Not Your Ordinary Coffee Shop

This is a short, light story that covers some heavy topics–marital infidelity, an unplanned pregnancy followed by a rushed marriage along with unforgiveness towards spouses and parents.   It also contains humor, including some eccentric characters and a very clumsy angel who comes to earth in human form.  This all takes place in a coffee shop with a blog that appears to have a direct connection to God–where everyone can ask one question each, and receive a direct answer from the Almighty.

Angel Wings

Wow–that covers a lot of ground!

Yes, it does, but the author is able to weave all these subjects together into a moving tale that will pull you in from the first page.  We meet Chelsea Chambers who is trying to rebuild her life as a single parent, while trying to re-start the dying business she inherited from her mother.  At the same time, she is trying to help her children adjust to their family not having their father living with them anymore, and, unlike her sister, does not believe God has all the answers.

Good to the last drop!Coffee Cup & Beans

This is the first work of fiction I have read by this author, and I really enjoyed it.  He pulled together a lot of issues taking place in our current society, gave them a light touch, and showed how God’s message is just as relevant for today, and its issues, as it has ever been.  This is a non-predictable 5-star book with a great ending.  I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys a good story.

“War in Heaven” by Derek Prince

Book Cover War in Heaven

Power in Prayer

This book is about the power we have in prayer, and in making proclamations.  The author wants us to understand there is an unseen war going on around us between the forces of Praying FigureGod and the forces of evil.  Some of the purposes of this warfare is to stop us from praying, or getting us to give up too soon.

As an example, Daniel was told by the angel Gabriel that his prayer had been heard as soon as he said it.  However, Gabriel was held up by the prince of Persia for twenty-one days until the angel Michael came to help him.  During that time, Daniel continued praying.   We are left Angel Prayingwith the thought that had Daniel given up, Gabriel would never have been able to come to him.  This story demonstrates the strength and influence that comes from prayers and intercession

Another useful, but little understood weapon, is making proclamations.  These carry power, and are a form of spiritual warfare.  The author states it is releasing the power of God’s word into a situation, and once done, should be followed by praise.  This is a potent weapon and  can be used either for good or bad.  It can be engaged for someone’s personal situation,  or something on a worldwide scale.

Cross & Silhouette of PersonIt all comes back to Jesus.

Our ability to succeed in this comes from the sacrifice Jesus made for all of us on the cross.  His blood gives us the gift of eternal life, as well as, giving us power in prayer, and making proclamations while we live here on earth.

My thoughts…

I think what the author had to say about praying, and the power of proclamations, was Jesus in Stained Glassvery interesting.  It is good information to put into practice, but was disappointed more space was not devoted to the subject, especially about proclamations.  Very few pages were given to it.  I think this is an issue people would like to know more about.

Mr. Prince recounted a couple of true-life angel stories that are fascinating, and the information he had about angels was thought-provoking.

I do not agree with his opinion about a pre-Adamic race, and felt way too much of the book was devoted to it.  I believe in a literal six-day creation, and his “proof” for his position wasn’t supported by anything he said.  In fact, it hurt my opinion of what he had to say on the other subjects.   All in all, I can only recommend the parts about praying and proclamations in this 3-star book.

The publisher has provided me with a complimentary copy of this book through Chosen Books and Bethany House Publishing for the purpose of review.  All opinions expressed are my own, and I was not required, or influenced, to give anything but an honest appraisal.  Despite my receiving the book free, it has not influenced my judgment.

Gluten-Free Texas Chili

Chili PotOur Favorite

We have been having lots of cold weather and snow here.  It is a great time to stay inside, and have something warm.  Texas Chili is one of our favorites, and though we enjoy it year ’round, it is especially good in the winter.  Even if you do not have to follow a gluten-free diet, give this a try.  There is only one gluten intolerant person in our home, but everyone LOVES this chili, gluten-free or not!

