Steadfast Heart by Tracie Peterson

Book Cover Steadfast Heart

Going to the Chapel

This tale takes place in 1888 Seattle, Washington, and revolves around a bridal school Briderun by three elderly women.  The story centers on young, wealthy Lenore; her best friend, Abrianna, who was raised in the bridal school; Kolbein, a lawyer from Chicago looking for his run away sister; along with Wade, a handyman and childhood friend of Abrianna.

Lenore is desperate to procure a husband.  Her father has given her a short time period to find love on her own. If she doesn’t, he will marry her off to a man twice her age.  Abrianna constantly runs against the convention of the day, as well as, her three aunts, by ministering alone to the poor and destitute in the most dangerous parts of town.  Kolbein’s path cross these two women’s when he arrives in Seattle attempting to track down his missing sister. Man Tracking Wade spends a good deal of time trying to protect Abrianna, and helping her aunts.

There is a lot going on in this tale.  The Christian perspective in the book is strong and very well done.  I liked the story-line about a bridal school that is partially a finishing school, and partially a match making service.  The aunts who run it are interesting characters whose foibles add humor to the tale.

The story’s main character seems to start out as Lenore, but then switches to Abrianna, who is a lot more interesting.  But switching from one character to another is confusing for the reader.  There were also lots of side stories including a very shady man, drug dealing, human trafficking and some unsolved murders.Whodunit

The author writes very well.  But I did not like the story’s abrupt ending.  There were too many story lines that were started that did not have conclusions.  So instead of being a tale that can stand on its own, it feels very much like part of a series that needs the rest of the books to get a satisfactory ending.  I would still recommend this work because of the author’s writing skill.  There are enjoyable parts, and some of the loose ends are tied up in this volume.  Just be aware you will finish it wanting the next book in the series.

The publisher has provided me with a complimentary copy of this book through Bethany House Publishing for the purpose of review. All opinions expressed are my own, and I have not been compensated in any other manner. Despite my receiving the book free, it has not influenced my judgment, and I have given an honest opinion.

The Forgotten Knight by Emilie DeRitter

Book Cover The Forgotten Knight

The Stuff That Dreams Are Made Of….

This is a tale of castles, a chivalrous knight who puts God first, princesses in peril, flying fire-breathing Dragon Fire Breathingdragons, talking animals, wizards and sorceresses.  There is also witty dialog, humor, true friendship, danger and a forced quest.

What do you get when you mix all that together?

Castle Tall PinkA really great story that will keep your interest.  Sir Christopher of Calidore’s good deeds, and the knight himself, are legends throughout Christendom.  Many don’t believe he exists.  That is until they find themselves in great peril and Sir Christopher along with his protector, Aurora, swoop in to rescue them.

The two are compelled to spend all of their days doing good deeds–unless the curse that was put on them is lifted.  Sir Christopher has no idea what is needed to make that happen.  Instead of dwelling on it, he trusts God to guide him through it.  In the mean time, he continues his adventures with ogres, damsels in distress, and other harrowing escapades.

Wow, I didn’t see that one coming!

This tale was not predictable, especially the ending, and the entire book is family friendly. The characters were very believable Knight in Armourand their conversations with each other were great.  This book has broad appeal, and although written for teenagers, I think adults would like it as well.  I enjoyed this five-star book and highly recommend this to anyone who wants to be transported by a well-written story to the land of maidens fair and knights of olde.

I’d like to thank the author for providing me with a complimentary copy of this book for the purpose of review. All opinions expressed are my own, and I was not required, or influenced, to give anything but an honest appraisal.

The Littlest Christmas Kitten by Leona Novy Jackson

Book Cover The Littlest Christmas Kitten

Do You See What I See?

In this book, a mother cat has lost her baby kitten and is frantically searching high and low in a stable for it.  Just as she finds it in the animal’s feeding tough–the manger–the stable door swings open, and in come a man and a woman.  The mother cat wastes no time grabbing her baby and getting it out of the way. She then retreats with the kitten to a hiding place, where they, along with the rest of the stable animals, observe the first Christmas, the birth of Christ. The Littlest Christmas Kitten Extra PictureThis search for a  lost and then found kitten is a sweet tale that neatly intertwines the Christmas story along with it.  The children I have been involved with have all loved a story-line that involves wondering where something is, the search for that something and then the The Littlest Christmas Kitten Cat Ovaljoy finding of it.  This tale also includes the legend that every Christmas, cats pass down to each other their account of witnessing Jesus’ birth in the stable.

