“The Tales of a Wandering Prophet” by Hubie Synn

When God Knocks….Man at Desk Free Use

This is the true story of a self-described ordinary man who has had some amazing experiences with God.  Hubie Synn considers himself to be “just” an accountant, a husband and a father.  However, he is also a man who has turned his life, and it’s direction, over to God.  And by doing that, this ordinary man has experienced the extraordinary.

Following God has resulted in Hubie rubbing shoulders with many well-known people in both public and Christian circles.  Many times, he would rather not have done what God was urging him to do.  In fact, he has often asked the Lord to send someone else.  But in the end, Hubie has been obedient and done what he was asked.

When you give God an open door….

God has given him special messages to give to people.  Rarely does he know ahead of time who he will speak with, often it is someone he has never met.  Out of the blue, Hubie will get a nudge from the Almighty to speak with a certain person.  When he gives them their message, he isn’t aware of much, if any, of what comes out of his mouth.  Jonathan Cahn, the well-known author of both The Harbinger and The Mystery of the Shemitah was one of the people Hubie was led to speak to.  The words spoken by Hubie to Roller Coaster Free Use 2Jonathan had a profound effect on the path The Harbiner took.

Hubie tells his life story both, before and after, he became a follower of Christ.  He traces the roller coaster ride his life has taken since stepping out in faith, and giving control of his destiny to God.  He openly shares that some of the low points he’s had have been because of other Christians.

Keep the faith.Don't Give Up

He states one should not lose faith if other people fail us.  Instead, keep believing God, read the Bible, and pray for guidance.  Make sure you listen to God’s voice, and what He puts in your heart.  He cautions that one should be very thoughtful about whom they take counsel from.  Be careful if others tell you God has told them what direction you are to follow.  As it says in 1 John 4:1:

“…do not believe everyone who claims to speak by the Spirit. You must test them to see if the spirit they have comes from God. For there are many false prophets in the world.”

This is an interesting account of a contemporary man who has opened himself, along with the control of his life, to the Lord’s leading.  The result has been an amazing adventure with many blessings.  After reading this, I have found myself wondering about additional ways I can be available for God’s will to be done in my life.  This 5-star book will appeal to anyone who likes true stories, or would like God to be a bigger part of their own life.

“A Love Like Ours” by Becky Wade

Can You Go Back Home Again?

Twenty years ago Jake and Lyndie were best friends living in Texas.  Lyndie loved horses, Children Silhouettes Playing in Water - Copywas a dreamer with a huge imagination and very impetuous.  Jake, Lyndie’s self-appointed guardian, had a heart of gold who followed her everywhere and kept her safe.  Suddenly their idyllic childhood was torn apart when Lyndie’s family moved to California.

Now, two decades later, Jake and Lyndie are reunited.  Lyndie has become an author, a published writer and an expert horsewoman.  She is also a woman with a strong Christian faith.  Jake, on the other hand, has become dark, brooding and is suffering from Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).  He wants nothing to do with God or people.

Slowly, a relationship forms because of Lyndie’s perseverance, but Jake does everything he can to sabotage them.  This story describes some very intense and dark situations that Jake has experienced, and that continue to haunt him.  The seriousness of PTSD is not sugar coated.

Everybody needs a friend…

Girls Splashing Each Other on Beach Free Use - CopyLyndie’s friendship with Amber provides some hilarious situations.  Amber, a single mom, has a story that many will be able to relate to.  Especially her vow, since becoming a Christian, to put her love-life into God’s hands–even if that means never having another man in her life.

Will Jake’s dogged determination for self-destruction destroy both Lyndie and his life?   Or will Lyndie compromise her faith and values to have a love relationship with Jake?  Does  Mollie, Lyndie’s severely disabled sister, truly have healing powers, or is this another one of Lyndie’s fantasizes?

Count the cost, some relationships are harder than others.

Sign Choose WiselyThis is an uncommon romance because it includes the serious situation of PTSD.  I applaud the author for addressing it, along with some of the possible consequences that could come from it.  A couple of cautions about some of the subject matter:   first, each person struggling with PTSD is unique, and a romance will not necessarily turn out well, or the way this story does.   Also, Christians are playing a dangerous game when they become romantically involved with a non-believer.  More often than not, there is a lot of heartache when that happens in real-life.

A Love Like Ours is part of a series, but can be read as a stand-alone tale.  I read it without reading the others, and it did not keep me from enjoying this one.  Although I now want to get the rest of the series after reading it.  This 5-star book will appeal to people who like horses, tales of people attempting to overcome big obstacles, and those who enjoy Christian fiction.