  • 2 pounds Picnic Pork or Pork Shoulder, trimmed and cut into 1/4-inch pieces
  • Olive oil for frying
  • 5 teaspoons chopped Garlic
  • 1 large Onion, finely chopped
  • 2 – 3 quarts gluten-free Chicken Broth
  • 2 1/2 cups Salsa, we like Pace
  • 2 Tablespoons Sweetener of choice (Sugar, Honey, Swerve to equal this amount)
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground Black Pepper
  • 2 or 3 whole Jalapeños, seeded and diced
  • 1 Tablespoon ground Cumin
  • fresh, chopped Cilantro Leaves, 2 to 3 handfuls
  • 1 Tablespoon ground Ancho Chili Pepper

Peper Circle

In a Dutch oven, brown the meat in the olive oil. Lower heat to simmer, and continue cooking another 45 minutes.  While that is cooking, chop garlic, onion and prepare the jalapeños.  Add those items to the cooking meat.  If the seeds are completely removed, the jalapeños will have little to no heat.

Add the chicken broth and Pace, and bring to a boil. Add the sweetener, cumin, fresh cilantro, black pepper, and Ancho chili pepper, stir well.  Reduce heat to low and simmer, covered, for 1 hour. Check occasionally to see that liquid covers the meat. If it begins to look dry, lower the heat and add a little more chicken broth or Pace.

If it comes out too spicy for your taste, add more chicken broth to get your level of heat.

Stir, cover, and simmer over very low heat for an additional hour.

We serve this with pinto beans on the side.

Bean with Sombrero - CopyPinto Beans

  • 2 lb package dried Pinto Beans
  • 1 package Bacon, chopped, 1 cup chopped Ham, or no meat at all
  • 1 chopped Onion
  • 2 teaspoons chopped Garlic
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground Cumin
  • Salt to taste

Rinse dried beans and put in a large Dutch oven, cover with water.  Bring to a boil and boil two minutes.  Turn off the heat, cover, and let sit for one hour.  Put a colander in your sink and pour beans into colander, draining off all the liquid.  Rinse the beans, and put back in large clean pot.  Cover beans with water, about an inch above the beans.  Stir in 1 chopped onion, 2 teaspoons chopped garlic, 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin and 1 pkg. chopped bacon or 1 cup chopped ham.  Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to medium and cook 1 1/2 to 2 hours until desired tenderness is reached for eating.  At the end of cooking time, taste the beans, and add salt to taste.

Enjoy!

DVD Giveaway Roadmap Genesis

Movie Roadmap Genesis

Ever have a life changing experience?

If you have had a child, dollars to donuts, you know the meaning of life changing events.  Becoming a parent can cause many to completely change the course of their life.  That is what happened to filmmaker Nolan Lebovitz.Man Wife & Baby

Mr. Lebovitz grew up in the Chicago area, where he was taught about Genesis as a child.  His family instilled values based on the Bible in his life.   Then he grew up, moved to Hollywood and veered away from those teachings.  He began making suspense thriller movies.

After he had a child and became a parent, his outlook about his entire life changed.  He looked at the films he made, and asked himself if doing those was making the world a better place for his children.  He also took a good look at the world in general, and saw that it was a much different environment than the one he had grown up in.   He found it to be a much meaner and less caring place to live.

In the past, the Judeo-Christian world view had been such a common part of everyday society that Shakespeare, Chaucer and Melville often included Biblical references in their works.  If those same references were made in today’s literature, many reader’s wouldn’t Movie Roadmap Genesis Do you know where you're headedhave a clue what they were referring to.

Recalling his own upbringing, the filmmaker decided what is missing from today’s world is the religious heritage and values he received as a child.  He also wanted to provide that type of foundation for his own children.  With that thought he read the book of Genesis, and discovered it offers answers to lots of questions  plaguing society today.

That knowledge spurred him to turn away from making the types of movies he has made in the past, and make this one, Roadmap Genesis, devoted to the first book of the Bible.

“Am I my brother’s keeper?” This question has echoed through the ages, and originates from the book of Genesis.  If we are, what are we doing about it?

Genesis states we are all descended from the same common parents, Adam and Eve.  If that is true, how can racial hatred or prejudice ever be justified?

Join the filmmaker on a journey of discovery – building the case that the Book of Genesis contains the guidance we need to help our society lift itself out of its current decline and return it to prosperity, promise, and accomplishment.Movie Roadmap Genesis It's a Roadmap for Faith

This movie will make you think, wonder what Genesis has to say, and want to read the book yourself.  Does it stand the test of time, and answer all those questions?  I, for one, am going to find out.

While I’m re-reading the book, I am happy to say I will also be giving away a DVD copy of this movie, Roadmap Genesis.