This darling hardback book is over-sized, contains pictures on each page and is geared toward small children.  A Christmas symbol list is included Candy Caneon the last three pages with short explanations of their origin.  This book provides many opportunities for lots of interaction to take place.  For instance, it would be fun to talk with the child about the way Christmas is celebrated in their home, what the Bible says about the birth of Jesus, as well as, input from the child about the story.  This 5-star book can be read at Christmas-time, and throughout the year.  It will provide a nice experience for both the reader and the child listening to it.

I’d like to thank the author and Book Crash for providing me with a complimentary copy of this book for the purpose of review. All opinions expressed are my own, and I was not required, or influenced, to give anything but an honest appraisal.

Movie Giveaway Susie’s Hope

Susie's Hope Movie Poster

Attention All Animal Lovers

Susie's Hope Movie QuoteWhat do you get with a woman recovering from life-threatening injuries from a dog attack, along with a different dog who has been severely beaten, set on fire and left for dead?  A heart wrenching tale about the life altering course that takes place when those two lives intersect.

Their narrative became this movie which is based on the true story of Donna Lawrence who nearly lost her leg, and did lose the baby she was carrying after a brutal pit-bull attack.  During her recovery, a friend and Donna visited a park where they thought they found the body of a brutalized dog.  In fact, though, the poor dog, Susie, was alive, but just barely.

Susie's Hope Hero DogDonna takes on her husband, the justice system and the man who was responsible for the beating, all in an attempt to help Susie.  She also has to face her own demons about the attack she endured and the loss of her baby.  But will Donna really be the hope that Susie needs?

It is easy to get caught up in this story, and relate to the characters.  This is a real David versus Goliath story–an underdog taking on the system.  For the most part, this is a family friendly movie.  However, there are some very graphic scenes showing Susie’s injuries, and detailed verbal descriptions of what the dog suffered.  There are some especially sweet scenes of Donna, her husband and dogs at Christmas time.  The movie has some great performers, including Susie herself, along with Jon Provost who played Timmy in the original television series Lassie.  Susie's Hope Christmas

Movie Review: The Gospel of John

Gospel of John Jesus at Night Alone

Fabulous, Wonderful

The other night I had the pleasure of watching an advance release of the movie, the Gospel of John, which became available on Netflix starting December 1, 2014.  This movie  has three different options to choose from:  King James, New International Version (NIV) or Spanish.  I watched the NIV version.  The Lumo Project produced this movie, and they plan on producing the other three gospels as well.

This movie really blew me away.

Gospel of John Jesus in CrowdThe complete book of John, from the Bible, is depicted in this film.  Please do not assume this is a dull, boring flick.  Just the opposite.  When watching this film, I was pulled into the story right from the beginning.  Even though this entire work is narrated, it is so well done that one forgets the actors are not speaking.  This production is mesmerizing and exciting.  The highly skilled performers give such an impressive presentation, even without speaking a single word of dialog, that this is truly a powerful experience, and should not be missed.

Get it.  See it.  Don’t miss it.

Gospel of John Sadducees - Copy - Copy

Although this is a portrayal of the entire book of the Bible, it amazingly seemed to last no longer than a few minutes.  The movie follows the Biblical text pretty much word for word. The combination of the narrator’s words, along with the visual presentation, makes the text come alive in a really impressive way, much more so than when it is read.   In a world heavily influenced by media, this film fits right in, and is very relational for today’s society and young people.

Gospel of John Jesus at NightI highly recommend anyone who has Netflix should take advantage of their opportunity to view this.  Never fear if you don’t see if on Netflix, use the search button, and it can be found that way.  Then get ready to change how you view the Bible.

Many thanks to Flyby Promotions for giving me the opportunity to have this preview.

Biblical Healing and Deliverance by Chester & Betsy Kylstra

Book Cover Biblical Healing and Deliverance

Want to Feel Better?

This is a book about healing, and achieving that healing by including faith.

The authors, Chester and Betsy Kylstra, are married Christians, and they believe faith plays an integral role in the healing process.  The two believe the spiritual level must be involved for complete healing to take place.  They suggest the following are the four keys that must be addressed, and integrated with each other:

  • Release From ancestral sins and curses.Key held by Person Purple
  • Replacement of destructive beliefs with Godly ones.
  • Healing from emotional and spiritual pain.
  • Deliverance from demonic oppression.

In this book, the authors explain how to put each of these points into practice.  There are many thought provoking, true stories given to illustrate using those keys, along with the favorable outcome and healing many have had.  Of special note, is the interesting on-going story of Sandy that is woven throughout the book.