The publisher has provided me with a complimentary copy of this book through Bethany House Publishing for the purpose of review.   I have not been compensated in any other manner.  All opinions expressed are my own, and I was not required, or influenced, to give anything but an honest appraisal.

“The Wonder of You” by Susan May Warren

What Do You Do After You’ve Blown It?

Did you ever mess up your life so much you felt nothing could be done but retreat?  Have you ever been so fearful of failing that you were paralyzed from trying again?  That is the way the main character in this book, Amelia Christiansen, feels. Heart in Sand

After falling in love with handsome European, Roark St. John, while attending photography school in Prague, she is devastated to see him in the arms of another woman.  She flees Europe to return home to the small Minnesota town of Deep Haven, where her close-knit family has owned and run a lodge for generations.

To stay or not to stay, that is the question.

Amelia wants to convince herself she should be happy with this predictable, safe life she has returned to.  However, her dream has always been to explore the world, and capture it with her camera.  Additionally, her old flame from high school, Seth, is pressuring her to marry him.

Unexpectedly, Roark arrives in Deep Haven, determined to win her back despite the Tuxedo Mananimosity he gets from Seth, the Christiansen family, and even Amelia.  Roark, dubbed 007 by the townspeople because of his cool British accent and suave good looks, brings with him a trunk full of secrets.

If Seth uncovers that information, will he expose Roark?  Will that be enough to keep Amelia in Deep Haven, and get her to marry him?  Or will Roark win her hand instead?  Perhaps Amelia will say goodbye to both men, along with her hometown, and set out for adventures one more time.  Before this story is finished, there is heartbreak, misunderstanding, discovery of a dead body, and the possibility that one of the Christiansen siblings might not survive.

You don’t have to read all the books to enjoy this one.Boy Sitting on Books

This is book five in the Christiansen Family Series.  Even though there are characters and story-lines from other books in The Wonder of You, it isn’t hard to get up to speed when reading this one–and this book can definitely stand on its own.

The author also weaves in the tale of another Christiansen sibling, Grace, and her fiancé, Max.  Their story explores the subjects of hereditary illness, the question of marriage under those circumstances, and adoption.

You mean this place doesn’t really exist?Minnesota Free Use

The author does a wonderful job of fleshing out the characters along with the community of Deep Haven.  You will feel like you are reading about Sad Dog Faceactual people in a real place–and wish it truly did exist.  All of this is written from a Christian point of view.  I highly recommend this 5-star story to anyone who enjoys well-written, clean fiction.

“Now and Forever” by Mary Connealy

Book Cover Now and Forever

That First Step’s a Doozy!

Now & Forever is the second book in the Wild at Heart Series, with a story that can stand alone.  This is the tale of Shannon Wilde, homesteading in the Idaho Territory of 1866.  She is one of three sisters, all of whom were bullied by their father into disguising themselves as men, and serving in the Civil War. Bear Attack

The action in this story starts right on the first page. Shannon, out for a hike in the woods, comes face to face with Mountain Man, Matthew Tucker–and a mad grizzly bear right behind him.  Since they are on the edge of a cliff, Shannon sees their only chance for survival is jumping into the river below.  Unknown to Shannon, that is the Slaughter River, so named because no one has ever gone in it and survived.

Have you ever questioned your faith?Praying Blue 2

Although this book contains Ms. Connealy’s trade mark humor, it also has some very somber sections that deal with the post traumatic stress that Shannon suffers from the war.  She worked as a medic on the front lines of combat and witnessed, as well as, took part in, many grizzly medical procedures.  The horrors of that experience, have caused Shannon to have a crisis of faith, and question God.

Will she hang in there…and survive?

Lamb Close UpIn addition to facing those demons, Shannon is also facing another type of evil that wants to force her off her land, and destroy her beloved sheep.  Shannon, Matthew and the rest of her family face many dangers while trying to figure out who is behind all of it.  Some of those scenes were so intense that it made the hair on the back of my neck stand up.  Ms. Connealy packs a lot of action between the pages of this book.  She has well-developed characters living out an adventurous story with lots of twists and turns.

I have read other works by this author, and was thrilled to have the opportunity to read and review this one.  I recommend this 5-star book to anyone who enjoys a well-written book with action, romance, and a dash of humor, written from a Christian viewpoint.

