.

Here I was, completely ready in my new dress, sporting my first updo in my hair, but with only one earring in.  That other one, wouldn’t budge.  I couldn’t get the little starter earring to go back in either.  What to do?  Of course, ask mom!

Mom tried hard but didn’t have much more luck.  She even took me outside so she could get a better look at her progress.  Whatever she was doing was hurting quite a bit.  Then she told me, “lean over, and watch the bleeding so it doesn’t get on your dress.”

“….Um, what bleeding?!”

Basically my Mom re-pierced my left ear that night.  I don’t think my date noticed how pale I was when he came to pick me up.  We succeeded in keeping my formal dress blood free.  Prom was a success, too.   Although a few weeks later I woke up on the bathroom floor.  I had lost consciousness from a major infection that settled in that ear.

Down through the years, I was delighted to wear earrings, even though that left ear always had to be treated extra gently.  As time went on, that ear became so sensitive, I had to wear special earrings, but still, I had the pleasure of wearing them, and feeling fashionable.

Change is not always good.

Suddenly, chronic illness entered the life of my family, and slowly but surely, lots of things left us.  While the medical professionals practiced on us, our health continued to decline.  Debilitating allergies developed that caused us to never eat, or use products, without first thoroughly checking ingredients.  Serious pain became an unwelcome companion, as well as, a plethora of other problems.  We tried lots of solutions hoping to get better.  We didn’t find anything to cure us, but we did empty my husband’s retirement account in the process. Sign Caution Life's Difficulties Ahead

The things we had to face were hard.  We even moved hoping that would be the key to making us better.  As the years passed, I was constantly looking for answers to get well, to put this nightmare behind us, but I never got so worn down from it all that I cried.  I believed that God was in the midst of it with us, and He would eventually get us out.

Then came last summer.

We were finally able to make everything in our bathroom zero entry.  In order to do that, we had to empty all our possessions from our bedroom along with the bathroom, and move to the family room for a few months.  During that time, I was a few months into what would become almost a year of constant nausea, and other problems, brought on by a new medicine I was taking.  It was an ordeal.

At long last we returned to our bedroom, and slowly during the next few months my things trickled back in.  Even the constant nausea started to let up.  That is when I unpacked my earrings and decided to wear a pair.  But when I tried to put an earring in that left ear, it wouldn’t go at all.  When I looked at it closely, I saw the ear had grown closed.  Despite that, I tried to force it in my ear anyway, but only succeeded in making my ear bleed and very sore.  After all those years, my ears were no longer pierced.  And I cried, really cried–I wept buckets. Eye with Teardrop Free Use

I wasn’t expecting that…

Nothing else we had been through these past years, all the big things we had to give up, or hard things we lived through, hadn’t caused me to shed tears like that.  So why did the earrings bring on the tears?  I was a bit surprised by my feelings myself.

However when I thought about it, wearing pierced earrings was the last tie I had to a “normal” place in my life.  A time when I was healthy, young and carefree.  Years of chronic illness had stolen lots from us.  Health problems and allergies had made it impossible to use many important things.   Many small things were lost, too, like hair products, makeup and perfumes that I had once loved.  But I had still been able to put on a pair of earrings, and feel I still had a small piece of normal in my world.  Now that was gone, too.  With the health challenges I have, getting them re-pierced wasn’t practical or realistic.

Sometimes we women have certain touchstones in our lives, things that if we can hang onto them–even if the rest of our world is crumbling around us–help us to stay centered and feel normal.  For me, one of those things was wearing earrings.  When I couldn’t do it anymore, something broke deep inside my heart, and it caused me to weep from my very soul.

For the next few days, I remained sad about the earring problem.  I cried out to God about it, too.  The words from the Psalms came to me, “take delight in the LORD, and He will give you the desires of your heart.”  With those words, along with other promises from the Bible swirling around in my head, I asked God to give me my pierced ears back–and I really expected Him to do it.

I had never done anything like that before, but I felt a peace in my heart about it. I also had the thought to give it a couple of weeks, and try it again.  I spent that time praying and thanking God for helping me.  About two weeks later, I tried putting those earrings in again.  And they went in!  My pierced ears were back.  Some may not believe in healing, or that miracles are for today, but I always have.  After this, I believe it even more.

We still have daily struggles, health problems and pain.  But I also have earrings back in my ears.  It is a reminder that God is in the little things and the big.  My faith has been greatly strengthened by this.  It gives me tangible proof that He cared when I was hurting, even if it was a small thing.  The Lord choose to delight me deeply by bringing back my ability to wear pierced earrings.  And it gives me the faith to believe that we will beat all the rest of our challenges, too–by the Grace of God.