The authors write in a very straight forward way, and seem very sincere about their method working.  The subject matter of healing, whether it be physical, mental or emotional, is going to be of interest to us all.  However, their approach to that healing may be different than most have followed.  It certainly gave me lots to mull over.  I found their 5-star book fascinating, and recommend it to anyone who has an interest in incorporating faith as a vital part of the healing process.   Star Smiling

Chester and Betsy Kylstra gave up successful careers to devote themselves to helping hurting people achieve healing and receive God’s love.  Restoring the Foundations, an organization they founded, is dedicated to giving people all that and more.  As their website says:   “…a person can live forty days without food, four days without water, four minutes without air, but only four seconds without hope.”

“Trivia for Adults” by The Reverend Joe B. Hewitt

Book Cover Triva for Adults

Game Night!

Looking for something to do?

Happy PencilYou’ve found it.  This book contains instructions for playing a game of trivia with a group of adults. Other than this book and the players, the only things needed to play are paper, something to write with, and a small prize for the winners.  The author includes questions that he developed himself, they have not come from some other source.  There are a total of 620 questions.  Since only 20 are needed per game, the book contains enough to play 31 different times.

The author recommends this be played by teams as opposed to individuals.  That way people can work together as a group when answering the questions.  Since some of the questions are challenging, playing with others is a good idea, plus it is more fun.Happy Sun Face

Trivia is defined by the Yahoo dictionary as:   “miscellaneous facts, especially when the subject of questions in games and quizzes.”  Those are definitely the type of questions that will be found here.  Lots of little known and entertaining facts pepper the pages of this book.

For instance, with this volume I was truly thrilled to get the answer to why Yankee Doodle Dandy stuck a feather in his hat and called it something else (you can find out just what that was in this book).  I had always wondered why he did that, now I know.

Get ready for some fun!

Happy People ShadowsThe title has been misunderstood by some to think the book’s contents might be inappropriate.  That is not the case, adult refers to the skill level of the questions.  Get this book and enjoy many hours of pleasure with old friends, or get to know some new ones while playing Trivia for Adults.

As the Biblical Psalmist of old said, “how wonderful it is, how pleasant, for God’s people to live (and may I add play) together in harmony!”*  Anyone who enjoys interacting with others or playing games will enjoy this delightful 5-star book.

I’d like to thank the author for providing me with a complimentary copy of this book for the purpose of review. All opinions expressed are my own, and I was not required, or influenced, to give anything but an honest appraisal.

The author has lived a diverse life.  He grew up as a Jehovah’s Witnesses.  As a teenager, he left them, and as a young man, he became a Christian.  He worked many years as an investigative reporter while owning a printing business and publishing weekly newspapers.  He felt called by God to become a pastor, so attended seminary, and has started more than one church.

Additionally, he has served as a missionary in many foreign countries, done various types of work to promote Christianity, and authored numerous magazine articles and books.  He is an artist, a photographer and a court-appointed mediator striving to settle lawsuits.  Reverend Hewitt is a member of Mensa, the high IQ society.

“The Christmas Cats Encounter Bats” by Constance Corcoran Wilson

Book Cover The Christmas Cats Encounter Bats

What Was That Noise?  Did You Hear That?

Christmas Lights - Copy (2)

In this book, The Christmas Cats are called in to investigate because there are strange sounds coming from a school bus at the local mall.  The cats come to the rescue and save the day by discovering that bats are the source of the noise.  The book states that bats can be scary and different, but bats are also useful.

A rhyming style, reminiscent of Dr. Seuss, is used to tell this story.  The volume is over-sized and paper bound; it contains twenty-four pages.  Every page has brightly colored illustrations, with a cheery string of Christmas lights bordering all the pages as well.  It is a delight to look at.  In the back of the book, a child will have the pleasant surprise of discovering a coloring page and a puzzle.Bats Flying from Christmas Cats

The author asks that the page be colored, and then sent to her book website to be posted for all to see!  This same site, under “freebies,” contains additional coloring pages from the series that can be downloaded and printed out.  She also states that sometimes there are prizes for scanned pictures and puzzles.

This is the third book in a series, and it can be read without reading the rest of the tales.  However, like Aesop’s Fables of old, each Christmas Cat book has a moral to the story.  So by getting the other books, the character trait in each story can be built on the others.  The lesson in this story is that all God’s creatures have a purpose, and should be respected and loved.

Book Cover The Christmas Cats in Silly Hats

Playing together nicely, and learning to get along, is the point of the story in book one, The Christmas Cats In Silly Hats.  This tale features twins, and was done in honor of the author’s own twin granddaughters.