Well, Howdy Ma’am!Reportor News - Copy

Maggie Hope is doing a television interview–her first, and she is scared spitless.  The subject matter is Tru Monahan, a famous rodeo winner who hates reporters.   So begins the story of a handsome cowboy who meets a beautiful, but klutzy, writer.  And Cowboy Boot and Hatall of this takes place in the charming, small town of Wishing Springs, Texas.

I betcha you can’t…I betcha I can!

Not your ordinary romance.

So far, this might sound like just another romance story.  But that would be a wrong assumption.  There is romance in this book, but there is also a whole lot more.  The characters have real depth, and serious issues in the storyline include child neglect, teenage runaways, unwed mothers, male sterility, and Alzheimer’s disease–along with its affect on families.

How about a good laugh?

The author does a great job of breaking up the serious subjects with fun, humor and zanyCowboy on Horse characters and circumstances that pepper the pages of this delightful tale.  This is book one in A Four of Hearts Ranch Romance Series, and I look forward to the rest of them.

Will Tru and Maggie decide it is too hard to work with each Date Sillyother, and give up, despite what they will each lose?  Can Maggie find out who the blackmailer is?  And will the wacky townspeople be able to help kindle a romance between Tru and Maggie, or drive them further apart?  What will become of the runaway, and the baby she is soon to give birth to?  Find out all this and more in the pages of Betting on Hope.

This five-star book will leave a smile on your face, and a warm spot in your heart.  It will do all that without offensive language or adult situations, and is written from a Christian point of view.  I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys a good story.Cowboy Bandana

“After a Fashion” by Jen Turano

Book Cover After a Fashion

Happy Birthday?

Harriet Peabody has made it a practice to say a special Praying Hands Outline in Colorprayer to God on her birthday.  This year, instead of asking for something specific, she left the choice completely up to Fired Signthe Almighty.  She just asks Him to give her something she would find wonderful.

At first, it seems God has done the opposite, because her life starts to fall apart–and it all begins on her birthday.  She is assaulted by a bratty member of high society, and then loses her job because of it.  Even though it wasn’t a very good job, it provided enough money to pay her portion of the rent for the shabby apartment she shares with her two friends, Lucetta and Millie .

An offer you can’t refuse.

Next, she becomes acquainted with the rich, handsome and completely frustrating Oliver Gold Pot of GoldAddleshaw.  He wants to hire her to pretend, for a short time, to be his fiancée.  Her job would be to help him host business dinners along with society functions.  He offers her more money than she could make in years.  She thinks he must be quite mad.

Of course, an offer like this opens up all types of ways for things to go Harriet's Store 3wrong–along with a lot of ways for things to go right, too.  We are introduced to Oliver’s charming grandfather, Archibald; her gentle and caring Pastor, Reverend Gilmore; along with the snobby high society of New York City in 1882.   Also revealed is Harriet’s dream of designing a new type of dress bustle, as well as, opening a dress shop where she creates fashionable, affordable gowns for women of modest means.Diamond Ring

After the “engagement” takes place, strong-willed Mrs. Abigail Hart, a rich widow, declares herself Harriet’s chaperone.  She demands that Harriet, along with her friends Lucetta and Millie, move in with her immediately.  Harriet’s estranged Aunt Jane, who is constantly running confidence schemes, also makes an appearance.  She attempts to blackmail Harriet into introducing her into high society so she can pull off a really big caper.

Now for something you’ll really like….Horse White Picture - Copy

What can be the result when all these diverse characters and their stories are mixed
together?  An absolutely great tale!  I haven’t read a book I liked this much in a long time, and give this story six stars instead of the normal limit of five.

This is a well written work with lots of interesting characters and a great story-line.  Actually, it is a screwball comedy in book form, with a completely satisfying and happy ending.  I highly recommend it to anyone who would like an escape, at least for a while,  to a world made up of fascinating people living out a great story–with some laughs thrown in along the way.Happy Masks Theatre

“Wilderness Rising” by A.L. Shields

Book Cover Wilderness Rising

Oh, What a Wicked Web They Weave!

Wilderness Rising is an action packed unpredictable thriller.  It picks up where the first Searching with Flashlight - Copybook, The Church Builder, stopped with the main character, Bethany Barclay, finding herself in England.  She is attempting to piece together the mystery that has resulted in the death of her best friend, Annabelle.  It also catapulted her from her small town law practice to a worldwide run for her life–while she tries to solve this mystery before she becomes the next victim.

