“A Foundation of Fear” by Kim McMahill

A Killer Diet!

As a successful diet program collapses from the use of a dangerous food ingredient, FBI agents try to uncover if this problem was known ahead of time.  The story includes a variety of people, some who truly are innocent while others are killers, schemers and those willing to make money no matter what.  FBI agent, Devyn Nash, tries to sort through them all, while keeping herself alive along with her partner and best friend.  Lots of action, settings, and story-lines blend together to bring this tale to an exciting conclusion.

This is the third book in the series, Risky Research.  Because of that, the reader will face a large cast of characters, situations and continued story threads from earlier installments.  Despite that, it is a good story, and you will wonder who is going to win the struggle in the end.  A Foundation of Fear is a clean tale with a sprinkling of romance that can be enjoyed by all, although beer and alcohol is used in the yarn.  This 5-star book will be appreciated by those who like suspense, fast-moving action, thrills or well-written fiction.

“Black Beauty” by Anna Sewell

Trot a mile in my shoes!

What does the world look like through the eye of a horse?  This classic story will tell you all that and more.  Black Beauty relates his tale from the time he is young living in a meadow with his mom, to the time he is a much older horse, and alone.  During that time, Beauty faces all kinds of situations from the very best to the worse along with many things in between.

Horse lovers, of course, will adore this story, however anyone will enjoy this book.  From the first page, you will be drawn into Beauty’s saga and wonder how he will face the different situations he finds himself in.  No matter what life throws his way, Beauty remains undiscouraged. Even the cruel things he faces do not cause him to become bitter or to dislike humans.

This rendition of the book is beautiful, substantial and has a nice hard-backed cover.  High quality paper is used for the pages along with lovely color illustrations generously sprinkled throughout the volume–making this a great gift for others, or yourself.

The story itself is timeless.  Love of animals and fair treatment are understood as well today as they were when it was first published.  This work was the lifetime achievement of the author, an invalid who relied on horses to carry her.  Because of that, she developed a love for them, and became a champion for equine fair treatment. Teens through adults will enjoy this 5-star book, as well as, younger children, although it would need to be read to them.  I recommend it.

“Good News! It’s Christmas!” by Glenys Nellist

(Our Daily Bread for Kids Presents)

Illustrated by Lizzie Walkley

Little Town of Bethlehem…..

This sweet book tells the Christmas story in picture and verse that is simple enough for little ones to understand, without losing any of the wonderful meaning of Jesus’ birth.  Each double page proclaims something that is good news.  For example:

GOOD NEWS!

Coo the pigeons,

“we’ll make room in here.

And when you have your baby,

we’ll coo and flap and cheer!”

The lovely illustrations and attractive colors throughout the story with draw children’s eyes, while the verses containing the good news will grab their attention and delight their ears.  This is a larger sized board-book that measures 7” by 7”, and is well-made to hold up to the work-out little hands will give it.

This volume is based on the Biblical Christmas story, especially Luke 2:10-11.  It is a delightful way to introduce and welcome the Christmas story to small ones.  As December 25th quickly approaches, this is a good time to get this 5-star book, although children will enjoy this story year-round.  Its economical price makes this lovely book a great gift–I highly recommend it!

Robin Clayton, doesn’t know which way to turn.  Her husband, Mark, a police detective, has been shot and lies in a coma.

What was he doing with the college girl who was found killed at the scene with him, and why was a lot of cash found on Mark?  Why didn’t he report the meeting he was having with the girl?  Internal Affairs is building a case to blame Mark, claiming he was on the take with drug dealers.  But is there more than meets the eye?

Other than one friend, Robin feels everyone in the Police Department is against Mark.  When she starts getting threats, Robin is spurred on to clear him herself.  While, trying to figure out who is responsible, Robin may have gotten in so far over her head that she will not survive.

This exciting thriller has a good story-line that does a great job keeping you guessing who is guilty.  The author knits together the different leads into a satisfying end.  Faith is part of the tale, including those who reject it, and those who want to rely on it.  I recommend this 5-star book to anyone who enjoys well-written clean, suspense.

Julie’s mom reluctantly admits she and her daughter changed their names and have been living in hiding for years.  They were terrified of her abusive ex-husband, Stuart.  When Terrence tracks him down, he finds Stuart has made a new life for himself, with a wife who believes he is wonderful.  Coincidentally, he is on a trip to a remote area that makes finding or communicating with him, difficult.

Is Stuart the one responsible for taking Julie?  Or could it be someone else?  Terrence does lots of investigating to find Julie, but nothing turns up—has she left on her own, or is something more sinister involved?

“The Little Snowplow Wishes for Snow” by Lora Koehler

Illustrated by Jake Parker

Waiting…and Hoping…..

Ever want something so much, that you wait and wait hoping it will come—but after a long time, it doesn’t happen?  That is the place the little snowplow is at.  He’s happy and likes helping the other machines, but what he really loves is snow.

As the beginning of March approaches, his birthday, and still there is no snow, the little snowplow gives up on his dream, and glumly organizes his party instead.  However, on the day of his birthday, he is surprised by an unexpected gift.

This hardbacked book contains over-sized pages full of illustrations sure to be loved by children.  Kids will adore hearing about the other machines trying to cheer up the little snowplow by playing ice snowkey-pokey.  They will also be excited by the gift the little snowplow gets, and the joy he feels along with the fun he has with it.

Underlying this fun story with cute pictures is a message that there are times when we don’t always get what we want right away.  Sometimes we have to bide our time.  But after waiting, just like the little snowplow, unexpectedly getting our wish can make the gift that much better.  I highly recommend this well-written and illustrated 5-star story for all children who like the unexpected!

“Hope’s Highest Mountain” by Misty M. Beller

Climbing Every Mountain!

In 1866, Ingrid Chastain and her dad, are on a quest to take smallpox vaccine to the Montana Territory.   An epidemic has broken out and the Chastains will not let bad weather, mountains, or Western inexperience stop them.  Unfortunately, a horrible accident in a steep mountain pass leaves Ingrid the only survivor–with serious injuries, and little chance to live.

However, a rough mountain man, Micah Bradley, discovers her and uses all his strength to drag her to his camp.  Despite the danger to her health, Ingrid begs Micah to take the vaccine on to save lives, and justify her father’s death.

Can Ingrid convince Micah to make a trip that will take weeks of walking through the snow-covered mountains?  Since Ingrid can’t be left alone, how could he bring her with him?  Could Ingrid survive a trip like that since she is already in tremendous pain? Micah has demons of his own that drove him away, will he leave the mountains to help?

The fascinating characters of Micah and Ingrid immediately draw you into their stories, and keep the pages turning.  This clean tale has lots of excitement and adventure.  Despite Micah not believing her, Ingrid credit’s God with giving her strength.  I highly recommend this 5-star book to all who enjoy well-written tales of the old west with romantic fireworks on the side.
