“The Edge of Everywhen” by A. S. Mackey

The Adventure Begins!

Piper and her little brother, Phoenix, have lost both parents and are sent to stay with their Aunt Beryl, whom they have never met. Not only is their aunt unusual, she holds them at arm’s length emotionally, lives in a big mansion and has a list of rules that must always be followed, no matter what.

Since Phoenix has autism and doesn’t speak, Piper has always looked after his special needs. Will her aunt trust Piper enough to listen to her?

During all these changes, Piper begins to feel a book is calling to her from Aunt Beryl’s forbidden library. Mystery and lots of questions start cropping up. Can a book read differently, depending on who looks at it, and how can it signal to someone? Why does Aunt Beryl dislike them, what really happened to their father, and is Phoenix beginning to talk? Most of all, does God care about them?

Young reader’s imaginations will be pulled in by all the unanswered questions, intrigue and adventure this tale packs in. Despite the somber tone the aunt sets, the caring butler and cook offer bright spots and fun for the children. This faith-based modern story is in the same vein as the beloved Nancy Drew or The Hardy Boys books. I highly recommend this 5-star book to youngsters through 10th grade.

Grab this Life Preserver!

Worried, uneasy and fearful? This book will give you some ways to cope and feel better. The difference between just surviving and actually thriving during a time of crisis is what is going through your mind. The author gives lots of ways to make your mind hopeful. Renew your faith in God, examine the promises He has made, and claim them for your own. Do not give in to negative thinking and worrying. Put your trust in God.

Remember to take care of yourself physically, getting good sleep and eating correctly. You do not want your health to suffer during hard times. Music can also bring you into a calm place. Hum songs, play praise music, let your spirit soar with these things, and you will find yourself with a more positive outlook.

Lots more suggestions are in this book along with more in-depth information about how to use the ones I have named. Considering all that is going on in our world, this is the perfect time for a book like this.

Currently, our family is weathering a crisis of epic proportion. Earlier this year, our family suffered two devastating hits, one of which was a financial one that drained us. While reeling from those things, my husband lost his job of many years, with no severance package. We are on expensive medication we don’t know how we will continue. Despite everything going on, I can honestly say this 5-star book has given me hope, and believe it will help anyone crushed by the burdens of life.

“A Mosaic of Wings” by Kimberly Duffy

Against the Grain!

Nora is the valedictorian of her college class, and wants to be a scientist, just the way her dad raised her.  Unfortunately, it is 1885, and the world believes women should strive to be wives and mothers only.  Her father has been replaced by a step-father who wholeheartedly agrees with that sentiment and fights Nora every step of the way.

In an attempt to win a scholarship, she goes to India.  Unfortunately, Frederic, the man in charge also thinks women are useless.  He hardly lets her participate in what she came to do, and she inadvertently causes horrible trouble for Frederic multiple times.

But India also gives Nora the chance to see schoolmate Owen differently, revel in the beauty of a foreign land, and change a little girl’s life—at a great cost to her. I sympathized with Nora about her stepfather’s dishonesty, but I never did like her study of bugs and it took me a while to warm up to her.  Owen is a gem with his character and reliance on God.  India and the story will charm and captivate you. I recommend this 4-star book to those who like tales in exotic or historical settings with a bit of romance.

Air Fryer Method

Add as many as you can to the air fryer basket without stacking the egg rolls, making sure they don’t touch. Air needs to circulate around them. Brush the egg rolls lightly with oil.

“Shifting Shadows” by Herman Mendoza

Losing Everything & Getting More!

Herman lived life in the fast lane with lots of mistresses, property, alcohol and parties, while running a lucrative business as a top drug lord.  Even though he lived like a king with everything money could buy, his life on the inside was a mess.

Then he was taken to jail, more than once. Everything was gone, things were hopeless, and he was ready to commit suicide.

While incarcerated, he met Jesus Christ and everything changed.  Miraculously, he found peace for the first time in his life, even while living in prison.

Against all odds, he was released from jail.  Instead of divorcing him, his wife became a Christian, and his family was restored.  He became a pastor and began serving God.  For years, he has helped people in dangerous areas of our country and throughout the world, telling them about Jesus while doing it.

This exciting, true story will captivate you, and you will not be able to put it down.  I recommend this 5-star story to anyone who enjoys books about people who experience life-changing events after becoming a follower of Christ.

“Where is Wisdom?” by Scott James

Here’s Wisdom!

This children’s book is based on Job 28, which can be hard for young ones to understand.  The author does a good job explaining a challenging subject by using simple words and vibrant illustrations.

Treasures can be found by digging into the earth, getting things out of the ocean or hunting through jungles. But where is wisdom, can it be found that way?  Can it be purchased?Wisdom comes from God.  Pay attention to the world and all the wonderful things in it that God has made for us.   Give your love, understanding and respect to Him, and you will learn wisdom.  In that way, you will find God is pointing to the greatest treasure of all, Jesus.

“The fear of the Lord—that is wisdom,
and to shun evil is understanding.”– Job 28:28

I recommend this 5-star book for grades two through fifth.

“The fear of the Lord—

To know God truly,

To be amazed by His greatness,

To want nothing more than to love and live for Him—

That is where wisdom is found.”

Book Review “Dead Silence” by Robin Caroll

What Would You do to Protect Your Family?

Elise, a widow, just read the lips of a man saying her mother-in-law, a senator, would be murdered!  But before she can act on that, she is swept away by the news her deaf son, Sawyer, has been injured and is in the hospital.  After the trauma of dealing with his injury and getting him home, she falls asleep before remembering to report the threat to her mother-in-law.

She is horrified the next morning to find that her mother-in-law has been killed.   Elise tells all the details to FBI agents, only to find she and Sawyer’s lives are now being threatened.  As more and more attempts are made to hurt them, Elise decides to take things in her own hands and try to solve the murder herself.

After that, her life really changes as she gets in even more dangerous situations.  Should she have tried to investigate herself?  What else can she do?

This tale is exciting and some of the characters rely on God to help them cope with threatening things, while others express their doubt of His care. Including a deaf child in the story brings some understanding of a few of the special issues that would be present in real life.  You will enjoy this 5-star book, and I recommend it to those who like thrillers or whodunits.

“Standoff” by Patricia Bradley

Running for Her Life!

In just a few days, Brooke’s father has died, she has been shot at and run off the road.  She surprised a burglar who then beat her up, and she has been in an explosion.  Luke, literally the boy next door, has come back into her life acting like everything should be the same between them.  This is despite the fact he has been gone for over a decade.

What is going on?  How could her father be accused of suicide, why is someone trying to kill her, and will she figure it out before it is too late?

From the first page, this story hits the ground running with lots of action and characters.  There are undercover agents, a sting operation, and the most dangerous person of them all is someone she knows well, but she hasn’t quite figured out who.

The author kept me guessing the identity of the guilty party, up until the end, I did not solve it.  This clean story, written from a Christian point of view, will keep you on your toes while you enjoy well developed characters and an entertaining story.  I recommend this 5-star book to those who enjoy mysteries and thrillers with a touch of romance.