Along her journey she met a brilliant teenage girl, Janice, who insisted on coming with her.  That decision resulted in Janice being kidnapped.  Her kidnappers are demanding that Bethany find an ancient artifact called the Pilate Stone, and turn it over to them in order to save Janice’s life.

It all comes down to good versus evil.Sign Good or Evil

As Bethany works to solve Annabelle’s murder and save Janice, she discovers that the people behind all this is a powerful, centuries-old, secret group known as The Wilderness.  Their main focus has been to discredit Christianity, and to ultimately get rid of it entirely. Members of The Wilderness includes some of the most powerful people in the world.  They have been able to control the media, dictate the moves of important politicians and get laws passed to further their cause.   Many of their evil deeds have been thwarted through the centuries by another equally secret group called The Garden.

Catch her if you can!

But all Bethany knows is that she is running for her life.  Her character has been Running Girl - Copycompletely destroyed, and she has been falsely accused of things she has had nothing to do with.  Bethany has had to take on a new identity, and does not know who to trust.  Just when she seems to find one answer, she uncovers something else that reveals she is involved in a web of evil that has far reaching consequences.  In the mean time, The Garden and The Wilderness both seem to be losing control and experiencing members who are selling them out, or secretly working for the other side.

How will this ancient battle end?

Question Mark GreenThis is a fascinating story that will draw you in immediately.   Will Bethany be able to clear her name, as well as, free Janice?  Will The Wilderness succeed this time, and destroy Christianity?  Or will The Garden be strong enough to stop The Wilderness?  This is a real page turner that will keep you on the edge of your seat.  I never knew where this tale was going to go next, and liked that I couldn’t easily figure out how it would end.

Wilderness Rising is the second book in a series, and I feel the first book, The Church Builder, really needs to be read first to enjoy this one.  In fact, I stopped reading Wilderness Rising, got The Church Builder, read it, and then read this one afterward.  I enjoyed this 5-star book very much, and recommend it to anyone who enjoys thrillers and mysteries, or well-written Christian fiction.   You can find more books written by this author under the name Stephen Carter.

“Double Cross” by DiAnn Mills

Book Cover Double Cross

Going Undercover with the FBI!

Morton Wilmington, former crime boss, has become a Born Again Lambborn again Christian while serving a jail sentence.  Or so he claims.  He contacts the government about doing an undercover operation to expose his former partners in crime.  He states he is doing this because of his new-found religious beliefs.

A change of heart?

I love you - CopyTo help him pull off this plan, he requests the help of FBI agent Laurel Evertson.  She was the agent responsible for putting him in jail in the first place.  Laurel had pretended to be in love with Morton so she could get close enough to him to get evidence to convict him.   Although this was just an act for Laurel, Morton really had fallen in love with her.

Morton, with the help of the FBI, concocts an elaborate hoax which includes Laurel FBI Badgereprising the role of his fiancé, and convincing  the crime world that she has walked away from her FBI position out of love for him.  Atheist Laurel, in fact, detests Morton, doubts his religious conversion or his sincerity to really rat out his former crime buddies.  But she agrees to be part of the plan in order to stop a crime ring that has been scamming the elderly, and perhaps catch Morton doing something illegal once more.

Police CarPoliceman Daniel Hilton inadvertently becomes involved in the sting operation when his grandparents who raised him become victims of the scam.  Although Laurel isn’t thrilled to have him included, he works his way into the investigation.  His spunky, out-spoken Christian grandmother and Alzheimer suffering grandfather are also part of the story-line.

A double double-cross?

This book has lots of twists and turns along with many likable characters.  Laurel and Daniel often wonder whether or not Morton truly has turned his back on crime, and if they can trust him when situations get dangerous.  When things start getting really harrowing they begin to speculate if their FBI connection is really looking out for them.Detective Cartoon Image

Will Laurel and Daniel be able to work with Morton without losing their lives?  Has Morton really turned over a new leaf, or is he just using them to pull off an even bigger heist, and disappear–incriminating them in the bargain?  And will Daniel’s grandparents suffer a fatal “accident” the way other senior citizens have who have been part of the scam?  Find the answer to all these questions and more in this page turning tale.

I enjoyed this book which is the second in a series, but this story stands alone.  I was disappointed that one of the main characters is eliminated so won’t be part of the series going forward.   This 5-star book has a strong Christian message that was easily woven into this work.  I recommend this to anyone who enjoys fast moving thrillers with a dash of romance that is all kept squeaky clean.