Book Cover The Christmas Cats Chase Christmas Rats

Accepting others individually, without pre-judgment or prejudice is the character trait in book two, The Christmas Cats Chase Christmas Rats.

I think the rhyming story along with the bright illustrations, would appeal to all children.  The book suggests the starting age for the story is three years old.  I think a child a bit younger could enjoy this book, but it would depend on each individual.  This 5-star book would be fun to read to the children in your life, as well as, a joy for the child to look at on their own.

“Becoming Bea” by Leslie Gould

Book Cover Becoming Bea

He Loves Me….He Loves Me Not…..

Bea is a 21 year old, quiet Amish girl living in Lancaster, Pennsylvania.  Her father has passed away, and her mother has recently survived a brain tumor.  Molly, her older sister, has tried to run Bea’s life as far back as she can remember.  Now married, Molly wants to force homebody Bea to accompany her on an extended visit to Montana to visit Molly’s in-laws.  Frantically wanting to avoid the trip, Bea gets a job helping the nearby Miller family with general housework and their recently born, premature triplets.

Although Bea has no experience with babies, she is motivated to learn quickly.  She wants to have a job, so she won’t be pressed to go with Molly on her trip.  Bea soon finds she Apple Tree & Apples on Ground - Copyadores children.  Despite getting little sleep, and working really hard at the Miller’s, her job is a labor of love.  She even squeezes in time to help harvest the apples that are in the Miller’s yard and trees.   She uses much of the fruit in her many apple recipes while cooking for the family.

The one drawback to the job is Ben Rupp.  He is also working at the Miller’s.  Bea and Ben Spelling Beewere strong competitors with each other every single year in school.  They always tried to outdo the other in spelling.  Their fierce rivalry in the 8th grade spelling bee was so over-the-top, the school board forbid future spelling bees–because of their very non-Amish behavior.  Although Ben frustrated Bea in school, she really thrived on their mutual spelling battles.

Ben and Bea have a further history because he courted her a couple of years earlier. Suddenly he just stopped courting without any explanation.  Bea has felt hurt, rejected and angry ever since.  Whenever he is near her, she feels he is verbally attacking her, and she responds in kind.

Apple - CopySince the two of them are working at the Miller’s, Ben acts like he wants to court Bea again.  This confuses Bea and she doesn’t want to open her heart for more hurt.  She fears he might jilt her suddenly like he did before–especially since the first rejection has never been explained.  She doesn’t trust him, and wants to understand what happened.

When Molly returns from her trip, Bea discovers Molly has set in motion plans  that will Heart Brokencompletely change the course of Bea’s life.  Bea is horrified by Molly’s interference, but she is also traumatized by events that have taken place in her family’s absence.  Bea has found herself unjustly accused of something she did not do, and sadly finds very few will believe her.  Ben is one of her worst non-believers, and has broken her heart once again.

Will Bea get a say in the course her life will follow, or will she meekly give in to Molly’s life-plan?  Now that she has discovered the joy of children, is Bea destined never to have any of her own?  And will Bea get justice and have her name cleared of the false accusations?

This was an enjoyable look at Amish life and romance.  The frantic pace that three newborn preemies cause in the Miller household rang very true.  The story also covered some unexpected ground I have never read in other Amish books.  This book is part of a series, but Becoming Bea can stand alone.  Anyone who enjoys well-written Amish books, or Christian fiction, would enjoy this 5-star book.

As a special treat, the author, Leslie Gould, has allowed me to share one of Bea’s yummy apple recipes:

Apple RealBea’s Baked Apples
Apple Real

Ingredients

  • 1 teaspoon butter
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 3 teaspoons sugar
  • 3 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 6 large apples – peeled, cored, and sliced
  • 3 1/2 tablespoons water
  • Chopped pecans, if desired, about 1/4 cup, or to taste
  • Raisins, if desired, about 1/4 cup, or to taste

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Grease a large baking dish with the butter.
  2. Mix brown sugar, white sugar, and cinnamon in a small bowl. Layer about 1/3 of the apples in prepared baking dish; sprinkle with 1/3 of the sugar mixture.  If using nuts and raisins, sprinkle 1/3 over apples.   Repeat layers.  If desired, put pats of butter on top.
  3. Bake in preheated oven for 30 minutes. Pour water over apples and continue baking until tender, about 15 minutes more.  This turns the sugar/cinnamon mixture into a perfect sauce.
  4. Check the last 5 to 10 minutes to make sure they are not getting too soft or mushy.