How about help deciding what your career path should be?Question Mark Oval

This fascinating volume can help you with those questions and more.  Mr. DeWitt has written a very readable book that can be used to learn about the subject of handwriting analysis.  The many things that can be gleaned from the way a letter is formed when written is unbelievable, including many different facets about the human psyche and personality.

The author explains how to easily examine your own handwriting, and the information that can be learned from that.  He incorporates the personality types from the Holland — RIASEC System.  This is a well-known and widely-accepted way to understand the different personality’s people possess, along with the areas they might do best in.  Mr. DeWitt describes them in a very easy to understand manner.Paper and Pencil

Take out some paper and write this down…

The author suggests writing a paragraph that uses every letter in the alphabet as a sample to study.  He points out that a person’s signature is not really representative of a person’s natural handwriting.  Over time, people have often embellished or added flourishes to a signature that is not seen in their everyday handwriting.  Although the author states that printing can also be used, more can be learned from cursive writing.

Besides being an amazing subject that can help you discover predispositions about yourself and others, this skill can be used in various careers.  Criminology, Marriage Counseling, Medicine and Human Resources are just a few of the areas that would greatly benefit from this knowledge.

Mr. DeWitt is quick to point out the interpretation of this information is only as good as the interpreter.  He states that this is not fortune telling.  It just indicates an area you might be good in, along with areas that you might not do as well in.  However, always go by what you feel is right for you, these results are suggestions only.

“The Duck Commander Faith and Family Bible” by Phil & Al Robertson

Happy, Happy, Happy

How about a new Bible?BiblesBibles - Copy - Copy

“You’ve already got one,” you say, “and aren’t they all alike anyway?”

Actually, no, not all Bibles are alike.  Today, there are many translations to choose from, and within them, a variety of types.  Reading more than one kind of Bible can make God’s Word even more enlightening, and add a Bibles - Copy - Copy - Copyricher dimension to scripture.  This one, in particular, has some things that no other edition contains–input from Phil and Al Robertson.  Interspersed throughout both the Old and New Testaments are 104 commentaries, 52 written by each man.

Many may be familiar with Phil and Al Robertson from the television show, Robertson Phil“Duck Dynasty.”  Al is Phil’s oldest child, the only son without a beard.  Fans of the program may not realize that Phil has a Bachelor’s Robertson, AlDegree in Physical Education and a Master’s Degree in Education.  Al is an ordained minister, and has been in Christian ministry for more than 25 years.  Phil gave up a life of drugs, alcohol and women when he had a life-changing experience with Jesus Christ in the 1970s.

Values to live by.

The Robertson family strives to live by five core values:  faith, family, fellowship, forgiveness and freedom.  Their thoughts and writings all reflect those standards, and they Sighthave divided their commentaries into those five subjects.  Phil and Al named their essays “Set Your Sights,” and there is a list of all of them in the front of the Bible which is called “52 Days”.  They suggest reading one from the list each week.  They even include a handy check box by each one so you can keep track of the ones read.

Besides including Phil or Al’s thoughts in each article, scriptures are referenced and specific page numbers are given to turn to for more on the subject.   Each essay closes with a section called “On the Hunt” which has different key points to look for in the Bible, or to think about further.hunter holding a shot gun

There are 30 “Life Changers,” 15 articles written by each man in the front of the Bible.  These contain true stories of lives that have been completely changed by the power of God.  There is also a great welcome letter from Phil and Al.

Have a good conversation, sit awhile!

Both men demonstrate they are excellent writers, and it is apparent they put a lot of work and thought into all the articles.  Their points of view are really eye opening and very interesting.  Their reflections add a lot to the Biblical text, similar to the experience of listening to a talented pastor preach an interesting sermon on a text from scripture.  Yet their writing is done in a very conversational tone, so it is not hard to understand.  In fact, one feels as if they were having a one on one talk with Phil or Al when reading their words.

The Bible itself is well-made and hard backed.   It is the complete New King James Version, and is part of the Signature Series from Thomas Nelson.  The font is a normal size, with good subject headings and the beginning of each book is clearly marked. References are given at the bottom of each page. There is a topical index in the back, and a free download with Bible study tools.  Phil and Al’s encouraging and entertaining commentaries add a lot to this 5-star Bible.  It will make you happy, happy, happy–and I highly recommend it.Happy Duck Sign