“When I Grow Up I Want To Be….in the U. S. Army”

Book Cover When I Grow Up I Want To Be....in the U. S. Army

You’re in the Army Now!Army Soldier Cartoon

Army BaseThis book is geared towards elementary school students, and tells about a career in the U. S. Army.  The story-line centers on a school assignment a boy named Jake has.  Each student has to give an oral report about what he would like to be when he grows up, what career he would like to pursue.

Don’t know what to do?  Talk with others!Man Talking

Jake has no idea what he wants to do, so that evening talks with his Dad.  His Father reminds him he was in the army.  That causes Jake to consider joining the Army.

Army AirplanesDuring a trip to an Army surplus store, Army ParachutesJake’s Dad explains the variety of careers that are available in the Army.  From this discussion Jake learns what the different ranks are, what many of the insignia and medals stand for, along with the importance the military is to our country.

Wouldn’t a book filled with facts be boring?

Army HorseThis book had lots of information that would be perfect for school aged children to read, yet it was not overwhelming.  The great pictures on every page illustrate and add a lot to the narrative.  All the data was creatively added as part of a story-line that followed Jake working on a school assignment.  That made the volume more like a story instead of a book with a bunch of dry facts.

For boys only?Army Woman Selfie

Although this story followed a boy, girls would enjoy this book, too.  In fact there was a side story about a classmate of Jake’s named Hannah.   She had a surprise career choice that was revealed in the end.

I found this 5-star book very interesting and learned things myself–including what GI stands for.  You can find the answer to that question, along with many other fascinating facts, in this volume.   This narrative would be a great resource for students working on an assignment about careers, as well as, a very informative work for anyone who wants to learn about the U. S. Army.Army Eagle

The goal of this book’s publishing company, Wigu Publishing, is that their books will be:  “both educational and fun, our stories are told through the eyes of young boys and girls, and will inspire them to reach their full potential and become contributing citizens of this great country!”  That goal has certainly been met with this book, and I recommend it.Army Child with Flags

“I’m a Different Type of Apple” by Kevin D. Elliott, SR.

perf5.000x8.000.indd

Does the Apple Fall Far From the Tree?

Apple on Tree 2 - CopyThis is the true story of a man who had many things in life stacked against him.  He was raised in a single parent household after his father was incarcerated.  His family was poor, and many times knew what it was like to be hungry.  When Kevin was just eleven years old, he was shocked to discover his school principle believed he would kill somebody someday.  That prediction changed the course of the author’s life.

That’s just how it is…..or is it?

Up until that point, it might not have been surprising the principal would have a low opinion of the author.  His father was a bad influence who taught him to fight and gave him beer when he was just four years old.  Kevin was so much like his father, that it seemed a given that he would come to a bad end as well.  But despite his young age, Kevin decided to start making some very concrete steps to go a different direction in his life.Change

One of the changes he made was to give up cursing.  It took awhile, but he made a game of it, and was able to stop.  He also decided that he liked it when people had good expectations about him instead of negative ones.  For instance, one of his acquaintances made it clear that he believed Kevin would never smoke.  Because of that positive statement, Kevin did not give in to peer pressure to become a smoker.

Can a leopard change its spots?

Leopard

Changing wasn’t always easy.  Overcoming his volatile temper was difficult and something Forgiveness Handhe struggled with.  He states that even when he was older there were times he wanted to resort to violence.  He longed to seek revenge on his grandmother’s abusive ex-husband when he unexpectedly encountered him later in life.  Even though his flames of rage were reignited, Kevin was able to leave him alone.  In fact, he forgave that man.

House with HeartHis concrete decision to alter his fate have had a ripple effect on his life, along with his family’s lives.  He has reaped the rewards of changing his life by having a stable home and marriage along with two children.  He has stayed in his chosen career for over 30 years.  He was blessed by people who were good influences in his life.  And those things helped.  But ultimately it was the conscious decision he made to change that brought a different path for his life.

This story of victory, uplifting success and overcoming should be required reading in all Card Stack Lifehigh schools, especially those that are considered “at risk.”  Mr. Elliott demonstrates that no matter how the cards of life might be stacked against someone, it is always possible to change your path of life.

This short 5-star book would be interesting for anyone who enjoys true stories along with those who work with kids.  It would also be great for anyone  who thinks their life is over, and there aren’t any other options.  The die is not cast for the fate of someone’s life by circumstances alone.  What one believes and strives for is the ultimate determiner of your life’s path.  Die Blue
